Willow Springs International Raceway Graves unearths a win By ERIC VINCENT ....OIilIDR:" Chat ity, classified as Tax fdenIifkaIion Nun1ber • 33-0269409 For acIdiIionaI information, please call: (714) 751-7433. Graves grabbed the holeshot on his Michelin-shod Yamaha R1, followed by defending Formula One GP class champion Curtis Adams, with Bryan Kovarick initially in third. As these riders neared the end of the first of J 2 laps, Vincent Haskovec drafted and passed Kovarick down the front straight and moved into third. A lap later, Haskovec used the same technique to get past Adams and up into second. Midway through lap seven, both Kovarick and Jeff Short found themselves all over Adams' rear tire and, as lap eight got under way, Short powered past Adams through tum one. Adams and Short exchanged the thirdplace spot a number of times. At the start of the final lap, Short was ahead of Adams, who was looking for any opening to get back into third. He found it on the back straight, where he drafted and then pulled alongside Short in the long tum·eight sweeper. Adams dived into the inside of tum nine and was out ahead of Short as they neared the line. Short attempted to use the draft, but he ended up finishing in fourth, behind Graves, Haskovec and Adams. Adams was riding a new motorcycle in the event. For the start of the WSMC season, he switched from a Suzuki GSX- R 1100 to a Yamaha R I, and he was still working on getting it set up properly. "It's all a bit of a shot in the dark right now," he said. "We're just trying to make it better each time out." In the GMD Computrack LA 600cc Super Stock race, Graves was again the first racer off the line, but he was quickly caught and passed by Jeremy Toye on his Lee's Cycle-sponsored Yamaha R6. At the end of the first of six laps, Graves and Toye were side by side going down the front straight, as were Daniel Dietrich and Bryce Gross, who were battling for third. Midway through lap three, Dietrich faded a bit back to fourth, but a three-rider battle developed between Graves, Toye and Gross for the lead. Coming out of tum four, Toye reemerged with the lead, with Graves in second. All three racers continued to battle for the lead, with Graves and Toye exchanging places several times, as the riders used every trick they knew to try to best the other. On lap five, Graves was in the lead going through turn two and Gross powered past Toye in the back straight. But Toye came right back, and he moved back into second on the front straight to start the white-flag lap. Rounding tum four, Toye moved past Graves and into the lead. Coming out of tum n'ine, the three riders were once again side by side. At the line, Toye just barely edged out Gross to take the win. leaving Graves in third.
