Screws MURRAY, KY, OCT. 16 With th ~ Kentu cky Tennessee MX Association's poin ts series wind ing d own, Tyson Ezell and Brad y Orr contin ued their seasonlo ng, backand-forth battl e to see w ho will reig n as t he KTMXA's 6Scc (7-11) points series champ . On a pleasan t Saturday afternoo n, just outs ide o f Murra y, Ken tu ck y, t he two yo u th s mounted their KTMs and took on the challenge of the tight, techni cal, tire-hookin' clay 01 the .6mile Murray Supercross track. At stake were the first-place points in race 21 of the KTMXA's 23rou nd championship point s·series. When the startin g gate fell for the seven~lap ma in, 13 screaming 65cc hornets all vied for the holes hot. As they ap p roa che d the end 01 th e stra ig h taway, on e ad rena line -p u mped you ng hornet zigged when he sho uld have zagged, and he wiped out . KTMs and Kawa saki s swerved and slid , bobbled and bounced as the young riders tried to maintain control of their machines. Four riders went down - Ezell amon g them. Orr escaped unscathed . Ca p ita liz ing on the chaos, O rr took th e holes hot, geared down hard into the first turn, aire d ou t a small tab letop and then let 'er rip, never looking back. Ezell regained his com pos u re , kic ke d his KTM back to life and , like a man on a mission, meth odically picked his way thr ough the pack. It took a ta nkfu l o f persistence, pati en ce an d d esire for the you ng rider to make an impr essive come back. And he did . By the white-flag lap , the fans were on their feet , poi n ting and che ering, as Ezell took the inside of a corner and sho t past the Kawasak i of Chase Thomas to take over second place. With less than one lap to go, Ezell set his sights on Orr and piloted his 65cc hornet to wilhin a few bike lengths of Orr's rear fende r. Ho wever, too much th ro ttle and too litt le traction tossed Ezell as he legged into a steeply banked corner in the midsecti on of the track. He was up as quickly as he 'd gone dow n, bu t it wasn' t quite qu ick eno ugh. Ezell man aged to save a second-place finish, just slightly ahead of Thoma s. Orr took the win . Ezell and Orr then sadd led their 65cc KTMs and waged war agains t the big boys in the 85cc Junior class. (Who says you can't roller-ska te in.a buffalo herd ?) Ezell, who is also in another battle with the 85cc Suzuki-mounted. Austin Wells for first place in the 85cc Junior class, kep t himself focused and his 65cc machine upright to take home first-place honors in the 85cc Junior main. Orr managed to ride smart and finished fou rth. Not to be ou tdo ne by the "youngun," as he calls his younger brother. Kenny Dale Orr rode his Suz uki of Paris-sponsored bike in his usual smo o th, flow in g, li ne-orien ted s ty le to tak e hom e the firs t-pla ce points in bo th th e 85cc Senior an d Supermini classes.
