Sande rson CUFFORD,PA,OCT. 17 Jason Babern itch and Bear Hughson ea rned overa ll win s in th e Co llegebcy and 250cc Open C classes , respectively, at a regu lar Distri ct 6 points ra ce hosted by Tom Hurd Promo tions at th e Hurrican e Hills Spo rts Cen ter. Mothe r Nature coopera ted by providing a beautiful fall day, a nd more than 200 riders signed up to race 27 classes. H ughson and )im me r ~I er earned holeshot ho nors in th e first Co llegeboy mot o. Th e tw o were side by side through the 9O-degree left first turn. Miller had the point posi tion by the time th e lea ders e ntered th e rh yt hm se ctio n, and Hu gh son was relegat ed to "second . Rounding ou t th e top five w er e Fred Metzger , Jason Woeniski and Scott Marzec. Hu ghson was do ing the spt.Cta tor triple o n the firs t la p. Hu gh son took ' the lead on lap two , w he n he aga in tripl ed and Miller d idn' t, but Miller managed to ge t back aro und H ughson for the lead off the hu ge Hu rricane Hills step- up. H ug hso n dropped to S<.'COnd , still followed by Metzger, Wocn iski and Marzec. Miller q uic kly got aro und Metzger for second in the rhythm section. The ru nning order was now Hughson . Miller, Metzger, Wocni ski a n d Kimb le . Th e top fi ve sp rea d o u t a n d rema ined unchan ged for the rema inde r of th e mota . The only battl e that developed was for the lea d . Miller closed th e ga p on H ug hso n bu t coul dn' t manage to get around him. Hughson j Q E Gl ~ Z 50 took the w in, followed by Miller, Metzger, Wocniski and Kimbl e. By the ha lfwa y mark of la p one, Stafursk y was still ou t front, wi th Good rich, Babernitch, O' Malley and Bill Matthews in tow. Babernitch pa ssed Good rich for sec on d on la p tw o. O' Ma lley and Matthews held on to fourth an d fifth. Nea r the halfway mark of lap two, following th e hu ge Hurricane s te p-u p , Babern it ch pa ssc..J Stafu rs ky fo r th e lead . Goodrich th en stalled his yz in a turn, allowing O'llolall y and e Matthews to m o ve up to third and fourth . Goodrich dropped to fifth. At the end of lap two, Mar zec and Andy Mas ters passed Goodrich for fourth and fifth . Babernitch took the checkered flag with a Io-second advantage, trailed by Stafursk y, O'Malley, Masters and Marzec. Bloch nailed the holeshot in the second 250cc Open C moto. Trailin g him we re Marzec, Ton y Yag loski , Geo rge Ban d a nd Ma ster s. Near the halfway mark of lap one, Masters passed Band for fourth. On lap two, Yagloski passed Mar zec to take S<.'COnd. Masters held fourth. and Babernitch moved up to fifth. Yagloski passed Bloch for the l.eadat the end of lap two . The finishing order was Yagloski. Bloch. Marzec. Masters and Babernitch. J....-red Kimble I, MI, sm. 4-6 Moreland 's held a three-day event on the Labor Day weekend , an d alon g with the actio n-packed racin g. 40 rock 'n' ro ll ba nd s too k to the stage for the traditional Battle of the Band s. On Saturday, ther e was a very large turnout of racers , many of whom arrived Frid ay nig ht and ca mped o ut und er the sta rs. Th e weat her was typical for lat e summer - hot and humid. In the Wom en's class, three riders came o ut to compete. Brandy Chupp of Wh ite Cloud, Michigan, won , with Vanessa McDonald seco nd and Kim Dines third. In the 125cc A class, Ian Hammond of Ypsilanti , Michigan, took th e win over three ot her riders, bu t the 125cc B class ha d 25 riders at the ga te, and Da nny Becke tt Jr. of Gra nd Rapi ds , Michigan, too k a ll the ma rbles. O u t of the 35 125cc C competitors, Rya n Micho of Allendale, Michigan, took home the first -pl ace gold. Sunday was another fine day at Moreland's. Ma ny of Saturday' s racers stayed, and more arrived, making for another huge turnout of 1250. Da\;d Fink of Petoskey, Michigan. was riding at the top of his game. He won the Non.current class, for 1994-and-older bikes. In the 80 Beginner cla ss, Stuart Alexan der rod e a biKe borrowed from Max Lovejoy. Alexa nder could not hold off Smi th in the seco nd mota an d ha d to settle for seco nd overa ll. The 250cc A and B rid ers put on a grea t air show for the specta tors. At the Road sid e Triple, Ken n y Ry a n d id a g rea t Su per man m ove. Almos t every com petitor wa s doing o ne· han· clers and w hips and waving to the cro wd . Ryan we nt o n to wi n t he 250cc B even t, an d Brad Kress of Alma wo n the 250cc A class. Labo r Da y had fewe r riders competing, but there was still a very healthy turnout. This is the day Ameri cans honor worke rs, and non e wo rk hard er than the Mor eland 's crew. The track ovo'tl· ers, Carl an d Ire ne, can be fou nd working the en trance gate at every race. Mark Mo reland takes gr eat care of the track, design ing and bu ilding new secti ons and obstacl es during the week and ov e rsee in g ma in te na n ce o n race da ys . C li n t Moreland runs the sta rting ga te, and his sister Colette wo rks at sign-up and scorin g, along with Michell e Moreland. Terry Watts is the track refL"l't."'C, and he d oes all of the live race anno uncing. All those w ho wo rk to keep Moreland 's go ing deserve recognition for all their hard work. The 50cc Sha ft Drive class had five riders, with Dougie Moline of Sparta taking the win ove r Austin Ne lso n. In the \'ery po pular 50cc Auto-matic Beginners class, for kids just starting out, nine riders competed, with Steven Trierweiler of Lowell, Michigan , winning ove r Bretten Riller.
