But it was Steve "The Thrill" Hill posting the
win. G regory did wha t he had to do by finishing
just ahead of Ledin , wh o edged Richard
Waschek for third place. After the race, Gregory

"It keeps happening that way ," Gregory said,
"where I finish just ahead of Mike. I keep adding
a couple more points. It's going to be dose."
Gregory was lucky just to be racing after a terrible crash at Aitkin in which his Ho nda was virtually destroyed. Former vintage dirt track champ ion Jim Eastlee offered Gregory h is 500cc

Alessi conquers Carlsbad
By Kirk Chandler
CARLSBAD, CA, AUG. 21
Wi th the entire mini pac k in h is wa ke, Mik e
Alessi man hand led his 10< around the high80
speed Ca rls bad circ u it. Aless i w on both 80cc
Open mot es, though he was hounded all day by
CMXR's top mini p ilot, Zac Wray.
The first-mot e holeshot went to Alessi. He
wa s followed by Corey Gus tafson an d Ma teo
Saffe n. Wray was mired m id pack and was getting rea d justed to riding his 80 after just completing his first·cv er 125cc Novice mo to. Wray
sliced his way throu gh Sa ffon a nd G ustafson,
and th en set his sights un Alessi. A lE~ssi was railing, ove rjum ping the infield tabl etop by 30 feet
and ba rely sto ppi ng in time for the next hairpi n
comer. Wray was on a mission an d d id n' t wa nt
to be beaten on his ho me track, and he d idn' t
ca re who was in front of him. He put his head
down and mus cled his YZSO throu gh the roughes t lines an d dcplctt..-d Alessi's lead conside rab ly.
The two mini pilots left the crowd on its feet in
a mazeme nt. They were wide open through the
grandstand sweeper and on the ragged edge the
entire mota. Alessi wo n the moto, but the scc~
ond moto would be inte res ting if \ Vray could
muster a sta rt a nd not give Alessi a six-second
hea d start. Third in the mota w e n t to 80c e
Novice mota winner Corey Gustafson.
In the star t uf the second moto, AIt...-ssi slid
through the first turn first, "ith Wray in second,
and the fun began. For four lap s, the two riders
were withi n one second of eac h o ther, th ei r
sty les co nflicting in every way: Alessi was
smooth an d precise, Wray fast and ruthless. O n
a number of occasions , Wray cha rged u p the
ins ide an d sho wed a whee l to Alessi, but Alessi
wou ld cou nte r by hold ing it on loriger into the
infield table top . The white flag came out and it
looked like the race could go to either rider . The
leaders caught la pped tra ffic right in the infield
section. Alessi got around w hile Wray was left
ou t to dry . Aless i used this littl e ad va ntage to
pull his le ad on t he l ina l lap . An ex ha us ted
