CMC Northwest Winter Arenacross Series Round 3: Forster Livestock Pavilion Steinke, Wood Clash BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, DEC. 8·9 iminutive KTM speedsters Gared Steinke and Jared Wood went at it once again in the 60cc Open and age-group classes on two consecutive evenings at the latest round of the CMC Northwest Winter Arenacross Series, held inside of the Forster Livestock Pavilion at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. The dynamic duo's first meeting of the weekend came in the combined 60cc age-group contest on Friday. Wood and Steinke stayed in close quarters throughout the moto, which went in Steinke's favor, followed by Wood, Travis McClinton and Tyler McClinton. Moto two was nearly a repeat until Steinke crashed, aiding Wood in taking the moto victory. Steinke came from well back to trail Wood, the Junior (6-8) class winner, and Travis McClinton, who was the overall winner of the Senior (9-11) class via 2-1 placings, ahead of Wood (1-3) and his Travis' twin brother Tyler. Wood finalized his Friday night double-class decimation with his wins in the 60cc Open class. Wood topped both motos, while Travis McClinton polished off his best night of racing of the year with second overall, although McClinton was aided in taking the runner-up laurels by Steinke's moto-two misfortune. Steinke (2-3) again fell and finished third and third overall. A large field of riders assembled on Saturday night for the combined Before The Hill Junior and Intermediate contest, which was topped by Yamaha-mounted Ben Morgan, making a rare appearance. In moto one, Morgan finished second to Honda rider Joey Mancuso. Then Morgan fended off Mancuso in a moto-Iong battle to snare the overall win in the Intermediate portion. Mancuso (1-2), Devin Connaghan (3-3), Tye Crandall (6-4) and Matt Williams (5-5) filled out the top five overall. In the combined Junior portion, Brody Baxter and Cory Johnson split moto victories, but it was Baxter who won moto one and backed up that performance with a second-place finish in moto two behind the Hondamounted Johnson to snag the overall win.
