Having missed both bi g s u m m e r Nati onals while rec ov er ing fr om a mishap ov er th e Fourth of Jul y, Kerr - along with 597 oth er entrants - sh owed up at Swan Cycle Park for the opening round of the fifth an nual Texas State Championship Series cocked , locked and loa d ed for racing. His bi ggest competition came from Bryan Zachary on a new mount. • 'The Kawa sakis were just too tall for Zach," said Bryan Zachary Sr. "When he threw his leg over that Suzuki and went on th e track at home to practice, it was like a whole new kid riding tha t bike!" It was like a page fro m th e history books when Kerr and Zachary stormed off the gates of the SOcc (12-13) and 80cc Open events. In the firs t 80cc (12-13) m ot o, Kerr rode a borrowed Yama ha since his bike wa s on th e in jured list . Bryan Zachary put his RMSO o ut front off the start, bUI Kerr was there at the finish line to take second. The tabl es tu rned in moto two, as Kerr grabbed th e early lead , with Z a ch ary at hi s rear wheel. Kerr a nd Zach ba ttled for fou r gru eling laps, with Kerr taking the chec kered flag first and the overall as well, with his 2-1 punch. Kerr commanded the 80cc Open contest. Kerr put so me dis tance on Zach on lap tw o , a s a go o d battle e ns ue d bet ween Jam es Pino and Erni e Philli ps. Phillips ga ted beh ind Scotty Wennerstro m off th e sta rt but found his mark o n lap two fo r four t h, beh ind Pino. Phillips passed Pino for third. Wen ne rstro m kept fifth . Kerr absconded with th e hol esh ot ag ain in moto two, this tim e chase d by John Lea . Zachary had tr ouble off th e start, but his determination helped him to the fastest lap times as he kicked in the afte rbu rn ers and w orked his wa v toward the front. In the mean tim e, Ke;r was gone, fini shing with a 19-second lead. Phillips chased Lea into lap three before taking over second . The final lap saw Pin o m ov e in o n Lea fo r t h ird , whil e Wennerst rom fi nished in fif th . Zac hary eve ntu ally worked his way to sixth, wh ich ga ve him fourth overall. Woolsey too k over th e lead in sho rt fas hion, but Reed stayed close to the lead er through out the entire mot o. Hale chased th e fro nt -ru nn ers in third , followed by ano ther rookie making h is deb ut, Ho n da of Ho us to n's Derek Gerdes. In m ot o two, Woo lsey grabbed th e Hale nabbed the holeshot in the seco nd m ot o a nd was badger ed by Reed for four laps before Reed shot by th e leader ove r th e triple jump just sho rt of th e white flag . As they flew over th e g ra ndstah d tabletop and throu gh the w hoops, Reed appeared to gain some g ro u nd , bu l both di sappea red on the d ownhill after the whoops, emerging with Hale ou t front. C hase's ba ck end sw ap ped ou t and he we nt d own in th e corne r. "I had to go off the tra ck to miss hitting him," said Ha le. "My bike d ied going int o the corne r a nd I went over th e bars when I hit a bump," said Reed . Boynton finished third, for third overall. Williams finished fourt h, followed by Bla ke Kee te n . Re ed s trugg led to ge t remo un ted to finish IGth, for fifth ove rall. Cha z Hollada y continued his winning strea k in th e 50cc (7-8) and 50cc Open eve n ts , a n d a lso fini sh ed a v ery resp ectabl e th ird ove rall in the 60cc race. Jami son Miller followed Holla d ay ou t of the firs t turn, bu t af te r the firs t .lap, Ho llad a y bega n to ex t end~is lea d o n th e p a ck . Derek Barath kept pace in third, while Kevin Falting he ld down fou rth , followed by ZebSmith. Holladay on ce again led th e charge off the gate in mot o two, this time followed by Rod o lfo Ferna ndez. Miller cha rged after Ferna ndez, o nce agai n followed b y Barath , w h ile Smi t h h eld d own fifth, followed by Falting . Drake Williams star ted the race in sev enth, bu t lo st hi s positio n d u ri ng lap two to Steven Williams. In 80cc (7-11) ac tio n, Ronnie Shaffer showed good spo rts ma nshi p. Off of the firs t- mo to s ta rt, both Sha ffe r a nd hi s budd v James Hinson Jr. went down in the second-turn bowl sweepe r. Shaffer got up, but when he turned around and saw Hinson trapped under his o w n bike, Shaffer dropped his mo u nt and ran ove r to free h is fri end before h e returned to his own d own ed rig to get back into th e race . Hin so n was jus t a little sha ke n . A huge tip of the helm et to Shaffer fo r put tin g hi s fell o w rid er ' s eN safety ahead of his ow n racing.
