1999 GFI/Dave Coupe Winter MX Special Scott Davis (85) leads Jesse Ketcham (36) and the rest of the pack at the GFllDave Coupe W1nterMX Special, held at the E Street Bridge track In Marysville, Callfomla. Bv JIM AND VALERIE ENOS /ilARYSVIU.E, CA, DEC. 5 esse Ketcham and Scott Davis gave the spectators four suspense-filled motos as each of them claimed an overall win in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at the GFI/Dave C~Jpe Winter MX Special. Ketcham, sponsored by DH Cycles, Thor, FMF and Pro Action, took the 250cc-c1ass win, while Davis, backed by O'Neal, No Toil, Sunstar and FMF, fended off Ketcham for the 125cc-c1ass win. The two riders simply went toe to toe in both classes and kept the crowd guessing as to who would win as they mirrored each other most of the time. Davis ran into some bad luck in the 125cc and 250cc motos, going down in the same spot, and to make matters more frustrating, it happened on the white-flag lap in each moto. Fortunately, in the 125cc moto, he was able to get up and going just ahead of Ketcham for the win; however, the fall in the 250cc moto cost him the overall on the day. "That turn just killed me today: said Davis. "When I saw the white flag, I said to myself, 'It's either do or die.' I just can't believe I went down both times in the exact same spot." Ketcham, on the other hand, rode four strong motos, and even though Davis won both 125cc motos, Ketcham was a threat at all times. "I found some good lines out there and just neve,r gave up," Ketcham said. "A sand track like this is a little tricky on a 125, because you've got to keep your momentum going all the time. The 250 is definitely a lot easier to ride on this track." Coupe, who contested the Supercross and Nationals aboard a factorybacked Maico in the early 1980s, is in his fifth year of promoting races at the seldom-used E Street Bridge track. This event drew more than 500 riders on the day. 30 JANUARY 12, 2000' c u e I _ "I'm the only one who runs out here, and I put on only two races a year: said Coupe. "I think the sand brings 'em out, and the fact that, although this track is here year 'round, it only gets prepped this nice twice a year. The Azevedos - Jack and Corky of AMP Racing - did the track prep and brought out their Sign-up and scoring crew. Everything went very well today, and lowe them a big thanks. In March, I'm shooting for a $10,000 Pro purse at my other race here, the Dave Coupe Classic." The 125cc Pros took to the big sandbox first, and Mike Mason from Minden, Nevada, led early on, followed by Davis, Jerrod Fisher, Craig Truglio and Husqvarna-mounted Dennis Stapleton. Ketcham had a less-than-stellar start but quickly made his way to the front of the pack. With Davis quickly displacing Mason, it appeared that Davis would run away with the win. However, with Ketcham closing in, Davis went down in a quick right-hander just after the finish-line jump. The fall came just after the white flag had waved, and Davis desperately scrambled to remount. Ketcham came over the finish-line jump just as Davis was taking off. However, Davis managed to keep Ketcham behind him, eventually taking the win. Mason followed Ketcham across for third, while Fisher and Cliff Cook rounded out the top five. "I almost gave it away, but I kept the bike running when I went down," Davis said. "I missed the rut and the back end just went away. As I was getting up, I could hear Jesse coming, and I got going just in time." "Yeah, I saw him taking off just as I came over the jump, and I thought for sure I would get him," said Ketcham. "But he didn't Jet off and I couldn't get a wheel in on him." In moto two, Davis got out in front of Ketcham, and this time Mason and Fisher tagged along close behind. Davis and Ketcham swapped positions several n __ s times. On the white-flag lap, Ketcham was leading, but a bobble in one of the tums was all Davis needed to make his way past Ketcham for the win. During the intermission, two $100 Four-Stroke/Mini races took place. John Moore, a Northem California Vet rider who has an immense passion for the sport, put up the money, and Calvin Andlovec and Ben Weisenberg took the wins. Andlovec promptly announced that he was donating the winnings to fellow racer Donovan Mitchell. Newly signed with KTM to contest the Supercross and Nationals, Mitchell was badly injured recently in a race in Southem California. The 250cc Pro motos belonged to Ketcham and Davis once again, and lead changes between the two were again abundant. Ketcham made the least amount of mistakes, and in the end that made the difference, as his 1-1 score took the overall. Davis, who once again went down in the second moto on the white-flag lap, held on for second. Mason posted two solid third-place finishes for a lock on third. In fact, Mason was gaining ground on Davis in the second moto, but a few bobbles here and there took their toll. Daniel Blair, aboard a Mach 1 Motorsports-backed Honda, nailed down fourth with a 4-5 score, while fifth went to Cook. "It [the tight battle] was great out there, and I think the crowd enjoyed the race: said Ketcham. "It was a little closer than I prefer, but what do you expect? I would rather win by half a lap." "Jesse rode good out there, and it was a day of good, clean racing," Davis said. "When I quit making mistakes, I was on, but that fall in the last moto did me in." eN EStrMt Irid..
