I The fir st th ing r had to do was figure out a way to fold my body aro u nd a bike built for s o meo ne like Cham b o n , who 's a fu ll 8 i nc hes s horter th an ra m . Fortunately, I've ha d years of practice doing so aboard his fellow pocket roc ket Piro van o's hard ware, so pausin g only to not e that he u ses a stree t- pattern one-down gea rshi ft , I snuggled down behind the very broadseeming fairing , aboard the d e ep ly pad d ed sea t w ith a th ick back pad . It was really sa tisfyi ng when Cha m bo n won the next two races as a result of all this ha rd wor k, and r beli eve it was this that set us up for the cham pions hip victory. C'etait super." It ' s a m ark of how closelv Su zuki w orks with their Bel gi an a ffi1ia te tha t th e new Alstare cams were d eveloped using unfinished blanks sup plied by the factory . Those were then machinefini shed in Liege to o ffer more d w e ll than the kit camshafts used before (bu t the sa me li ft as s tock, as requir ed by Su pers por t rules ), wi th different ca m timing vi a the adjusta b le kit w heels. You ca n feel th e resu lt a t o nce when you ri d e th e Suzu k i, es p eci a lly co mpared to the '98 m achin e . Th is yea r's bike pulls o kay from very low d own ou t of any of Zo lder's trio of ch ica nes , bu t ther e's a flat spot aro u nd 8500 rpm tha t en courages yo u to use first gea r in th e tw o slo west turns. But fro m 9000 rpm upward, the engine picks up spee d very fa st, acco m p a n ie d b y a muted ho wl from th e Arrow pipe. (367.4-lb) class we igh t limit. Very trick . So too is the Suzu ki's pow er curve. After that initia l kick of revs stops buil d ing at 11,000 rpm and hold s a constant plat ea u of po w er till 13,000 revs, there's a final small d ose of extra po ke to th e 13,700 rpm peak. Well, now that's happened, and the resu lt is a bike that will lift th e fro nt w heel in third gear when you get hard on the gas, with a very meaty mi d range thanks to that flat spread of power. Th is m a ke s the Su z uki very mu ch a t hom e o n a twisty track li ke Zolder, w he re you can even short-shi ft a t 12,000 revs to keep the fron t w heel fro m go ing into o rbit cresti ng the hill after the firs t chica ne - or to get a better d ri ve through a fast sweeper like the turn fo ur righ t-h a nd er. And, we ll, every team sh ould ha ve one. In extracting all that extra power, compared to a 94-hp street GSX- R600, Alstare engineers ported and flowed the cy li n d e r head , ra ise d compression to 13 .8 :1 by skimmi ng the head, fitted their own camshafts and kit valve springs (tw o per valve, with a ra ng e of different weights available in the kit) , and w aisted the stoc k va lves to im p rove fl ow fro m th e 36.5mm Miku ni carbs.
