Even ts every race at the California high desert track tha t his schedule has pe rmitted him to ente r this year. In the Formul a One event, Graves was the first racer off the line on his M ich e lin -s hod Yamaha YZP-Rl. Curtis Adams emerged in seco nd and Lu cio N ico lodai in thi rd . Howev er , midway throu gh lap two, N icolodai crashed in tum four , bringing out the red flags. . In the res tart , Graves o nce again powered into the lea d, wi th Ada ms aga in in seco nd and Ken Chase in third. Rou nding tu m two, Chase was able to maneuver aro und Adams to move into seco nd , but Ad ams powered past Chase in the back straight on the same lap. Starting lap two, Mark Mill ei had set his sights on Chase and w as abl e to momentarily mov e int o th ird . However, a mechan ical problem quickly developed o n Mi ller's mo to rcycle, forcing him o ut of the race and movi ng Vincent Haskovec int o third. Halfwa y throu gh th e eight-l ap eve n t, picked off Steven to capture the lead , which he ma intained to the fin ish for the ov erall wi n, ahead of Stevens (2-2) and Rogers (6-3). Casey, w ho for the pas t severa l ye a rs has been a consistent Expert-class winner, picked up a win in the 250cc Expert Vintage class, lead ing Hond a-m ounted Jim Row, the top Interm ed iate rider, and fellow Exper t Dennis Sweeten to the finish in bo th mot os for his only win of the day. Row , by vi rtue of h is sec o nd -plac e fini shes to Cas ev, was the overall Intermediate winner, finishing ahead of Sweeten each time out. Sweet en was the recipient of poor starts all day long and worked to third, second -placed Expert, ahead of th e seco nd- a nd th ird-placed Intermediates David Chappel and Jeff Gleason . Ca nad a's Ken Bur ningham, winner of the com bined O ver SO Expert /Intermed iate mot os , was a three-class wi nner, posting victories in the Over 50, Pr lt-1970 and Fo u r-Stroke Vinta ge classes a board his BSA. Burningham was pushed hard in his Over 50 race by Rick Down ing and George Eadie, the top Intermediate riders in mo tos one an d two, respectively. Coming past the s tart-finish line on the next lap , Adams' mo torcycle clearl y sound ed as though a mechanica l problem had developed, an d was slowing hi m down. On lap six, Chase caug ht and passed Ada ms dow n the back s traigh t to m ove in to th ird. A t the line, it was Graves with the w in, followed by Haskovec secan d and Chase third. "I got really lucky today: ' said Graves after th e ra ce . "My motorcycl e was r unn ing really well and my Michelin tir es worked great." Graves also won the Bridgestone/Racer's Edge Formu la Two GP event, lead ing from the d rop of the starter' s flag to the finish . Following Graves off the lin e was Bryce Gr oss , with Bryan Kovarick in thir d . However, o n lap two, Kovarick slowed drastically goin g into turn six, allowing Sam Camibucci to move into third . Halfway throu gh the eigh t-lap race, three riders closed up and began to challenge Carnib ucci for thi rd . Clifford Ad aptante was a lso im pressive as the run ne r-up, pulling out a va riety o f tric ks, including a Sara n Wrap; a Lazy-Boy; a sciss or kick, sea t-gra b, Su pe rm an; a whipped nac-nac: a Cord ov a ; a tw o- foo ted, o ne- ha nded ca n-can; a nd a twitch . H is candy ba r an d bar hop we re fairly typical - except that he land ed both while s till in position (one foo t over the bar for the first, bot h over the ba r for the second). Th e Meta l Mu lis ha ' .s Bria n Deegan a nd La rry Linko gle w ere the ir typica l cheerful se lves, "a ccid e n ta lly" sneaking sw ea r words into int erviews and th reatening to have their friends in the crowd beat up those who didn't suppor t them . Frees tyle is usua lly a sid eshow, but here, w here it was the main dish, downtime entertainm en t was provided by a hi gh -jump co n tes t (which was won by Adam Pierce) and Speed & Style . a timed ra ce that awards extra points for ae rial tri cks .
