Events exas Slate Championship Series hanksgiving Fest wan Cycle Park mlth in he gravy ER, IX, NOV. 7 fter ending a very suc cessful fiveround Texas State Championship Series , the 1999 racing season came o a close a t Swan Cycle Park with the lth annual Th anksgiving Fest. Riders m hand enjoyed a full day of practice n Saturday and were treated to a bevy f Texas barbecue and all the trimmings ate that afternoon. On Sunday, almo st 00 entered rid er s were trea ted to a picure -perfect day of racing th at a ls o ncluded Vintage events. Ho nda Tow n / LCS -backed Billy mith claimed the lronman Award for he da y, having competed and won his intage race, only to immediately re tu rn to the ga te for the Over 35 event, and inn ing th at as wel l. If that was n 't nou gh, eig ht mo tos later, Smith lined up for the Over 40 event , taking the win in tha t class as well. Whe n all was said nd done, Smi th went six for six on the day for three overall victo ries . Bobby Meche grabbed the lead in the first Over 35 mo to and looked likely to be the first rider in a long time to challenge Billy Smit h, but on th e fina l lap, Smith, who had ga ted third off the sta rt, ca me up on Meche, pa ssed him and took the win, with Meche the runner-up. Brock Fos ter raced in se con d through the first lap but fell back to fou rth when both Smit h and Ron Wipf got arou nd him on lap tw o. Foster fell on the third lap but managed to still finish the race in last pla ce. Meche once again took th e lea d in mota tw o, with Smith a t Meche's rear wh eel off the start. Smith passed Meche on lap three fo r th e lea d , b ut Mech e handily held his second- place position to the finish. You ng 60cc (10-11) racer Josh Eu re captured the holeshot off the combined 60cc (7-9) and 00-11) ga te. Tenn essee's Bra ndon Mi ller was run ner-u p off th e start but took over the lead on lap two, hold ing it to the finish . Richard White returned to the field after a three-month hia tu s to rec u perate from an injury he sustained a t Po nca City at th e en d of July, an d he raced in good form in thi rd, follow ed by Fran klin Edmund and Benjam in Page . Taylor Neu ba ue r led the you nger 60cc (6-9) charge fro m start to fi nis h , fo ll o w ed b y Aus ti n Ro g e r s, Kevin McMu llan and Lauren Powell. The seco nd- mo te start was a repeat of the first, w it h Eu re taking th e lead and Miller in the hu nt. This tim e, however, Miller fou nd his way past Eure on the first lap and cruised in for the wi n. Page gated third off the sta rt and held h is p ositi on agai nst W h i te in fo urth p lace, wh ile Edmund was fif th . Ne ubaue r had a banner day, repea ting his first-mote performance by taking the lead , the win and the overall for the 60cc (7-9) group. Ron Reese and Terry Dike battled not only in the O ver 25 Novice bu t in the Ov er 30 Novice motos as w el l. Rees e won the first motos of eac h class, but his secon d motos w ere less tha n p erf ect , even though his ove ra ll performance wa s the best of the lot. In Over 25 N ovice action, Reese took th e w in in the first rnoto, chased b y Dike, Junior Pirk le and David Hickman. In the second mota , Pirk le took the win, wi th Ree s e s e co n d a n d Dike third . Rees e' s 1-2 was good en ou gh for the overall, as Dike fell short by one point to finish third overall behind Pirkle' s second-place performan ce. In the Over 30 Novice contes t, Dike led the cha rge into the second lap before Reese passed him for the lead, wi th Dwayne Tinchn er in tow. Dike held on to. third at the finish, followed by Kevin Gee and Brent Heichelheim. Dike again led in the second mota , this tim e all the way to the che ckered flag . Reese ga ted third, behind Tinchner, but he passed into the number-tw o spot by the end of lap three to finish secon d . Reese' s 1-2 was again good enoug h for the overall wi n, while Dike had to set tle for seco nd by way of a 3-1 score. Ron' s son Daniel Reese won both the 50cc Open and 50cc (7-8) events. In 50cc Op en action , Dani el pull ed the holesh ot and took it all the w ay in for th e win, followed by Caleb Dow ell. Earlier in the program, Dowell had won the 50cc (4-6) event, keep ing his win streak goi ng; he won every rou n d o f the Texas State Cha mpions hip Series . Collin Gee held down third , followed by Nicho las Fisher, Co le Messick and Talon Hart . In the second mo to, Dowell absconded wi th the holeshot an d Fisher was second, but by the time they came around to end the first lap , Reese was out front. Dowell held the nu mber-tw o position to the finish, follo wed by Fisher, Mess ick, Hart and Gee . The 125cc Pros a nd In term ed iates were combined, wi th returning Pro rider Ryan Wallace, on the injured reserve list since Lorett a Lynn's, showing top form . Mar~ Thom pson took charge of the first mot o, chase d by Wa llace, Kev in Cagle and Beau Boynto n. For moto two, Boynton led fro m wire to wire, wit h Wallace second . Thompson finished third . Cag le rou nded ou t th e Pr o class, bu t Ry a n Wallace claimed the overall honors with a 2-2 to Thompson 's 1-3. Jesse Moore mad e his big-bike debut as well as a return to racing after being off several months due to an injury. Jesse left his minibike caree r behind and won both the 125cc Intermedi at e and 125cc Open events with a four-mo to sweep. Cod y Ch a tagnier led the first lap of the 80cc Op en contest befor e Kyle Coffman passed for the lead . Brand on Miller charged after the leaders in th ird , takin g seco nd place and finis hing ou t the race in that sp ot. SETRA Enduro Series Round 5: Capital C E ity nduro Gravitt grabs it By Kenn eth Ki n g TALLAHASSEE, FL, OCT. 24 ixty m iles of to ug h, tight, san dy tra il a t the Capital Ci ty End uro in Tallahassee, Florida, was just wha t KTM' s Allen Gravitt was lookin g for. Gravitt pu t together four good sections to claim the overall wit h the low score of four. It wasn't without a battl e, howe ver . For most of th e race , he went neck and neck wit h Team G reen 's To m my Veator - until the last section. Veator got lost, which pu t an end to his cha nces of w inni ng, tho ugh he would still take the number-tw o spot with a six. Veator was foll o w ed cl o s el y b y KTM -mounted Dou g Mas encu p, whose score of seven earn ed him thi rd . This was the 28th running of the Capital City Endu ro. The Tall ahassee Tra il Riders host the endu ro, which is co-sanction ed by the Florida Trail Rid ers. Thi s yea r's race consis ted of four timed section s for a total of almos t 60 miles. The wea ther was nice, bu t a bit dusty. The first sec tion to gree t rid ers came right at th e s ta rt, with no wa rm up. It was a tight trail , perh aps the tightest of the ra ce - 13 m iles lon g a n d fu ll of switchbacks, handl ebar-widt h trees and plen ty of wh oops. The sand was of the d eep , loo se, power-ro b b ing va ri ety; keeping one's speed up in the stuff was a must. Gravitt, Veato r and Masencup had no trouble in that area.
