SALEM, OR, JAN. 8
Honda·mounted Mike Storm, the winningest
rider this season in the 125cc Pro class during
CMC-sanctioned arenacross at the Oregon
State Fairgrounds' Exposition Arena, continued his winning streak with a double moto
125cc Pro victory.
Fast-starting Suzuki rider Keith Kadell
jumped out in front of the first combined
1250c Pro/Intermediate contests, and for several I~ps he held down the point position, until
Storm carved through traffic to catch and then
displace the impressive Intermediate rider at
the midway point. Kadell held on to the number-two spot, behind the top Pro, Storm, but
ahead of another Pro, Washington's Russell
Chace, and Intermediates Tyson Blood and
Matt Williams.
Kadell was fastest out of the chute in the
second contest, but it took a little over a lap of
the whooped-out course before Storm nabbed
the lead from Kadell's grasp. Storm, riding the
Hillsboro Motorcycles/SMP/FMF-backed CR,
opened up a tidy lead, which he maintained to
the finish for the overall Pro win, ahead of
overall Intermediate winner Kadell and Chace.
the second-placed Pro. Williams got the nod
for runner-up in the Intermediate class, ahead
of the Suzuki-mounted Blood.
Yamaha rider Ryan Leach dominated the
first 250cc Pro/Intermediate-class moto, leading Salem's Ryan Hageman and Washington's
Chace from start to finish, while Intermediate
riders Bryan Clevenger and Williams rounded
out the top five. Leach's overall win was in
jeopardy in moto two, though, as the Herb's
Cycletown-supported rider fell while leading;
this allowed local Honda rider Hageman to
lead for much of the race until he, too, slid
out.
This greatly tightened the race for the lead,
as Hageman, who quickly remounted, soon
had both Chace and Leach riding his rear
fender. As Hageman began to tire late in the
moto, Leach nipped by both Hageman and
Chace to take the lead with two laps remaining to seal his 1- J victory, ahead of Hageman
(2-2) and Chace (3-3). Williams came out on
top of the combined Intermediate-class moto
to take an overall win (2-1) ahead of Honda
rider Clevenger.
The largest rider numbers came in the
125 and 250cc Beginner classes, both of
which sported two divisions. Kawasakimounted Sean Light. a 250cc first-timer
indoors, scored a double mota win in Division One in 250cc action, putting huge
ground on Suzuki rider Craig Firkins, the second-placed finisher (2-2), and Jeff Phillips
(4-3) in the 14-rider field. YZ pilot Joe Wyatt,
who maintained the longest win streak in the
class this season, won Division Two with 1-2
finishes, topping Curtis Waibel (2-3) and Eric
Turk (4-4).
Another of the contingent of out-of-area
riders, Ryan Villopoto, posted a pair of victories in small-displacement action, scoring the
60cc Senior and Supermini-class wins. ViIlopoto held off Ryan Huege, who the night
prior was a two-class winner, for the Supermini-class win. Villopoto then finalized his tally
with a 60cc Senior win, ahead of KTM rider
Jacob Kannada and Travis McClinton.
