Jeff Roehm sho wed his versatility on the chal lenging Ca rlsbad Gran Prix course - which featur es a variety of terrain, including asphalt - to
claim top honors in the Over 30 Beginn er d ivisio n at th e Southland Ra cing Association' s
monthlyGP.
CR-mounted Brad jackso n led the field in to
the sweeping left-ha nd er to claim the holeshot.
Brad Stewart controlled seco nd , and jon Wall,
Roehm and Glenn Pillsbury rounded out the top
five. Stewart qu ickly moved around jackson for
the lead . Jackson 's stint in second was short, as
Roehm picked up two po siti ons to secure th at
spo t, dropping jac kso n to third . Pillsbury an d
Wall trailed in fourth and fifth , respectively. The
top five remained. th e sam e as Stewart led. the
pack on to the motocross track.
Stewart entered the drag stri p with Roehm
hot on his heels. Pillsbury and Wall moved into
th ird and fourt h, dropping forme r leader Jackson to fifth. Stewart managed to hold off Roehm
as th e du o sp ri n te d d ow n th e dra g s t rip.

moved around Stewart in th e can yo n for th e
lead . Roeh m en ter ed the mo tocross track with a
fiv e- second ma rg in ov er Stewart . Pill sbury
trailed a distant thi rd . Wall and jackson ro unded out the top five. With Roehm and Stewart in
co n trol of first a nd se cond , respectivel y. the
eve ntu al outcome of the battle for third thr ough
fifth was un cert ain . Wall was the first rid er to
strike, as he moved around Pillsbury for third.

Berte aux picked up the pace to secure fifth.
With th e ra ce nearing the 35-min u te mar k,
Roehm enjoyed a large lead. Stew art an d Wall
were comfortable in second and third. Pillsbury
en tered the motocross track in fourt h, five seco nds ahead of Suzuki-mou n ted Andy Barth,
who came from a mid pack start to secure fifth.
Pillsbury's lead ove r Barth was red uced to a
few bike lengths as the duo left the mot ocross
track and hea ded for the dr ag strip . Barth cut to
the inside of Pillsb ury a t the sta rt of the drag
strip and m ot or ed away for fourt h, d ro pping
Pillsbury to fifth.
Roehm took the chec kers with a convincing
win. Stewa rt brou gh t his Yam aha home second.
Wall took the final spot on the podium in thi rd.
Barth finis hed a well-deserved fourth, followed
by jackson, wh o worked his way back into fifth
on the final lap.

In the secon d m o ta , Sm ith agai n got the
holes ho t and led the race to the end , with Cha ndler and Daniels rounding out the podium posi tions.

MX Series at Argyll Cycle Pa rk, Dust in Miller
di dn't initially appear to be very stro ng, but this

form .
In mot o one, Carter Gu rnee, on his 125cc
RM, got the bes t start , with Miller in hot pursuit,
closely follo we d by Kawasak i jockey Sh a wn
Pa rks a nd Yama ha man Brian Fost er, both on
250ee machines. Parks initially got by Miller but
he cou ld not hold off the 125cc Yamaha rid er ,
w ho found q ui cker lines throu gh th e m any
high -banked switchback turns. Miller charged
from third to second, relegating Parks to th ird
and Foster to fourth. Within a min ut e of taking
second, Mill er m iscu ed on a hig h·banked left,
lost the fron t wheel and stepped off on the low
side . He was u p quickl y but sti ll lost seve ra l
positions.
Late in the moto, Gurnee was the leader, followed by Foster , Parks and the lead Intermedia te rid er, KXl25-m ounted Matt Knes ek . Wi th
two laps to go, Miller got back by Parks. Within
half a lap, Knesek also got by Parks. The order
rema in ed u nc h a nge d to th e ch eckers , a n d
thou gh the tw o 125cc rid ers were within 10 feet
of each other, Gurnee held on for the win. Miller
ca m e h ome se co n d . Foster best ed Parks for
th ird . Nex t cam e the first of the Intermed iat es,
Knesek.
In moto two , Miller took the holeshot, leading Gu rnee , Foster and Par ks by the scoring station on lap one. Early in the mote, Foster was on
Mill er s' tail, as Par ks tri ed to cha llenge. Then
Knesek moved up to third place overa ll.

rid er Donny Stommel took th e holeshot. In half
a lap, StommeI stretched. his lead to mo re tha n

pilot Gary Wh ita ker. Tr y as he m ight, Ce cil
cou ld not close the gap on the lead er. Whitaker
faded and gave third to RM jockey Matt Fernandes. Cecil and Fernandes diced , swa ppin g positions. At the chec kers, it was Stommel by a wide
m arg in . Fer nandes was second, followed by
Cecil and then YZ-mounted Heath Snyde r.
In the controversial seco nd mot a, Stom mel
started as far ba ck as 11th bu t stormed to the
win. Whi tak er took the holes hot, but by lap two
Fern and es had taken the lead. ju st 100 feet from
the finis h, Stom mel passed Ferna ndes for the
win. Fern an des had a sp ill, and Petro beat him
across the line. Jamry Dille chased Heat h Snyde r
across t he line for four th and fift h o verall.

Speedway honors its own

Internati onal Speedway held its yearly awards
banquet at Rafaello's, in Oran ge, to honor all of
the riders wh o made the 1999 racing seaso n successful . The firs t awa rd of the eve ning was the
"Ha rd Luck" award, which went to Scott Brant.
Coming out of retir ement, Bra nt was high in the
point standings wh,'I1 he suffered a knee injury
in Auburn. He has u ndergone an opera tion, and
all are hoping that he w ill b ~ 4lbte to compete
again.
With 25 years as mentor, spo nsor, friend and
one heck of a good starter, it was easy to award
"Most Inspirationa l" to Jerry King, who calls his
job a "labor of love."
The "Most Imp roved " awa rd went to a Suppo rt ride r with the reputation of rid ing dr ag-leg.
In speedway, that puts you on the ground more
often than not. Rud y Lauer thanked all the veterans who ga ve him the helpfu l advi ce th at
tu rned his rid ing a round this seaso n .
Shawn "Mad " Dog" McConnell was an easy
choice as "Best Showman " of the year.
