AMA Victory Sports Indoor MX Winter Series, Rounds 3 & 4 Halfway through the 12-lap race, Neese managed to pull up beside Chester in the whoops, and he waited until the last millisecond to brake for the right turn. From then until the checkered flag, Neese held on to third. Horton also made it around Chester for fourth, leaving the Suzuki of Gastonia rider to complete the top five. In the 250cc A main, Povolny pulled the surprise holeshot, with Neese, Welch, Chester and Shue all over him. Full of vinegar from his good finish in 125cc A, Neese pressured and then leaned on Povolny until the Minnesota rider yielded two-thirds of the way through the race. But Povolny was determined to take back the lead, and he might have done so if a last-lap spinout hadn't foiled his plan. Neese took the checkered flag unhindered in the last few tums. "I saw that the rest of them were. taking pretty much the same lines," said Neese of his success in passing through the turn following the finish line. "I kinda had to switch up and try something else." Chester and Shue teamed up to challenge Welch in third, putting him back to fifth on lap seven. Welch tussled with Justus and Yamaha-mounted Charlie Dunaway of Lucasville, Ohio, for the rest of the race. Welch regained fifth by the finish, with Dunaway close at hand. "I didn't get a great start but ended up following Chester about halfway down - stuck with him and we came up through the pack," said the third-place finisher, Shue. "We followed Neese and Povolny, watching them and hoping they both were gonna go down. Third's not bad with these fast guys. " The runner-up, Chester - the oldest rider present - is still a tough competitor. "I train real hard," he explained, "ride a lot of motos during the week. Tonight, things started going my way, and we ended up in second place. With 10 good riders in a good, tight track like this, you'll see some rubbin'." In a ragged start that was almost a do-over, Shue got hung up in Saturday's 14-lap 125cc A main gate, and Welch crashed on the way to turn one. Out of the confusion, Horton came up with the holeshot and held off a determined Gibson until the checkered flag. In their qualifier, the outcome had been different for Shue and Horton. While Shue had taken the holeshot and led the entire six laps, Horton had gone down on the start. By BARBARA WILLIAMS PHOTO BY LOREN WILLIAMS WILLIAMSTON, NC, DEC. 10-11 acked by Triad Powers ports, Jim Neese of Greensboro North Carolina, was the big winner a~ the Senator Bob Martin Agricultural Center in Williamston, North Carolina, the site of rounds three and four of the AMA Victory Sports Indoor Motocross Winter Series. Neese won both 250cc A contests and placed third both nights in 125cc A competition, over a number of entries of ProAm riders large enough to force multiple qualifiers. At the end of Saturday night, Neese banked at least $1600. Pro-Am riders came from as far away as Wisconsin to chase the AMA Pro-Am points that will count toward their national number qualifications for the coming 2000 season. Aside from Neese, the two most consistent A-class riders were F&S Suzuki/Banzai's Matt Shue and Klamfoth Racing/Fast BoysjRenthal's Jeff Gibson. Shue notched a win, two thirds and an eighth, for $11 OO-plus, to Gibson's three second-place finishes and an eighth. Gibson also won Saturday night's AJI-American Jumping Contest with an awesome heel-clicker, adding $150 to his race winnings. In Friday's 125cc A main event, qualifier-two winner Shue was the first to turn one, the first to complete lap one, and the first to the checkered flag, riding a flawless, fast race. Thornville, Ohio, privateer Gibson stuck close, drafting on Shue's speed to pull away a slight distance from the rest of the pack. "Matt pulled the holeshot, and he was flyin'," said Gibson. "I'd just gotten off the YZ400 from the 250cc qualifier, and it's a big switch to go back and forth between that and the 125, so I wasn't quite in rhythm early enough." Shue has been strong so far in the Indoor Winter Series, coming off three wins two weeks ago. Jim Chester gated well, in third, just ahead of Triad Powersports' Jim Neese, Dal-Kawa Suzuki's Paul Justus, James Povolny Jr. of Minnesota, and Primal Impulse Suzuki's Robbie Horton. Owing to a first-turn tangle of several bikes in the qualifier, Horton had made it to the main via the 125cc B consi. Though Chester would have preferred going after the lead pair without distraction, his bar-banging battle with Neese was just what the Suzuki rider likes. 4 JANUARY 12, 2000' c u e • e neVIl's Jim Neese (6) took command of the 250cc A class at rounds three and four of the AMA Victory Sports Indoor MX Winter Series, held at the Senator Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center in Williamston, North Carolina. Chester, Kevin Wilson and Neese gated third through fifth, and after a lap Neese had gotten around Wilson to work on Chester. Neese made his pass with only four laps to go, and he was able to use a lapped rider or two to slow Chester's pursuit. Neese finished third, with Chester fourth. Dunaway crossed the finish line in fifth. Gibson jumped to the front on the 250cc A main-event start but was quickly replaced by Neese, who was virtually untouchable and took a convincing win. As in the earlier Pro event, Gibson stuck tight to the leader and finished a strong second. Shue was unhampered by the gate this time and he started in fourth, just behind Povolny. After the first lap, Shue passed the Minnesota rider to take over third. Try as he might, though, Shue could not force another opening, and he rode in third for the remaining 13 laps. At one point in their duel, Shue caught a faceful of roost from Gibson's big YZ400, and his goggles were torn off. For the rest of the race, Shue had to duck his head to avoid being blinded by the dirt. "That's' half the reason I've got this big bike," joked Gibson. Neese was pumped by his back-toback 250cc A wins. "This weekend, everything seems to have fallen into place," Neese said. "Before, I've crashed or gotten hurt or something has happened to the bike, but these races have gone very well." eN Senator Bob Martin Eastern AgriculbJral Center Williamston, North Carolina Results: December 10-11, 1999 Friday 50 SHAFT: I.
