Cobra-mounted Glenn Prestholt hammered the competition in the Pee Wee (7-9) class, handily topping both contests. Husky rider David Paschke trailed Prestholt in both motos, but he couldn't narrow the gap on the Cobra pilot and was thus doomed for the number-two slot, ahead of Mark Palmer (3-3), Caleb Hansen (4-4) and Jennifer Adovnik (5-8). In the adjoined Pee Wee (0-6) class, Andy DiBrino and Justin Spink split moto wins, with the outcome going in Spink's favor for the overall. Former AMA National riders Mike and Terry Hamness each garnered a victory in the two 250cc Pro motos, but it was the younger of the two brothers, Mike, who shot out in front of the field in moto two and was never challenged. The Yamaha rider put substantial ground on his brother Terry, the former National number-93 plate holder, to net the overall win. Eric Rogers earned the overall win in the combined Intermediate class, although he failed to win either moto. Connaghan and Morgan scored moto victories, but both failed to do well in their other outings; Morgan (5-1) finished second overall, ahead of Crandall (3-3), Connaghan (1-5) and Joe Brockway (4-4). Wood was again a double-class winner on Saturday night, posting wins in the 60cc Junior (6-8) and 60cc Open classes. Wood had tough competition in the 60cc Open class, as Steinke and another KTM rider, Rhett Johnson, pushed Wood to the finish and finished second and third overall, ahead of Travis and Tyler McClinton. eN 30. "I would like to thank Dale Kieffer for all the help he has given me, as well as Michelin, Racer's Edge, Vortex, Pro Dyno, and ask CCS to have a few more races in Vegas. " James Romero, 28, from Tempe, Arizona, claimed the number-two plate for the season aboard his 1998 Suzuki GSXR750. "Riding an older bike made it tough to compete this year," reported Romero. "The guys in this club ride really hard. Thanks to everyone from CCS and to Babe's Cabaret, Arai, Apache Honda Yamaha Suzuki, Racer's Edge, Lockhart-Phillips, EBC, Suzuki, M4, Silkolene, Factory, Sharkskinz, Rick Gorman, Dunlop, Davis and Associates, O'Keefe GRP, GP Paint and Body, ErverPefect.com, and JR3." Third overall went to last year's number-one plate holder, John Jewett. The 31-year-old Mesa man used the opportunity to announce his retirement from racing. "I didn't win any class championships this year because I didn't do the races at Buttonwillow," Jewett said, "but I had a good time, and I want to thank all my friends who helped me, including Arai, M4, Ray Hymer, and Cobb's Restaurant." There were several no-shows at the double-points season finale, the most noteworthy being Mark Ledesma, who raced a few times with CCS this season but is currently seeking sponsorship for a run at the Formula USA title next year, and Mike Noschese, who has been very successful with his R6, but an unconfirmed rumor has it that Noschese is hanging up his leathers. In the past, the last race of the season could turn a bit ludicrous when racers borrowed anything with two wheels just to be entered in as many classes as possible. This wasn't the case this year. In fact, the racing all weekend was excellent, and in some cases was spiced up by the appearance of some very fast competitors from out of town. Garland, Texas' Laroy Montgomery got things off to a good start with a near wire-to-wire win in the GT Lights class on Saturday. Montgomery was superb all weekend despite being sidelined by a crash for four months. Montgomery won every race he entered, including the Formula 40, Lightweight GP, Lightweight Supersport, Lightweight Superbike and Heavyweight Sportsman contests. "I wish I knew the air density today, because my bike is jetted perfectly," beamed Montgomery. Rory Palmer made no secret that he wanted the track record. "Class championships are nice and all that," he said, "but if you get a track record ... that's pretty special." After fending off a challenge from James Romero during the entire 10lap Heavyweight Superb ike race, Palmer was able to claim the win by less than half a second, but he didn't get near a track record. Later, he met with Romero during the Heavyweight Supersport race, in which both leaders were nearly taken out by lapped traffic. This one went down to the wire once again, but Palmer won by 1.2 seconds at the
