Keen ey clobbered the competition in th e co m bined 80cc age-group classes, picking up the wi n in the 9- to I l -yearold d ivision . Springsteen was the winn er of th e Bef ore The Hill and 250cc Intermediate classes . The day' s top Professional performer was Mike Corder. Yamaha-mounted Eric Nye won the first combined SOcc moto, which included riders from 9 to 16, but his moto victory came by vi rt ue of the mi sfortune that befell the diminutive Keeney, who was well on his wa y to a victory when he cra sh ed after tangling with lapped rid ers, while N ye rod e on to victory. Keene y did, however, remount in time to salvage a win in the 9-11 class, trailing the 14-16-elass winner, Nye, but finish ing ahead of a large field of heavy hitters, led by Kenny Webster, the wi nner of the 12-13 class . In m o t o tw o , H ond a -mount ed Keeney motor ed to the head of the field, chased by Nye, Da vid Rose, Webst er, Ryan Villo po to, Tyler Fick and Was hing to n's Lars Trulson Jr . CI> til 48 J ason Petersen picked up a win In the 125cc Beginner class at the second round of the CMC Trans-Cal Pacific Northwest Series , held at Albany Motorsports Park In Oregon. wa s also a n ove ra ll winn er, posting a win in the 12- to 13-year-old d ivision . Dean Johnson sought a nd receiv ed revenge for a loss at the previous round in the Over 40 Pro class, beating Washington ' s Ted DeVo l in both outings. DeVol finished with a 2-2 tally, although he rod e in Jo hnson' s s ha d ow for the majority of bo th motos. Husaberg rider Tim SuIlivan nabbed the final spo t on the rost ru m with his 3-3 consi stency to lead Honda-mo unted Mitch Kirkpatrick and Yamaha rider Jim Parks into the top five. In th e co mbined Ov er 40 Am ateur class, Dave Shepard scored a convincing win in mota tw o, one whi ch would relega te th e fi rst-moto w inne r , Ron Will iams , to s e co n d overa ll. Corder had tou gh competition from a pair of In term ed iate rid er s in hi s 125 and 250cc Pro-class wins. Springsteen was not far off Corder 's pace for much of the first 250cc Pro / Intermed iate-elass moto. While Spri ngs tee n e ventually faded to so me six s e co n ds behind Corder, he did put conside rab le ground o n Ca lifo rn ia n Eva n Lau gh rid ge, J.R. Vielle, Ryan Metzl er and Mike Smith . Sp ringsteen also initially challenged Co rde r at the d rop of the ga te in mot o two, bu t thi s tim e Co rder checked out on the com petition, again leaving a large gap between himself and the impressive Spri ngsteen, who in turn put gro u nd between himself an d Laughridge, who was th e 'secon d -p la ce fini sher in th e Interm ed iate class, a hea d of Metzler, who finis hed third after making a last lap pass on Vielle. "I took the ou tside line goi ng into the last turn and I go t pinched off," Vielle said . "It was a good, close race." Vielle (3-4) finished fourth, followed by Yamaha YZ400F-mounted Nick Fois. ter (6-5). After Springsteen's dem ise, Ya ma ha rider Mike Schee l took con trol, only to lose out to both Laughridge and Ryan Metzler , who a ll trail ed Corder to the finish by a large margin. Corder fina lized his two-class sweep wit h a wi n in mo to two , leading Sp ringsteen to the lin e. Sp ringstee n, tho ugh, lost ou t in his bid for three overall wi ns, as his first-mote fourth-p lace finish only garn ered him second overall , behind the impres sive Laughridge bu t ahead of Metzler, Smith and Raym Conkey. Yamaha -m ount ed Ja son Peters en scored a convincing win in moto two of the 125cc Beginner class , en abling him to tak e the overall win ah ead of fellow YZ pilot Lucas Buyas an'! the winner of the fir st moto, Ryan Thompson. SCR/Yamaha rider Steve Leivan p ut the lock on the series title by pulling away in the late stages of round 10, scoring his eighth win of the season and thus claimin g his seventh (a nd sixth consecu tive) series champion ship. "This yea r ha s been great," Leivan enthused after taking the checkered flag for th e 52nd time in hi s ca reer. "I' ve been on the podium every time and won a lot of races . A big thanks goes to my cr ew for all their help, to Yamaha for building a gr ea t bike, and to my sponsors, who make it possible." Lake Creek played host to rou nd 10 of the 14-event series. The night prior to . the race, a th und erstorm dumped 1 1/2 inches of rain on the 9.5-mile co u rse, though the trail was in perfect condition by track time. Lap times we re just over 26 minu tes for the leaders, resulting in a five-lap, two-hour-a nd- 10-minute ride for Leiva n. Mike Wi nd ma n n e njoyed hi s fir st holeshot of the seaso n, wit h Leivan ge ttin g an un characteristically good start in second. Ch ris Nesbi tt, in his firs t race back since suffering a broken foot, go t going in third but could n't maintain the pace of th e leading d uo a nd s tea dily d ropped back, sold ierin g on to finish 10th . Brandon Forrester moved throug h the AA class after dealing with a multiple-kick start. By the midway point of th e op e ning lap, he wa s up to third , right on Leivan's rear fender. At the conclusion of lap one, Windmann, Leivan a nd Forrester stormed through the scoring tent in tight formation, having already separated th emselves from the rest of the pack by mo re than a minu te. The top three remained a freight train for nearly fou r laps. Occasiona lly, one rider would bobble, allowing the other two to close the gap or pu ll away, although no passes took place for most of the event. Ha lfwa y through the fourth lap, Forrest er slipped by Leiva n in a creek section by taking a straighter (tho ug h we tter) line. Once around Leivan, Forrester put th e pressure on Windma nn, w ho held on ga mely for several miles before b e in g s lowed b y a la p per, w hich allowe d Forr ester to move past and take his first lead of the race. . Forrester took the white flag only a couple of bike leng ths ahead of Leivan 's thunderin g WR400. Wind mann was still close as well, in wha t was sha ping up to be a great battle to the finis h.
