A no ther incentive may have been ru ffled feathers. He was riding far back from the rest of the AA pack, on minute 41, a fairly late nu m ber for Delaware and considere d a handicap by most. "I do n't know w hy I' m back he re," Lafferty commen ted before th e s tart, "an d I really don' t care. I' m still goi ng to bea t them all by 10 po ints ." La fferty was definitely rid ing with the confid ence of Mu ha m mad Ali, but acco rdi ng to end uro referee Charlie Stapleford, no sligh t was intended . "Michael sen t in his entry late, pure an d s i m p le," sai d Stap le fo rd . " H e m issed the d raw in g and w e foll owed the ru les an d gave him the next nu mber available . With the seaso n d ecided at the Michiga n rou nd, most nati on al AA competitors si m p ly s tayed home, a sit ua tio n Rand y Hawkins tried to alleviate. "I wan ted to ge t as many riders as I could u p to Delaw ar e, jus t to help the club out. I talked toFred And rews and some of the othe r G NCC guys, just tr yin g to ge t s o me m ore rid er s up , " Hawkins said a week befor e the even t. His efforts d idn 't pan ou t, as he a nd La fferty were the on ly major nat ion a l AA rid ers in at tendance. That's not to say th ey we re lon ely.
