Mahon and Riess were all over each other in a great battle over second place, swapping the position back and forth. Gomez checked out with a lead of 25 seconds after six laps on the now very whooped-out track. Riess won the battle for runnerup, beating Mahon to the checkers, but Mahon won the war by topping Riess by a single point for the second-place trophy. Burson (3-4) and Andrew Trimble (6-5) rounded out the top five. Jeff Eide and his pair of Mid Cities/Answer/Silkolene/Tsubaki/N-Style/Up Front Designsbacked Hondas were unbeatable in both the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes. Caleb Gosselaar kept Eide honest during the second 125cc race en route to second overall, ahead of Josh Bagge. Justin Eide went 2-2 in the 250cc class, ahead of Bagge and Jeremy Ferro. Chris Neitzel took home the first-place money in the 250cc Pro class with a perfect 1-1 score aboard his Moose/HRP/Dirt Rider-sponsored Honda. YZ426F-mounted Jason Wood went 2-2 for the second-place money, over Chris Thompson and Joshua Kann. Chris Tocco snatched the holeshot in both 125cc Pro motos, but it was Chris Gosselaar who was out front both times when the checkers fell to claim the overall. Tocco went 3-2 to top Chris' younger brother Todd Gosselaar for second-place payback. RM 125-mounted Nikki Puentes was untouchable in the Women's class. Becki Kenngott was twice the bridesmaid, followed by Shana Rhinehart and Jolene Dixon. Brett Rohas won three out of four motos entered to win both the aocc (14-16) and Supermini classes. Ricky Parks and Brett Klein finish second and third, respectively, to Rothas in the aocc (14-16) class, with Parks splitting moto wins with Rothas in Supermini action. JANUARY 10, 2001 • 0: U 0: I • DeVIlS ELAINE JONES SAN BERNARDINO, CA, NOV. 18 he second week of Speedway at San Bernardino's Orange Show was Progressive Suspension Night, and there was some red-hot racing on another very cold night. Greg Hancock came up with the win in the Scratch main, while "Fast" Ed Castro made it two for two, winning the Handicap main event again this week. The first Scratch semi had Hancock on the pole, with Billy Janniro in two and England's David Meldrum in three. On the outside was Castro. Hancock cut a beautiful gate and went out on top, with·Castro working the outside in two and Janniro third. The status quo remained the same in the quick four-Iapper, and Hancock and Castro would move on to the main while Janniro and Meldrum would battle for the consi honors. The second semi had Charlie Cooley on the pole, with Stuart Robson, also from England, in two, and "Flyin'" Ryan Fisher and Mark Adams in three and four. Robson read the gate to perfection and went out on top, with Fisher in hot pursuit. Robson was dialed in and the only thing Fisher could hope for was a rematch in the main. The two transferred up while Adams and Cooley moved to the consi. The pole for the Scratch main went to Robson, with Castro in two and Hancock in three. On the outside was Fisher. Hancock again read the gate to perfection and went out on top. Robson was running second, while Castro and Fisher battled for third. On the second lap, Fisher had the edge, only to see it go Castro's way the next time around. Castro held Fisher at bay to take third by the closest of margins at the checkers. The lineup for the Handicap main event had Mark Adams on the 20yard line, all alone. Ian Ferris shared the 30 with no one, while Castro, Robson and Fisher loaded in on the 40. Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz, Hancock and Janniro were on the 50. Castro was right there, and from there on out it was clear sailing for the man from Ventura and he had his second main-event win. Janniro got around Fisher with three laps to go, and even though he got real close to raining on Castro's parade, he had to settle for second. Hancock had been on the move and he got by Fisher on the white-flag lap to take third. Fisher closed the door on Robson, and fourth went to him. Schwartz was credited with sixth. Bill McCarley was on the gas in the Division II main event. He ran away from the rest of the field and no one was even close. Billy Lyons gave it his best effort, but he could do no better than second. Dave Delbridge got by Chad Newlee on the white-flag lap to take third. Brent Smith had the lead for two laps in the Division II consi before Rudy Laurer put the move on him and took the lead and the win. Paul Hitchcock got by Smith on the whiteflag lap for second. Frank Pecce got close to Smith, trying to take third, but Smith held his line and came up with the show money. Edge Promotjons is doing a good job of putting on a Speedway show for the Inland Empire fans, and Charlie Venegas has put in many hours to build a track that is a challenge for the riders. His work has been rewarded with some very exciting racing. He has a fast-paced show and has drawn riders from Northern and Central California and Las Vegas, not to mention the riders from "across the pond."
