P ysonRodeo G a rounds Hannegan Speedw y a Dahners outfoxes Lykke at the Dirty Dog By Tory Briggs '" '" '" o Q; .c E ~ z 46 BELllNGHAM, WA,SErf. 26 Jason Dahners , backed by KTM Sportmotorcycles, took a gia nt ste p closer to his goal of taking the coveted Northwest Motorcycle Associat ion Off-Road Champ ion s hip a wa y fro m defender David Lykke at the nin th round of the 12-race series. Ha rmegan Speedway provided a challenging hare· scra mbles course that mi xed tigh t, twi sty trails with part of the quarter· mile banked ova l and eve ry se ction of bot h mo tocross tr ac ks, induding hu ge doubl e jumps and table tops and an evil ISO-yard whoop section . Lykke's superior moto skill wit h his YZs and his knowled ge of his home track had given him the margin of victory over Dahners at a previous round two races ago . Dahners, with his extensive Na tional experi~ ence, ad justed his ra ce strategy from tha t previ · ous round, and he succeeded in pu tting enough pressure on the Lynnwood Yamaha -supported Lykke to cause a cras h, whic h gave th e KTM pilot a comfo rtable cus hion on whic h he cou ld cruise to victory. " I knew David h a d th e ed ge in th e mot ocross sectio ns," Dahners said after his win. " I a lso knew he had to pit tw ice to my on ce. Rather than try to ou trun him, I chose to simply stay clos e un til he took that second pit , and then ge t out of sigh t quic kly." Lykke, sensing h is di lemma, a tte mpted to pi ck u p the p ace enough to bu ild a ma rgin to cover the second pit, only to end o fer ocious ly over a log that had been moved into the fast line by ano ther racer' s crash. Lynnwood's Rya n Van Dyken assumed the early- race le a d a fter Auro ra Su z u ki -backed Kevin BaiJey;who had taken the holesh ot d ecisively, sna pped the Pro Tapers off his RM250 at the mou nt wh ile in tera cting with a tree. Skagit Powerspo rts-suppo rted Gary Furrenes put in ano ther hard ride on his KX2S0 for yet anothe r th ird overa ll, clearly fas ter by far than a ll the rest but not quite able to ru n with the two speedsters vying for the cha mpionship . Privateer Aa ro n Wilson seemed to have four th nailed on his YZ400, but jus t as at the last Hannegan even t, A Open rid er Jake Hulse charged all race long to grab tha t posi tion. Lodi CycleBow l Rodriguez rolls at LodiST&TI By Mike Law LODl, CA OCT. 9 , Alth ough the ad age "Life begins at 30" has often be e n rep e at e d , Ha y w ar d rid er Arma nd o Rodriguez red efined the meaning of tha t phrase as he soun d ly won th e Vet shor t-tra ck mai n event, thoro ughly trou ncing some of the district's finest. Although Rodrigu ez scored a w ire-to-wire rout in the main , getting to the main was quite another story. He orchestrated a fine show of aer ial acrobatics in an earlier heat race and basically . wa lke d awa y u nscathed . In winn ing th e Ve t main, however, Rodrigu ez comfortably ou td istanced Rob McDonn ell a nd Bob Bacosa: two of the fastest Vet rider s in nort hern California. "Tonigh t' s race was a litt le bittersweet for m e, becau se I only n eed ed one po int to tu rn Expert," said Rodrigu ez. 'W inn ing the Vet class was n't qu ite as intense as the Ope n class, but I believe tha t I show ed everyone that I could run with the best of them . Hopefully, next year, 1will be the guy that they will have to wa tch out for." At the other end of the spectrum , Pee Wee Expert Danielle Ca ldeira had the fines t rid e of her yo ung car eer, scorin g win s in both the Stock and Mod ified short-track classes and then finishi ng a close second in the Stock IT. Cald eira sound ly bes ted the likes of Ryan Law and Chad Cose , the top two Pee Wee rid ers in the di strict, as well as ultrafast Cobra rider David Sharkey in the Modified class . " I go t good sta rts ton ight and was able to stay on the groo ve," Calde ira sa id . "My problem in the pa st has been p utting my foot down too much, so I worked on that and stayed real hard on the gas." The 250cc A and B short-track ride rs put on a spec tacu lar show, as many of the 8Occ-elass riders have recently moved up to this rapidly growing class. Casey Yarrow blasted his way into the lead ahea d of rivals Freddy Poli , Jason Grewe and Stewart Barber . Yarrow imm ed iately set a blistering pace, while Grewe was mid pack aboard his flying Suzuki. Wit h three la p s in th e books, Gr ewe turned on th e afterbu rners and passed Poli for secon d while cu tting some of the fastest lap limes of the main eve nt as he chased the fleein g Ya rrow . Gr e we cont in u pd hi s chase, but Yarrow was sim ply too far ahead for Grewe to catch at the d leckered flag, and he won by a comfortable margin . An hon orable men tion goes to 'Clable fourt h, Stewart Barber, who placed a respc behi nd Poli, on his debu t ride in the 250cc class. Tony Sou za won a wire~to -wire victory in the Open A short-trac k ma in, cap p ing d early th e fines t Lod i ma in this yea r.
