Sanderson BINGHAMTON, NY,SEPT. 26 a tionally ranked Pro rid er Bruce Stratton d omi na ted the 12Scc, 2S0cc, 'lnd Over 25 Open Expert classes, carding perfect 1-1 scores in all th ree divis ions, at th e 17th a n n ual Ka w asa ki Tea m G reen /Pire lli Tires New York & Tri-State Motocross Championsh ips, hos ted by Tom Hurd Promotions at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center. Mother Na ture provided a beautiful fall day for great racing on the full BroomeTioga Na tional track. Tom Hurd and his crew pro vided a perfectly prepped track for so me of the best racing the facility has seen all seaso n. More than 500 riders signed up to race in 24 classes . You ng Ryan Mills, only 14 years old and already a threat in the Expert class, nailed the holesh ot in th e fir st 12Scc Expe rt mo to but was quickly relegated to second by Josh Sterritt. Stratton was third, Casey Higgins fourth a nd Scott Rockwell fifth. Stratton passed Mills for second just after the sk i ju mp to take second. When the leaders appeared at the top of the ational hill, Stratton was out front, with Sterritt, Mills , Higgins and Rockwell in tow. Stratton began to pull a way at the s ta rt of lap two. Mills, on the move, passed Sterritt to regain second just after the start of lap two. By the sta rt of lap three, Stratton was out in front by nine seconds . the top four sp read out, but there was a freight train of riders trying to get aro und Rockwell, each rider vying for a top-five finish. Higgins passed Sterritt for third on the National hill. Jason Fox fina lly manag ed to pass Rockwell for fifth. The top five were qui te spread out by the start of lap four, and the orde r at the finish was Stratton, Mills, Higgins, Sterritt and Don Schmidt. Mike Dou gherty Jr. earne d holesh ot honors in the second 12Scc Expert moto, trailed by Mills, Higgins, Ster ritt a nd Mike Finnert y. Stra tton did not get the kind of start he is accustomed to, and he had to work his way in to the top five. When the lead ers came off the hill, Mills was ou t front. Dou gh erty dropped to second . Schmidt passed Finnerty fo r fifth. Stratt on had worked his way up to fifth by the start of lap two , and Schmidt N 48 Ryan Mill s gets the first-moto hole shot in the 12Scc Expert class at the 17th annu al New York & Tri-State Championships, hel d at the Broome-TIoga Sports Center in Binghamton, New York. Mills placed second to Bruce Stratton. was al ready feeli ng the pressure of a hard-cha rging Stratton. Stratton got Schmid t on the up hill triple just after the Pro finish- line do uble. Schmidt dropped to fourth. When the leaders became visible a t the to p of the hill, Mills and Dougherty still had the top two spots, but Stratton was now in third and pressu ring Dougherty for second. Higgins and Schmidt rounded out the top five. Mills had a five-second lead by the start of lap three. Stratt on made the pass on Doug herty for second just before the sta rt of lap fou r. By the time Mills got the white flag, Stratton had managed to cut his lead to a cou ple of bike lengths. Mills only had to ho ld Stratton off for o ne. mo re lap - bu t it was not to be . Stratton came off the Nationa l hill in the lead . Mills d ropped to second. The moto w ent in th e book s as Stra tto n, Mill s, Higgins, Schmidt and Dougherty. Strat ton earned the overall with his perfect II score. Round ing out the podium were Mills and Higgins . Bear Hughson nailed the holeshot in the first 250cc Open Amateur moto. In tow were David Ginolfi, Jim Joy, Ryan O'Malley and Rich Atkinson. Ginolfi had the point position w hen he came off the National hill. Hughson dropped to second . Zy Braun was now third . O'Malley held fourth, and Mike Leav itt was now fifth and charging. Braun passed Hughson for second on lap two . Hugh son dropped to third . Ginolfi had a 15-second lead by the start of lap three. Rounding out the top five were O'Malley, Leavitt, Hughson and Braun. The moto went in the record books as Gi nolfi, Leavitt, Hughson, Joy and O'Malley. Co nfident after his first-moto win, Ginolfi took the lead early in the second mot o and never loo ked back. Traili ng him we re Leavitt, Matt Hibbar d, Atkinson and And rew Pingotti. Pingotti passed Atkin son for fourth just before the front su pe rcross section . Wh en the lead er s came off the hill, the top two remained unchanged . Pingotti was now third, Hibbard fourth and Joy fifth. Joy passed Hibbard for fourth just after the start of lap tw o. Near the end of lap two, Hibbard . regained fourth, dropping Joy to fifth. GinoUi took the moto win, followed by Leavitt, Pingotti , Hibbard an d Ricky Conle y. Ginolfi earned the top podium spo t with his perfect 1-1 sco re. Jarrett Newby, G ACalnomia F MX Series North all Round 5 :CarnegieRaceway Ketcham can catch 'em By Jim and Valerie Enos TRACY, CA, OCT. 10 esse Ketcham went into the second mot o of th e 250cc Pro race with a thi r d -pl ace first -mo to score a nd knowi ng he had to win to ha ve a ny cha nce a t the overall. A gu tsy last-lap pass on Dani el Blair sealed the quarterliter win and the overall for Ketcham at the fifth and final round of the 1999 GFl Californ ia Fall MX Series, held at the Carnegie Raceway. In the 125cc Pro class, Jeff Northrop rode his Kawasaki to the overall win. Going into the second moto wit h a second-place first-mo to sco re, he ba rely held off Ketcham to post a 2-1 score on the day. Making his fir st appearance in the series an impressive one, Blair absco nded wit h th e h oles h ot in bo th 2S0cc motos and looked like he had the speed to win , but he just could n't hold off the late cha rges of No rthrop in moto one or Ketcham in moto two. As th e 2S0cc Pro s lined up o n th e gate, they we re joined by a new face C ra ig Truglio . Com in g off a r ecent should er inju ry sus tained at the Loretta Ly n n's Am ate u r Champions hips, Trug lio has had a very successful stint in the Intermed iat e class, a nd he wa s lookin g forw ard to continuing his winnin g ways in t he Pro ranks. Truglio mu stered a respectable 6-7 score on the day, good enough for seventh overall. The ga te dropped, and Blair took the holesh ot , ah ead of Yam aha rid er Cliff Cook a nd Ketcham. Blair led the field for abou t half the moto, Northrop got a mid pack start, but he soon hook ed up with Ketcham , wh o was now in second. J T he d u o ba t tled b r iefl y, an d then Nor t h rop turned it o n an d p assed Ket cham, and then set ou t afte r Blair. No rthrop followed Blair for severa l laps, waiting for a mistake. However, Blair ro de smoothly, so o n th e las t lap, North rop d ecid ed to mak e his move, outjump in g Blair ove r a tabl e top. Nort h ro p to ok t he w in o ve r Bla ir. Ketcham held off Coo k for third, with Seth Young rounding ou t the top five. In moto two, Blair again snagged the holeshot, but t his time Young and Ketcham were right on his tail. Northrop was dead last after a mishap on the start. Blair and Ketcham challenged each other lap after lap . Blair hu ng tough, knowin g a win would give him the overall. Meanwhile, Northrop quickly made his way through the 1Q-rider field and joined the battle at the front. On the white-flag lap, Ketcha m mad e his move on top of the hill, wi th an outside line tha t Blair just co u ld n' t d efend . All eyes w er e on Northrop, as a pass on Blair would give him the over all , bu t as th e trio cam e acros s th e finish line; Northrop trailed Blair by a bike length. Ketcham took the wi n and th e overall via a 3-1 score. Blair's 2-2 was good enoug h for second on the day, over No rthrop . In the first 125cc Pro moto, Ketcham took the holeshot, but Cook had a bet ter d ri ve at th e ens ui ng tabl e top a nd he to ok th e lea d . Nor th ro p and Na tha n Tiearney went d ow n in th e first tu rn, and Truglio seized thi rd. Ketcham an d Coo k flew over the jumps side by side until Ketcham made his move at the top of th e hill, ou tb ra ki ng Coo k in to th e tricky d ownhill tu m . Ketcham opened up a little brea thing roo m an d looked read y to take the wi n. Mean wh ile, North ro p worked his way past Tieamey and Truglio, and he eventually mad e his way up to Ketcham, p ushing him all the way to the checkered flag. Ketcham held on for the wi n over Northrop. Cook, Tiearn ey and Trug lio rounded out the top five. In moto two, No rthrop and Ketcham both got grea t star ts. Northrop .had the lead, with Ket cham all o ve r him the en tire mot o. Ketcham wanted th e win a nd w as trying every li ne he co u ld . Though the two were rarely in the same line, Ketcham just could n' t ge t a w heel in on No rthrop. As the checkers wav ed, it was Northrop with a bike length over Ketcha m, followed by Tiearney, Cook and Tru glio. Going into the first 125cc Interm ed iate moto, Yama ha pilots Rya n Morais a nd Steve Mertens were separated by just one poi nt for the series champio ns hip . In m ot o one, Billy ju revich, Tu rbo Reif and Mertens went down at the start. Morais got a clean start, and it a ppeared he wo uld take the win , However, o n the last lap, a seized piston b rou ght Mo rais to a s udden ha lt . Honda-m ounted Kenny Heess took the win, while Mertens ma naged to climb all the way back up to third. Morais was cred ited with a 13th-place finish. Goin g into moto two, a top-10 finish was all Mertens needed to take the championship , and , based on his comeback in moto one, that should n't have been difficu lt . However , abou t halfwa y, Mo rais had a hu ge lead and Mertens had just passed David Boothe for second when disas ter struck again . This time, though, it struck Merten s. As he came ' across the hill, he was out of shape when he made the left tum and he came tumb ling down the hill. The .fall left him on the ground, unconscious, for about five minutes. By the tim e Merten s finally shook off th e cobwebs and was able to walk under his own power , the moto was ov er , and Morais had won . Mertens was credi ted
