A goo d ride r tu rn out made for a full d ay of raci ng o n the Na tional track of Glen Helen Racew av . The series fina le pitted the visiting Northe rn-region rid ers aga ins t the ho m e-field Sou thern region reg ulars. By lap thr ee, Em ig was pushing Carl son, and he was ha nded second pla ce when Carlson 's fro nt end wa s hed out o n a downhill. Emi g reeled in Up to n, but Up to n did a co m me nda ble job of keepi ng Em ig' s Yam ah a at bay for a few laps before Em ig was fin all y a ble to m ak e the pass d own the front stra ight near the halfway po int of the race. W it h a clea r tr ack a h e a d of him , Emig easi ly motored away to earn a little spending cas h wit h the wi n. "They wa tered the trac k a bunch, and it was rea lly slo ppy an d you co u ld n' t pu sh m an y o f th e ins ide lin es , so it forced it into a one- line situation, and I went thro ugh tear-offs real qu ick," said Ernig . w ho was ge tting suppor t from White Bro thers, NCY, FM F, The Edge and Bridgestone on the da y. "U pto n and Carlson were setting a good pace. Up ton goes fast; he com es to these local events and he really hooks it up. The track was slippery and it would have been easy to M . m m m ,..: ~ CI> .J:> E ~ z 18 go down, so I just rode a nice, comfortab le pace." Ev en with a flat rea r tire, U pto n was qu ick eno ug h to ea rn the seco ndplace mo ney . "I ha d th e lead," Upton said after the race. "Then I go t a flat tire about ha lfw ay th rough th e ra ce. I sta r ted noticing my back end was slidi ng out an d I did n't know wh at it was for a little w hile. Then Emig go t by me and I d idn't ha ve any th ing for him after the flat . I was just trying to save second place then." Th e ba ttle fo r third p lace was a go od o ne betw een Carlson and Co ncord Kawasak i's No rthrop, and it lasted for the seco nd half of the race, with Carlson eventua lly pr evailing. "I g o t a g oo d s ta r t a nd ca me u p behi nd Upton, an d I knew Emig was ou t there, and I knew he was cool and wasn' t going to be a dick, bu t I started wo rry ing abou t him a little bit, and Upton started pulling away," explained the F&5 Suzuki / Sinisalo /Shoei /CTI / RG E/ Arnettebacked Carlso n. "T hen I lost th e fron t end. I got back up in thir d, but my levers were a little bent. I tried to pu t it together toward s the end of the race and close back in on Upton. It was a good race." Kady cro sse d the finis h line in fifth, behin d Northrop. Zeb Armstrong took s ixt h, a h ead of Carter Gurn e e and Michael Sleeter, who both went down in the first turn off the st art. Rookie Pro Kevin Townsend was ninth, with Tra vis Mar ks round ing out the top 10. Carlson returned to lead the first four laps of th e single 20-m in ut e 125cc Pro ra ce before bein g caugh t by Don o van Mitch ell, wh o ju st recentl y signe d o n wi th KTM. Mitchell look ed impressive as he led the remaining eight laps to collect th e win . Northrop p u t in a n aweso me rid e, com ing from the middle of the field to ea rn the second-place cash, ahead of Tim Beatty, Carlson and Sleeter. Hond a-m ounted Tu rbo Reif upheld the ho nor of the No rthe rn region wi th a two-m oto sweep of the 250cc Intermed iate class. Kevin Gahan su ffered a couple of bad starts, but he wa s fast enoug h to slice a ll the wa y up into a pa ir of runn er-up finis h e s b eh ind Re if. Things were switched in round two, as Lan inov ich la id was te to th e hu ge class to go 3-1 for the ove rall , w hile Reif cras hed out of con ten tio n. Moo re got a goo d start a nd eventually worked his way around Sean O'Conn~r to go 2-2 on the d ay . O ' Connor wen t 4-3 for third over the 9-4 of Na tha n Craig and th e lOS of Jeff Eide. No rthe rn rid e r Du stin En ochs showed the locals a th ing or two as he took h o m e overa ll wi ns in t he 60cc Intermediate and 60cc Ope n classes o n his KTM.
