2000 Dave Coupe Winter MX Special (Left! By JIM AND VALERIE ENOS PHOTOS BY JIM ENOS MARYSVILlE, CA, DEC. 2-3 urbo Reif, aboard an Amiguous Industries/FMF/Spy /Sidi/Thorbacked Honda, ran full boost to claim the overall victory in the 250cc Pro class at the fifth annual Dave Coupe Winter Motocross Special. Carving his lines on the sandy E Street Bridge track, Reif won by way of a 2-1 score thanks to a lot of hard work and a little luck. After crashing early in moto one, Reif made an incredible charge and stuck a gusty inside move on Evan Laughridge on the last turn before the checkers for second. In moto two, Reif was all over leader and first-moto winner Jeff Northrop, but at about the halfway point, Northrop pulled to the side with a mechanical problem, and Reif motored on for the win. "I got good starts all day on my 250," Reif said. "With as rough as this track got, I just tried to wear 'em out. Me and Jeff had a good race going in that last moto and it's too bad he broke. I'm coming back from an ankle injury I suffered at the Honda test track a little while back, and it feels good to win one." "I came down that long straight section and it just slowed down." said Northrop. "It might be the crank that let go; I'm not sure yet. Turbo was running good in that moto, and I think it would have been a good race down to the wire." Dave Coupe who contested the Supercross and Nationals aboard a factory-backed Maico in the early 1980s, once again returned to the normally whooped-out track and, utilizing the services of the AMP crew, turned it into a masterpiece that drew more than 400 riders. New this year was the change to a two-day format, with the Beginners and Novices run- T 46 JANUARY 10, 2001 • cue ning on Saturday and the Intermediates and Pros running on Sunday. While things didn't go as planned on the 250 for the Team Green/Foxbacked Northrop, he retaliated in the 125cc Pro class, going I-Ion the day for the victory. In moto one, after a holeshot by Scott Davis, Northrop overcame a midpack start and meticulously made his way through the 12rider field and briefly battled with Laughridge before going on to take the checkers. In moto two, Northrop came around the first lap in second, following another Davis holeshot, but this time Northrop wasted no time in getting out front, and he once again held off Laughridge for the win. "In the first moto, I got cut off at the start and came into the first turn pretty far back," said Northrop. "Laughridge was riding good, but as the track got rougher, it was more to my liking, and I felt pretty comfortable out there in moto two." Yamaha of Modesto-backed Chris Loredo dominated the 250cc Intermediate class with a pair of moto wins. Benefiting from a holeshot in moto one, Loredo quickly gapped the 16rider field and rode unchallenged to the checkers. In moto two, Michael Gorda Jr. snagged the holeshot and managed to keep Loredo at bay for a while. However, Loredo had other plans, and he dived inside on a big, sandy sweeper to take over for the • e n e _ s eventual win. Gorda held off the challenge of Vince Blair and checked in with a 5-2 tally, good enough for second on the day. Eric Nye took care of business in the 125cc Intermediate ranks. Nye set a blistering pace en route to double moto wins over Jason Sturdevan, who finished out the day with a 5-2 score for second overall. In Supermini action, Charlie Morrison was in a league of his own. Fresh off a fourth-place showing at the Mini 'O's, the Honda-mounted Morrison simply put on a clinic in both motos, taking wire-to-wire victories for the overall. Suzuki pilot A.J. Perez locked in second overall with a pair of runner-up finishes, while Brad Kelly rounded out the top three via a 3-3 shOWing. On Sunday, Marysville resident Kale Deibler rode to consecutive moto wins in the 80cc Novice class, besting Kawasaki pilot Matthew Spencer, who posted a 3-2 tally for second overall. Beau Wiegand traded runner-up finishes with Spencer for third on the day. The huge 80cc Beginner class was won by Matt Lozada. Challenging a nearly full gate of 21 riders, Lozada checked in with a solid 2-1 score over Casey Maim, who posted a 5-3 score on the day for second. (Above) Chartie Morrison ruled the E Street Bridge track in the Supermini class, leading from wire to wire in both motos. Scotty Craven topped the 60cc Beginner class with a pair of wins, while Jarred Holt followed up in second via a 2-3 showing. While the sand track proved to be quite a challenge for the PeeWees, Austin Howell came out on top in the Open (0-8) class.
