Glen Helen Raceway Park Morrison slams the doors By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 15 Frank and Myra Thompson of Racing Enterprises Motorsports kicked off their 14th year of promoting motocross in Southern California (and their third straight at Glen Helen) with a popular new track layout that featured a com M pletely revamped infield section. CR250mounted Rodney Morrison took a liking to the natural-terrain. Old World-style course. as he slammed the doors shut on his competitors in both Vet Intermediate motos en route to the overall class honors. In the first moto. Morrison snatched the holeshot. Stephen Watson stuck his KX250 into second. while Bob Johnson rode third. After the first lap, Mike Horton was fourth and Gary Harada was fifth. Morrison immediately put a gap on Watson and opened up a twoMsecond lead by lap three. Watson. in tum, was able to put about a second between himself and Johnson. YZ400F pilot Sam Ramirez gated terribly, but by halfway he was up to fifth. Ramirez and Horton quickly caught Johnson, and the battle for third became a threeMrider affair. For most of the second half of the moto, Johnson held third, but Horton finally got around him in the back section. Ramirez followed suit. going around Johnson on the next lap for fourth. Meanwhile. out front, Morrison held a 1O~ second lead. Watson rode all alone in second. Just as the white flag came out, Ramirez pushed past Horton for third. At the checkers, Morrison took the moto win comfortably. Watson came in second. while Ramirez loped across in third. Horton claimed fourth, and Johnson was fifth. In the second moto, Morrison shot out to a three-bike-Iength lead by the time the pack had gone halfway down the start straight. He made no errors negotiating the first tum and took a nice holeshot. Ramirez ran second. Fred Nichols, in his first race back since an injury, had his YZ250 in third. Watson held fourth. Yamaha rider Brian Allen rode in fifth at the end of the first lap. By lap two, Morrison enjoyed a fourMsec M and margin on Ramirez in second. Watson moved up to third on lap three, while YZ125 rider Phil Rourke took over fifth on the same lap. Horton lurked in sixth. while Johnson was coming from the clouds after a first-lap bobble put him way back in the pack. Out front, Morrison checked out. Just past halfway, Horton moved up to fifth, and then he found a way around Nichols for fourth. With two laps to go, Horton passed Watson for third, and on the white-nag lap he used lapped traffic to his advantage and slid around Ramirez for second. When the check M ered flag flew, it was Morrison taking another moto win in convincing fashion. Horton finished up his strong ride in second. while Ramirez settled for third. Watson was fourth, and a late-charging Johnson claimed fifth. The overall honors on the day went to Morri M son by virtue of his perfect 1M finishes.
