wElmdJ Billy Laninovich (Yam) and Doug Dubach (Yam) were the big winners in the opening round of the GFI Winter Series at Perris Raceway in Perris. California. on January 7. Laninovich won the 125cc Pro class with Dubach doing likewise in the 250cc Pro class. Just before we went to press. Honda motorsports manager Chuck Miller called us with the latest on Sebastien TortelIi's practice-crash injury at the season-opening AMAlEA Sports Supercross at Edison International Field in Anaheim. California. on January 6. After crashing in the whoops and landing on his left shoulder. Tortelli was experiencing pain and limited mobility. but he said that he thought he could ride. Under the advice of Dr. Spencer. however. Tortelli immediately caught a flight to Phoenix. Arizona. to have the shoulder checked out. An """ MRI was performed on Monday moming. January 6. revealing that there was indeed some damage to the muscle. though the extent of the damage was not known precisely. according to Miller. Tortelli was scheduled to fly back to San Diego later that day to have a second doctor analyze the results of the MRI. Miller said it was v~ry likely that Tortelli would have the shoulder checked out "'\ with an arthroscope. which can more accurately ascertain the extent of the damage. If extensive damage were detected. it would probably be repaired at the same time that the arthroscopic examination was being performed. "We honestly don't know at this point." said Miller in regards to how long Tortelli would be out. "It could be as little as two weeks. or in a worst-case scenario. as many as four to six weeks. We'lI know a lot more later today and in the next couple of days." Buddy Antunez (Suz) swept all four main events at the Fort Worth Arenacross in Fort Worth, Texas, January 56. Those who joined Antunez on the podium ov.er the weekend were Jeff Willoh (Hon), Denny Stephenson (Kaw). Tommy Hofmaster (Yam) and Pedro Gonzalez (Kaw). On Saturday, Stephenson crashed during the 125cc main and suffered a broken rib and a concussion. r Shane Watts (KTM) won the opening round of the inaugural Parts Unlimited World Off-Road Championship Series a4: Glen Helen Raceway. in San Bernardino, California, on January 7. Mike Kiedrowski (Suz) and Rodney Smith (Suz) finished second and third, while Ty Davis (Yam) and Destry Abbott (Kaw) rounded out the top five overall. Watts collected $5000 for the win. Arai Helmet Americas, Ltd. has announced the release of a very special limited edition Joey Dunlop Replica helmet. The offer is all the more special because Arai Americas will donate" every penny" of its profits to the Joey Dunlop Fund for his family and his charities. The offer is part of a joint effort between Arai Americas, based in Daytona. Florida. and Arai Europe. "We want to commemorate Joey's memory, his racing achievements, and, to a greater extent, his exceptional and selfless humanitarian activities," said Roger Weston. president of Arai's North and Latin American operation. "This is why we're donating every penny of our profits from each sale." To maximize the amount of the donation from each helmet. Weston said that Arai is even bypassing its normal American distribution channels by allowing purchasers to order directly from the Arai website. "This way, the maximum amount of money will go to the family and charities. Admittedly, it's a bit more work for us here. but it brings the best result." Weston added that Arai retailers will be involved because buyers will have to go to a dealer to get sized and fit correctly and to place their advance order. All helmets will be made to order in a single production run and will then be shipped directly to the customer. Frenchman Richard Sainct (KTM) continued to lead the Paris-Dakar Rally. which at that point was a little over onethird complete. The Frenchman led Spaniard Joan Roma (KTM) by five minutes and 11 seconds in the overall standings. with Italian Fabrizio Meoni (KTM) third another coupl~ of minutes back. American Jimmy Lewis (BMW) was seventh overall. an hour and eight minutes behind the leader. with American Johnny Campbell (Hon) 12th. two hours and 44 minutes behind Sainct. Dougie Lampkin (Mon) made the perfect start to the defense of his World Indoor title when he took a convincing win at the opening round of this year's series held at Sheffield Arena in England on January 6. Lampkin topped Marc Freixa (She) and Marc Colomer (GG) in taking the win. The next round of the series is scheduled for January 11 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. According to reports in England's Motor Cycle News, one of next year's World Superbike events in Europe may be held at Silverstone and not Donington Park. The change has come about after an agreement between the company that owns WSB and Brands Hatch - Octagon to nun the Formula One car GP at Silverstone, which is also desperate to expand its bike racing activity, according to MCN reports, Successful rounds of the British Superbike Series have been held at Silverstone for the last three years and the track's owners have made no secret of their desire to host World Championship events. The Fl deal - given final approval two weeks ago - will run for 15 years with WSB owners Octagon taking control of all events at Silverstone. That means that Octagon will move the Donington Park round of World Superbike to a track they have some control over, rather than give the event - and the cash flow that goes with it - to another organizatio~: Hotel rooms in Daytona Beach, Florida. may already be hard to find for Bike Week (March 2-11). but Travelcraft currently has rooms available both on the beach and out by Daytona International Speedway. The California Governor's Committee for Employment of Disabled Persons recently presented a 2000 Employer of the Year award to Barnett Tool and Engineering for their outstanding contributions to the community by prOViding employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Nearly 200 motorcycles of virtually every make, era and class will converge on the San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park from February 3-25 as a part of the Motorcycles in the Park exhibit.
