He wasn' t the fastest rid er in qua lifying. And he may not have eve n been the fas tes t rid er in the race. But fittingl y, th e most d ominant rider in the 750cc Supersport Series ended his season wit h a victory. O n a wa rm a nd su n ny da y in Co lora do, the Chapa rra l Suz uki rider cul mina ted his championshi p-winning sea so n wit h a gu tsy perform anc e that saw him come out on to p of a scra p that last ed from green light to chec kered flag . Sta rting fro m the second row, Kip p go t away w it h one as he Clearly jum ped the start to get to the first comer in third place . No ha rm, no fou l, an d no stopa nd-go p en a lt y for Kip p , who d idn ' t waste mu ch tim e pu shi ng and shoving his way to the front of the pack. " I wa s creeping fo rwa rd and I' d watched all the starts tod ay, and usu ally they were about the same," Kipp sa id of his s tart. "This time it jus t d ragged on a nd on a nd on. I was ro lli ng forward and eve ntually I had to shu t off. I was conce rned . I thou gh t it might be a short race . I go t a goo d start. I' m not go ing to lie, it d efini tely helped, but it' s not like I go t to tu rn one ahea d of everybody else. My lap s were faster than wha t I'd qua lified, faster than wha t I'd p racticed - I felt I deserved to ru n u p fro n t. I don' t feel too bad abo u t it." But th e victory d idn 't come easily . Kipp wa s cons ta ntly hou nd ed by Ricci Motorsports' Jimmy Moore, until Moo re cra s hed on th e 21s t lap . Th en Kip p ' s team mate Dam on Buckmaster took over the chase an d he hou nd ed Kipp all the T w ay to th e finish, giving th e firs t-year team its first one-two finish of the season. . "I was tryi ng to make up for a cru mm y w eekend ," Kip p sa id. " I ha ven ' t b een go ing ve ry well o n tha t b ike a ll wee ke n d long . We we re s ta r ting t o ma ke so me head way on the se tu p, but Damon had a mu ch faster pa ce all weekend and I knew it wou ld be very diffi cu lt to beat h im tod a y . Once I go t a g o o d s t a r t, I fe lt th at as lo n g a s h e wasn ' t leading ... well, th a t was m y bigges t fear. All th ese guys were ru nni ng stro ng . Eve ryon e I wa s racing wit h w as fas ter th an m e in qu a lifyin g a nd faster than me in practice. I knew I had a g oo d bi ke se tu p . We mad e so me big cha nges and the very last time we went ou t it starte d feeling pretty goo d . I just rode really har d and really agg ress ively. I just did my best to be aggressive." . Buckmaster' s race also didn' t lack in difficu lt y. Despite s tarti ng fro m po le, Buckm aster m uffed the start and ended the firs t lap just insid e the top 10. He then we n t to work. Method icall y. The Australian took his time and knifed his way through the pack until he was finallyon the tail en d of the Moore and Kipp ba ttle. Then he just sat and watched, finally seeing Moo re throw it away. "He was kind of rid ing on the edge a little bit for the amo unt of laps we had to go . I was just kind of content to sit be hi nd and wa tch it for a little while. Tom wasn't making half the mist a kes that Jim m y Moore was ma king, and I thought th a t he migh t go down if he tried to keep tha t pace up. He wa s trying to shove it under Tom a few times an d I thou ght it was a risky move. I wa s just ha ppy to sit back and take away a few mo re laps because I need ed to cool m y tires. I wanted to ge t arou nd Jim my as quick as I could, bu t not go as hard as he was. Unf ortuna tely, he we n t d own . Tha t' s bad lu ck fo r hi m beca u se he' s been rid ing qui te well this yea r." From there , Bu ck ma s ter did a ll he cou ld to pass his teamma te, .bu t there wasn't anywhere to d o it. He settled for second pla ce. . "I haven't really go t any major complaints," Buckmas ter said . "I ma de a bit of a faux pas off th e line. I hol esh ott ed the last two races an d I really thou gh t I wou ld hol esh o t thi s o ne, a nd it was prob abl y t he m o st cru ci al one to holesh ot. Unfortu na tely, I d idn ' ~. I got s tuc k behind a few slower guys and it took a lot of energy and a lot of tire to d o th at , bu t fortunately I got aro u nd them before the end . I had to chase Tom d ow n and it was hard work. He' s the National Cham pion, so it' s not go ing to be easy. Tom rod e really good . I tried to d o it in a couple of com ers there, bu t I just d id n' t have it. "T ra ff ic wa s b ad ," Bu ck ma s te r ad d ed . "O n a 1.3-m il e tra ck, y ou' re going to have a lot of traffic. Espe cially in a Supersport class, where it' s quite a fu ll grid. It was tou g h. Tr yin g to get around those guys ~as difficult. There's only like tw o or thr ee co rne rs to d o it, and tha t's if yo u don't make a mis take try ing to ge t around them ." . Third ult imately we n t to 1-800-Cycle Gea r's Jak e Ze m ke, w ho wrapped up . seco nd in the title chase wi th the resu lt. In the end , Zemke go t the spo t - his seven th podium finish of the 11race season. "I got a grea t start off the line, and I think Tom (Kipp) was the first guy to go . by me goi ng down the back s tra ig ht away," Zemke said. "I kind of struggled ge tting my bike setup all weekend, and I think it s howed in the ra ce. To m a nd Damon were bot h ab le to pull away from me easily. It was a lon g race and there was a lot of attrition, a lot of guys going d own out the re. It's a really tight track and wit h 29 laps you've really got to keep your head abou t yo u - keep your wits about you. In a race that long, it's easy to lose your conce ntratio n, especia lly on a tra ck lik e thi s w he re yo u reall y don't have any time to rest. All in all, I'm really • happy wi th my season and this race. Six podi ums in a row - the on ly wa y I'd be any happier is if I'd have won one."
