In the first moto, YZ400F pilo t Mark Tes ta
took the holeshot. Kawasaki rider Jim Car ley held
second. while Bergstrom ran in third . Suzuki
rider Ga ry Hollen was fourth , and KX260moun ted Jim Naegle was fifth. On the opening
lap, Carley passed Testa for the lead. Bergstrom
then went around Testa on the next la p to take
second . O n the th ird la p, Hollen hit the dirt.
Naegle moved up to fourth, and hard-cha rgin g
Sam Ramirez took over fifth after a poor sta rt.
Out front, Carley was riding smooth and fast,

behi nd . Naeg le and Ramir ez engaged in a battle
for third tha t p us hed both ride rs past Tt..'Sta.
Ju s t before halfway, Ramirez slid o u l in a

moved up to fifth.
Carley con tinued steadily with the lead, with
Bergstrom close in second. In the later stages of
the moto, th e front duo bega n to encounter
lapped tra ffic, and Bergstrom used the congestion to his advantage, dosing to within five bike
leng ths of Car ley. When the white flag came out,
Bergstrom had wh ittled Carley's lead down to
two bike lengths, but Carley too k the moto wi n
a hea d of th e Yamah a pilot. Naeg le clai med
third, w hile War ch passed Tes ta o n the last cir- •
cuit to finish up in four th.

Yama ha rider Brva n Davis rode in fifth. Just as
the racers w ere cOming throu gh the scori ng ~
tion for the first time, Carley slid out on hi s
KX250 and we nt d o wn. Ramirez was unable to
avoid Ca rley 's machine and crashed . Bergstrom
took over the poin t position. Warch moved up
to secon d, wh ile Naegle now held third. Testa
moved up to fou rth. Carley was quick to restart,
a nd he re su m ed the ra ce in fifth . Out fro n t,
Bergstro m took full advantage of his good fortune and stretched out a l a-seco nd lead. At the
halfway point, Naeg le went around Warch to
take over second . Ca rley me thodically moved
fo rwa rd un til he was u p to third w he n the wh ite
flag flew . On the last lap, Bergs tro m rod e mis·
take- free and coa-sted in for the mot o win. Carley fo und a way a ro u nd Naegle for seco nd as
the two negotiated the last circuit. Wa rch rod e in
for fou r th, w hile Ra mi rez recovered to claim
fifth.
On the day, Bergstrom's 2-1 ri des ea rned
him th e overall victory. Ca!.ley wa s ne xt best
wi th a 1-2 score, while Naegle's co nsistent 3-3
finish es placed him th ird. Warch was fou rth
with her 4-! tally, and Testa was fifth by virtue
of his 5-6 rides.
