(Left) Mike Mason won the "umpoft on both nights. (RIght) Ru~ Holland won his first main event of the year in Saturday's 250CC main. (Below) Travis Hodges was hot and cold in Oklahoma, finishing sixth and 13th In Friday's 125 and 250cc mains, respectively, but came back to finish second in Saturday's 250cc main. Gibson held on to his lead to take his third win of the series. "I just kept wondering when the twolap card was coming out," Gibson said. SATURDAY Willoh stayed hot for Saturday's race. He, once again, demonstrated his knack for holeshots, as he claimed the early lead in the 125cc Pro main. Antunez and Gibson, however, latched on to WiJloh's rear fender going into the Dragon Backs, where Gibson nearly bought the farm. "I went to the right side of the whoops and it kicked me a little bit up over the bars," Gibson said of his near get-off. "I saved it but made a dead stop." This gave Antunez a free ticket to second place, with Kevin Crine slipping into third. But that wouldn't last long. Holland charged by Crine on the second lap, while Antunez continued to stalk Willoh. Second place didn't last long for Holland either, as the Honda rider over-jumped the Dunlop Catapult and went down, leaving the door wide open for Hofmaster to come blazing through. Shortly thereafter, Antunez made his move on WHloh for the lead, then quickly started getting down to the business of putting as much distance between him and Wilioh as possible. "I waited until Wilioh started to make mistakes," Antunez said of passing WilIoh, "then I put my head down and charged." Antunez went on to record his 15th win of the series, while Willoh held on for second and Hofrnaster third. It was all red at the start of the 250cc main. Honda riders Hodges, Holland and Wilioh all charged to the front and, for the first five laps, it .was a Honda freight train. Willoh was trying all he could do to get around Holland, while Holland was doing the same to Hodges. It wasn't until the beginning of lap six when Holland was able to blast by Hodges down the start straight and into the Dragon Backs. Antunez, meanwhile, suffered his worst start of the weekend and was frantically coming up through the pack. "I tried to make some good clean passes and not make any mistakes," he said. Up front, Gibson was setting a trap for Wilioh and, on the seventh lap, he cut to the inside of Willoh going into the Dragon Backs and came out in third. Antunez made his way through the pack and caught up to the now-fourthplaced Wilioh. On the last lap, Antunez zapped Willoh but came up one spot short of the podium. "I was able to get around Wilioh at the end and gave it everything I had," Antunez said, "but it wasn't enough [to make the podium]." Holland was all grins after scoring his first Arenacross win. "This [win] took a million pounds off of my shoulders," Holland said. "I've been waiting for this and have been trying really hard - perhaps too hard. I definitely know I can do it now." Hodges was practically speechless with his second-place ride. "I was trying to relax and not think too much about the guys behind me," Hodges said. "I wanted to get out there and prove it to myself that I could do it." Gibson rounded out the podium in third. eN lazy EArena liutllrie, Oklahoma Resuhs:January12-13,2001 Friday 125: 1.
