I too feel the need to raise the question: Why are these riders not in cluded on the ind uctee list ? Also missin g fro m th e lis t are Mike Bast (seve n-time National Spee dway Champion ) and Berni e Schre ib e r (th e fir st American to win a World Trials Ch ampion ship). I'm s u re th e AMA b oard that vo ted on the cu r re n t inductees had valid reason s for its choices and I find no fault in th em. The y a ll d es er ve the hon or. I th ink Ri cky Carmichael"is aweso me, but the depth of the field that he beat vs . th ose w ho Barnett bea t is a bit differen t. Barnett b ea t th e li kes of G love r, Ward, O'M ara, Burn worth, Keh oe, Hoiland, Gibson, Myerscough, etc. O ne yea r he wo n every mo to except the last two because he was inju red. If I remember, the ra ce s were also made up of 45 mi nute motos back then . Maybe I'm getting old, but I think Barne tt's 25 wins came vs. tou gher competition than Carmichael's did . Tom Engel West Palm Beach, FL Guardrail I' m no t a p hotog rapher, but I really liked Dave Hoe n ig 's u n d e r-th egua rdrail sho t of Nicky Hayden and Bryan Bigelow in your Del Mar Mile cove rage. Nice job. Hopefully, next season we wiII see no mo re tr aged ies, safer tra cks a nd few rainou ts. I'd also like to see mor e riders Restore the pride I'm writing abo u t the American dominance of mot ocro ss / super cross. Right in fro nt of us, the spo rt that Am ericans h ave dom ina te d for so many yea rs is bein g taken over by the Fr ench, th e Italia ns a nd other thi rd -world countrie s. Why? Because we d idn't thi nk th at this could happen an d we are lacking in hold ing on to wha t very few sports we have left. Let' s sta nd up for the sport and w ha t we have built. Don't let this slide away. With har d work and determina tion , we can once again d ominat e th is spo rt o f e nd u ra nc e a n d m enta l strengt h. I'm not kn ockin g the riders, because I think they' re grea t - but let's trea t this as a wa ke-up call. You can and wi ll dominate again. It's up to the riders. I mean, after all, I'm certain that Mr. Williams has spe nt just as many d ay s on the road i n another rider' s hand-me-down van, w renching on his ow n bikes, then riding harder and faster than most (or all) of the com pe tition . Ea ch y e ar, I'm certain .t h a t Mr . Williams has been the best of the best in his chosen sport - not for the gl ory or the money involved (there's not much of either in enduro racing), but for the love • of riding and the enjoyment of competition. I' m sure that Mr. Willia ms has don e / all th ese th in gs with a smile, and has b e en re ad y to sig n auto graphs a n d speak to fans, during time that he could have been packin g up his gear or resti ng be fore another lon g drive to th e next race. Many les ser rid ers h a v e a b ett er su pport sys tem than Ty Davis, but he's still ou t ther e wi nni ng . I guess if I had to d o as much as Ty does in order to race, I'd be little edgy once in awhile. In fac t, I' d p ro ba bly be downrig ht gro uchy. Yet eac h time I have met Ty, he has been excep tiona lly w ill ing to g ive of his tim e. He has au togra p hed numero us p o st ers for k ids in m y club , ex p la ine d th e trick new parts of h is bike , and answered qu estions with a smile. I guess if Mr . Williams wi sh es to constru e thi s as a "bad attitude" it 's okay w ith me, but I d on't think it' s fair toTy.
