held off Hawt horn e for two laps before
"The Doctor" used his surgica l skills to
slice past Coo pe r over jump 12 for the
lead . Cooper's bike began to lose power,
and Mike Cle ment passed him , followed
by Dean Lane on lap three. Chris Craft
also took advantage of Cooper's misfortu ne, getting by him on lap four . It was
la te r discovered t ha t the je t ting on
Cooper's bike was set incorrectly, causing th e KTM to bog d o w n and lose
power.
In the second mo to , Coo pe r o nce
again g ra bbed the holeshot. This time
h is jetti ng was set correctly, and his
machin e stayed strong enough to hotd
off Ha wthorne's at ta cks . Cooper firiis h ed with a la r ge le a d , bu t
Hawthorn e' s second-place fin ish took
the overall win. Cleme nt finished third ,
wh ile Lane and Craf t rou nd ed out the

return~d to the gate on Sunday to top
the 50cc Open class, over com pe titors

Rod olfo Fernandez. The third round of
t he Tommy' s Cycle Supply /MTA
Bridgestone-sp onsored event was run
in conjunction with the fifth Annual Pro
Challenge, with the majority of the 633
entered amateurs racing on Satu rday,
and onlv three selected events - the 50,
60 and 80cc Open classes - were carried
over to Sunday to p u t some time
between the 125cc and 250cc Pro events .
The se ries points leader going into
th is round , Chaz Holladay, did n't get
the start he wa nted Saturday morning,
as Derek Barath led the 50cc (7-8) ga te,
chased by Jamison Miller . By the end of
th e fi rs t la p, Rodolfo Fern a nd ez had
s li p ped b y M ill er a n d w a s hun tin g
d own Barath for the lead , while Hollada y raced at Miller's back tire, in fou rth ,
followed by Zeb Smith, Matth ew Yost
and Cole Messick. The race for the lead
nar ro wed d own to the front fou r, w ho
were so close your could thro w a blanket ove r all of them . But it was Bara th
who claimed the moto w in.
In th e secon d mo to, a reju ven at ed
Miller went out front off the start, with
Holladay nipping a t his rear knobbi es.
Miller kep t the lead a ll the way to the
checkered flag, pu rsu ed by Fern andez,
Barath a n d Sm i th . Holl ad a y came
aro und in 12th after havin g pro blems on
the first lap and then working his way
up from 14th. Miller' s 3-1 tally was good
en ou gh to b re a k a th r ee-w ay tie in
points between the 2-2 of Fernandez and
Barath's 1-3.
In Sund ay' s 50cc Open contes t, Miller
absconded with the holeshot in the first
moto and led Holladay thro ug hout the
course, eluding him from start to finish ,
with Derek Barath in third .
Barath was the fastest off the gate in
moto two, cla iming the holes hot, with
Holladay in second an d Miller in third .
On lap two, Hollad ay cha rged Barath in
the whoops for the lead , bu t Barath held
his line and rem ained ou t front. In' the
me ant im e, Mill er w a s at H oll ad a y' s
back tire an d charge d for second in the
woods, passing Hollad ay and hold ing
th e n u m ber- two s p o t to th e fin ish .
Miller' s 1-2 score once agai n netted him
the overall, while Barath had to se ttle
for second, with a 3-1.
T y ler' s own "Ba d" Brad Smith
grabbed the holes hot in moto one of the
350/650cc Open Ama teu r event, blasting his way through the first turn with

SOCC Open classes, riding away with bot h overall
wins, at the third round of the Texas State
Championship Series.
the "Longview Ranger," Cod y Sande rs,
at his rear fender. Smith held his lead
into lap two before Sanders hun ted him
d own on the fr on t s tra ig h t a nd took
ov er th e position. O nce ou t fron t, the
Longview Rang er se t a fast pace, w ith
Smith finishing in th e runner-u p spo t,
followed by Ju st in Du vall , Eric Miller
and Terry Dike.
The second mot o wa s almost a repeat
of the first, with Bad Brad out fron t off
th e s tart an d San de rs in se cond . Th is
tim e, howev er, th e Longv iew Ran ger
didn't wait until the second lap to ma ke
the pa ss. He used the first section of the
cou rs e to ta ke th e lead , a nd he nev er
looked back, clai mi ng the w in. Sm ith
finished second, once again followed by
Du vall, but this time ou t Dike finis hed
fourth an d Miller fifth.
In the Over 40 class, Darw in Hu ckabee led the charge to the first turn, in
front of Steve McCombs, who cruised in
seco nd to the finis h, with Alan Olson
thi rd and Boo Custer fourth . Robert
Po rter, be tter known as "Uncle Bob,"
rounded out the top five of the 19-ricler
gate.
In moto two, McCombs stole the lead
by way of a grea t holeshot, chased by
"Hu ck" and Ols on. Mike Com for t finishe d fourth , in fro n t of Steve Massey
and Peyton Treadwell.
On Sunday, Ronny Jackson picked
up where he left off on Saturday, grabbing the 60cc Open holeshot, in front of
Tyler "Bu ll" Begu e. By the end of the
first lap, though, Begue was at the back
of th e pac k and Matt Lemoine wa s in
the ru nner-up spot, behind Jackso n. Jake
Lowry raced in thir d, followed by Cody
Stark, Rod olfo Fernandez and the rest of
the 21-rider gate. Stark chased Lowry
into th e last lap before he staked his
claim for third, pus hing Lowry back to
fourth. "Bull" cha rged to finish fifth at
the checke red flag, having worked his
w ay up fro m a 10t h-place s pot in just
two laps.
Jac kson led th e way in m ot o two,
with Begue in second and Lowry third.
Lemo inewas in eighth at the star t of lap
tw o, b u t h e wo rke d h is w ay into th e
number-two spo t by the end of the next
lap . In the meantime, Lowry had already
passed Begue for seco nd , but Lemoine
passed him jus t short of the finish-line
jump before th e white fla g ca me out.
Jackson took the win, Lemo ine was second, and Lowry held on to third. Begue
was fourth and Stark fifth.

N ovice 'gat e in to the first tu rns , chased
by Miles Keeney. Keeney took over the
lead by the end of the first lap , with Jeff
Mi lliga n a n d A la n Tr amm ell in hi s
w ake, w h ic h p u she d H orn b a ck to
fou rth. Milligan go t around Keeney on
the seco nd lap and never loo ked back
on his way to the checkered flag. Trammell followed in second a t th e finish
lin e, with Mark Chrisman th ird a nd
Earn ie Mode four th .
Terry Dike stole the holesh ot in the
second rnoto, but Chrisma n took over the
lead on the first lap , chased by Don nie
Holcomb and Jason Draycott, se nd ing
Dike back to fourth. Trammell gated sixth
but used the second lap to ca tch up to
Holcomb and pass him for the nu mbertwo position. Ferrel Fooshee gated behind
Tra mmell off the start, following him as
they passed ride r upon rider to finish the
second lap in third , which pushed Holcomb back to fourth. Milligan, who gated
13th, had an amazing ride, as he used the
next three laps to move up to fourth by
the time the checkered flag came out.
