Mota-King E~treme Racing Board Game t's a word tha t's not used eno ug h in th e English la ngu age: Braaap! Go ahea d, p reten d you're a two-stroke m otocr os ser, p inned and pri m ed to hoo k up, and say it - "Braaap!" Wasn't tha t fun? If yo u play the new Mo to-King Ext reme Ra cin g Boa rd Game (known from here on in as Moto-King), you get to say "Braaap!" every lap . In fact, if you forge t to say "Braaap" it'll cos t yo u $50. Since I'm the only one in the departm e nt w it h ch il d re n, I' m the officia l ga me tester at Cycle News. So when the new (and only?) motocross board ga me s howed up, th e Carru thers cla n was called on to roll the dice. After ge tting thr ou gh the ins tructions (not my forte), we were off and running. I was the banker (read "promo ter"), so I was in charge of the mon ey (finally, my cha nce to be PACE!). Like little Jer emys, we w er e all given s tart mon ey by th e p romo te r (m us t be a Eu ropea n Su percross), thou gh I d oubt if McG ra th wou ld ge t ou t of be d fo r th e p ittance of $1500. Anyway,we were pr im ed . Seve n-yea r-old Kv le see med h ~Ilbent o n wi nn ing , 10-ye ar-o ld Karly seemed ra the r pas sive, and I was more in terest ed in wa tching ' the World Series th an pl a ying a b oa rd ga me. (Fo r m e, t hey' re u su all y bored ga mes!) Wit h the ro ll of the di ce, I jumped out to an immedi ate lea d (moving my miniature mot orcycle w it h reckl es s di s reg ard for m y own sa fety) , winnin g the ju m p contes t a nd collecting $100 for my efforts. (Luckily, I di dn't need a tatt oo to win.) Each piece of the track where you land after rolling the d ice h as some sort of mot ospeak, I with a cash prize, pe na lty, or just words of encouragement (breathel). To say I was never headed would be an understa tement. Despit e a trip to First Aid (I'd purchased insurance like any good racer and was released almost immediately, ra ther th an having to roll doubles), I maint ained my lead over the course of the race - much to the chagrin of Kyle, who now tu rn ed his attent ion towa rd beating his sister . No lead in th is game is safe, however. You never know w he n you're going to land on a "Go For It" an d pull a card th a t' s nega tive - for exa m p le, broken chai n - p a y $50 a nd go b a ck eig h t spaces. A few of th ose can kill a so lid lead and constantly invoke ho pe in your pursu ers. In add ition to the "Cras h Pit" tha t sends you back to First Aid , there are numerous p en alt y s po ts Product Evaluation , raaa • along the way - spaces such as "Hit by Flyi ng Rock" a nd "M ud Hol e." Th ere are also good spots on w hich to land spaces suc h as "Mo to- Ki ng Fac to ry Ride:' w he re you su d denly ge t yo u r pa rts for nothing. C..and your chicks for free?) The bo ttom line was tha t the thre e of us h ad a good time pl ayin g the ga me (wha t World Series ?), a n d I wo n . Kari y ended up second, thou gh she d id have to complete one fu ll lap while sta ndi ng up (literally) after land ing on the d read ed, "Race r Mu st Stand" space. Kyle was third, complai ni ng all the way that the d ice we ren' t rolli ng the correct way for him . N a tu ra lly, th e race w a sn 't lon g enou g h, becau se if it had go ne a few m ore laps, he ce r ta inly wo u ld ha ve wo n, Kyle said. I'd had eno ug h: Tossing the dice had gi ven me arm pump.
