hilldimb, riding his CRSOO in the 600cc class . H is
4.21J9-second run in the first round set the ear ly
fas t time , but "Lightning Lane" Schultz carded a
4.19D-St..-'COnd tim e in th e Pushrod. cla ss to tak e
the fast time into intermission , Fortner respond-·
ed in seco nd -round action, however, with a bl istering 4.081-secon d run to pu t the damps on the
class w in, a lso na iling th e Fa st T im e trophy .
Fortner actua lly needed the quick ru n to take the
class ",'in, as Mar k Goodman Jr. ha d delivered a
4.107-second ru n on his Honda to bri efly sit on
the Fast Tim e bubb le. Doug Campbe ll was thir d
with a 4.320-second ti me on his KXSOO, with
Kaleb No rthrup and Kelly Brad y filling in the
to p five s po ts on their CRSOOs.

on his Yamaha twin in the 750cc class . His 4.235seco nd firs t-ro und time was good enough to win
the class, but he turned an even qu icker 4.116second tim e o n his second run, tryi ng to reta ke
the Fast Time trophy. Fortne r took second place

Joh n H illard and his tr ipl e in thi rd w ith 4.720
seco nds . Mark Bro w n a nd Do u g Lew in , both
rid ing Yamaha tw ins, finished fourt h an d fifth.
In O pe n-class ac tion, Kaleb No rthru p too k
the first -round lead wi th a 4.230-secon d tim e on
his 800cc Triumph , but Schultz go t aro und him
in the seco nd rou nd with a 4.128-second time on
his No rto n 850 for the wi n. Scott Sheets finis hed
third .
Sch ultz too k his third wi n in the Pushrod
class wi th a 4.190-second first-round ride on his
s no rt in ' No r ton, ju st a b i t qu ic ke r tha n
Nort hru p, w ho tu rned 4.256 seconds. Bob FISher
bro ug ht his Harl ey in third in 4.334 seconds .
No rt h ru p di d pick u p a win in th e Stock
class. Rid ing his YZ250, Northrup topped the
hill in a very good 4.399 seconds for the win ,
with Richard Allen cardi ng 4.481 seconds on his
CR250 for second. To m Brown, Doug Campbell
and Richard Vaug hn filled out the top five.
Gayle Jen kins returned to the winner's circle
with a convincing 4.428-secon d winning ride in
th e Senior class, well ahead of second-placed
Dwight Cu rra n. Bob FISher, Kevin Weaver and
Mark Goodman Sr. clai med the next three spo ts.

Danny Gonza lez and Shawn Ha yes too k turns in
the winner's circle, each of them pos tin g a win
in his respective mini cycle d ivision during Sa turd ay Nig ht Motocross a t Sla rwest Cycle Park.
Dann y Gonza lez, 9, scored his first -ever 80cc (711) class win; Hayes cam e ba ck to sco re the 60cc
(9-11) class vict ory later in the evening .
For Gonzalez, the wi n ove r Ha yes was perhaps his mos t memorable.
'This is only my second time racing a n 80cc
bike I lov e racing it !" enthused Gonzalez. " 1
reall y d on ' t like racing bO bikes too much an yoc
more, since I am almost 100 pounds."
Ha yes found his red em p tio n by turnin g a
pair of holeshots into two rnoto wins aboard his
flam ing-orange KTM 65cc m a ch i ne . Hayes
topped the eve r-im p rovin g Chapman Fiene and
Gonzalez, who cra shed ha rd over the Whit e

In motorcycle action, Novice racer Nik Hensley and In te rme d ia te Ra n d y C la rk b a t tle d
thro ug ho ut bo th motos of competition. Hensley
chased down and passed Clark in moto one, but
Cla rk had the last wo rd , hold ing off Hensley for
the len gth of the second m oto. Bill Wall s was
fast all night a nd fini sh ed th ird overall , w hile
An dre Lo pe z topped Bra n d o n Pra hm in the
Beginner ranks.

Padelford wheels to the win

At the last District 23 points-pa yin g ev en t of
1999, Eric Padelford wa s the winner in the 16-24
A class, taking the ov erall \-\ith a 3-1 moto score
'
after a three-way tie fo r the ove ra ll between
himself, Bryan Krem er and Mike Eve nson was
d eci ded by Padelfo rd "s second-m oto victo ry .
Padelford recent ly returned after a midscason
injury, and it was Evenson's first race back since
he sustained some se rious injuries at the Minneapolis Supercross last spring . Kremer has not
raced a grea t deal thi s year, but he still found
glory (and cash) awaiting him in the 125 A class,
as h e took th e w in ov er new A rider N at e
Broughton. Some 433 entrants mad e it o ut for
the Labo r Dav event .
At the start of the first 16-24 A mo to, Even so n absconded with the hcl eshot on his CR250.
Evenso n led the A field for two laps until Kremer made the pass that would tak e him to the
moto victory. Evenson held off a hard-pressuring Padelford at the finish. Jon Sprague took
fourth, foll owed by Jay Scherbring and Jonny
Mold.
The second moto started ou t wi th Padelford
gra bbing a holeshot dreams are made of - about
t h ree b ik e le ngths. Evenson, Kr emer a nd
Sp rague were all th er e - so close that any one of
the top fou r could stea l the moto - but Pad elford
too k the chec kers wi th a nns waving in joy, as he
also claimed th e overa ll. Evenson took ano ther
seco nd , with Krem er th ird , The fourth through
sixth spots were a repea t of mo to one: Sprag ue ,
Scherbring and Mold .
Th e O pen Mini (10-15) class was once aga in
a showcase of fast riders, as 25 of them lined the
ga te. In moto one, Joe Ettesvold was the first to
co mer nu mber one, in front of Scott Ehlenfeldt.
It took Ehlenfe ld t until th e second lap to pa ss
Ettesvold, but once in the lead , Ehlenfeld t held
on to t he finish. Ettesv old took a close seco nd ,
followed by Tony Traxler a few seconds back in
third . Tyler Neese was fourth an d Jeremy Gira rd
fifth .
In mo ta two, Ettesvold na iled the holeshot
aga in, this time wi th Joh n DeOt is in seco nd, Jad e
Du ngey th ird and Ehlen feld t fourt h. Ehlenfeld t
mov ed u p to challenge for the lead , o nly to go
down tryi ng . Ettesvold the n cruised in for an
easy moto win a nd the overall victory. DeOtis
ma de up for a first-mote 14th toclaim second,
with Ehlenfeldt mo vin g back into third , passing
rid ers up u ntil th e checke rs. Neese was again
fourth, wi th Spencer Dally fifth.

Venegas sha red the spo tligh t Sa tu rday night at
Costa Mesa Speedwa y. Faria won th e Scra tc h
mai n event, w hile Venegas wo n the Ha ndicap
mai n in front of a packed grandsta nd .

Andy "The Enforcer" No rthru p were o n th ei r
way to the main , and Far ia and Chris Man chester wo u ld have one more sho t in th e last-chan ce
qualifi er.
Th e second Scra tch se mi had Gary Hicks and
Shawn McConn ell headed for the main. Bobby
"Booga loo" Schwartz an d Brad Oxley were on
their way to the LCQ.
In the LCQ, Schwartz lined up o n the pole,
with Ox ley in two. On the o u tside were M anchester an d Faria . Schwartz rut the bes t ga te, but
Faria fired out of four an d took the lead as they
h it the fi rst turn . Ox ley, dow n o n the p ole ,
moved to second, bu t Faria wo uld be the final
ma n in the Scratch main,
For the Scratch main, Faria drew the po le for
the first time a ll night. Northrup was in two,
with McCo nnell in three. The outsi de slots ha d
Venegas in four and Hicks in five, Venegas got
the gate and led for one lap before Faria d ialed it
up a notch an d took the lead with tw o laps to
go . Faria proceeded to ru n away from the rest of
the field and Venegas was on the gas, tryin g to
catch up. The real war was for third, and it was
a battl e roya l between McConnell. No rthrup and
Hicks. When th e d u st had settled, McConnell
had the show money. The ric hes t race o f the
night be longed tn Faria.
In the first Hand icap semi, Du kie Erm olenko
came from the 4Q-.ya rd line to overtake Robbie
Sa ue r on the w hite-flag lap a nd ta ke th e win.
Transferring to the ma in with him we re Sauer,

The second Hand icap sem i was all "Fast" Ed
Cas tro. He came flying from the 40 an d took the
lon g wa y aro und and still ca me up with the lead
a t th e end of one, Cas tro moved to th e main,
alo ng with Jim Estes, McConnell an d Joh n "Boy"
Aden. Faria missed making the cut by the wid th
of a tire .
The lineu p for the Hand icap main had Sauer
alone on the 10. Ermolenko, Manchester a nd
Castro shared the 40. The 50 had Venegas and
Aden, and McConnell wa s on th e 60. The first
try at a go ca ug h t Ca stro roll ing, and he was
sent to dO\..i ltown Costa Mesa for the start. Th e
