Rosa was quickly up an d kicking the starter button to rejoin the field. Jeff John son too k the lea d in th e res tart, and thi s tim e Rosa wen t righ t alo ng in second, with Rya n Fisher an d Proiette in the lea d grou p. Fisher flew aro u nd th e ou tsi de of Rosa to p ull in behind Johnson. Th e ra ce would end quickly, as Fish er's bike began to puff smoke going into tum one jus t as he slid und er John so n fo r th e lea d . Down the back straig ht and into tum three, Fisher' s bike let go, shroud ing Johnson in oil smo ke and takin g both riders nearly to the wa ll. Fisher's rid e stop ped, a nd"Joh nson had no idea where he was going and slowed to a near stop, letting most of the field go by. Th is ha n d ed the lea d to a chargi ng Tho mpson, lead ing Petton's Wood- Rotax and Rosa on the big hog . Proi ette and Dupree were closin g on Rosa, wh o had his hands full getting the Jim Kelly-tuned twin around the Tem ecula oval. Dupree put on a cha rge, passin g both Proi ette a nd Rosa to s nag th ird . Pro iette also worked his way under Rosa for fourth. With the w hite flag out, it see med as if the finish ing order was set with Thompso n out front, bu t Petton came into tum three fast and high, squaring tum four ea rly, a nd w hi le Thompson was still turning he had his mach ine hooked up and d rove inside the twin to take the win by inches at the flag. Dupree, Rosa and Pr oi ette fil led o u t t he top five, wit h Richard Pollock, Dennis Briggs and Jeff Joh nson close beh ind . John Garcia and Steve Miller comp leted the top 10. Jeff Johnson broke out his trusty 650cc Triumph to take his win of the night in the Spo rtsman Vintage 750cc class, cru ising ou t in front of Sal Pelu so, also Tr iumph-powered , and Jim Rosa, now on a Norton. Roger Thompson , Steve Miller and Ch uck Claydon fell in behind. Denn is Bri gg s, ridi ng th e N olee n Racing proj ect YZ400, led the Vet class wire to wi re, a hea d of Richard Pollock. Jeff Johnson cha rged th rou gh the pa ck on th e Ron Woo d si ng le-s hoc k Wood Rot ax af ter a hea t-race miscue left him on the back row at the start. U he drou ght tha t had wes tern Virginia in its grip caused rather dus ty, dry cond itions for the 10th round of the EBC/KBC /Pro Art Works-sponsored Virgini a Cham pionship Hare Scra mbles Series. Almost 150 riders took off w hen the green flag went down. Man y riders thou ght that the 7-mile track was just as dusty as last year's. Front tires wou ld di g int o berms that -would just disint egrate into pure powder, leaving many rid er s on the gro und . On e creek crossi ng was followed by a pr etty rad ical little uphill. Riders makin g it up the most cha llengi ng line - a straight, 100-percent-vertical sho t - were a lways re w ard ed with hoo ts , howls and cheers from the ma ny spectators. On the final lap, almost every rider was making use of the many alterna te lines thro ug h that section . From the first lap, FMF/ White Brothe rs /Va lley Kawasaki r id e r Ste phen Edmondson and Mot or lm por ts-spon so red Kawasaki rid er Da niel Morrison were in a tight, fend er-to-fend er ra ce. Morrison held on to the lead for the first tw o l aps. Edmondson s ho t up the fast uphill lin e, passing Morrison after the cree k cross ing. Meanwhile, in third and also in the hunt for the lead was Casey Cycle City-ba cked Yamaha rid er Jason Gr eer. Morrison regained th e lead by the last lap but found himself.bog ged down by a lapped rider near the finish . Edmondson was ab le to take an ou tsid e line arou nd bo th and came through the barrels to tak e his thi rd consecu tive wi n of the seaso n. "I was having so me p roblem s with the d ust kic ked up by la pp ed rid er s," co m mented Ed mo ndson , who th en added, "Excep t, of course, that last guy." Morrison came in second and Greer finished thir d. Cycle Center-backed Kawasaki rider Wesley Mora n grabbed the holesh ot in the 250cc A class. ot letting tom ankle ligaments s lo w him down, Moto r Imports-spo nsored Kawasaki rider Tony Deal latched on to Mo ran 's rear fender in the ba ttle for first. "I wis hed we had walked that last section yesterd ay," said Moran. "There wer e two huge roots that st opped me dead. I saw Deal go right by me." Moran didn't let anything, roo ts or othe rw ise, slo w him down on th e las t lap. He caug ht Deal and too k the checkers at the finish line. Deal came in second , and Ho nd a rid e r Dav id As hl ey rode a nearly perfect race to tak e thi rd . The Four-St ro ke A class also saw p lent y o f t ig ht , h an dl e bar- b a n g in g acti on . Bru ce' s Sus pe nsion-spo nsored Yama ha rid er Gle n Holc omb took the ear ly lead, with O'Neal-backed Yama ha r id e r Er ic H ytinen clos ing th e ga p between the m . Holcomb an d Hy tine n swapped the lead back and forth . On the last lap, Hytinen was taking a tight turn arou nd a fallen tr ee whe n Holcomb dived und erneath the tree to ma ke the winning pass. Wit h no opportu nities to take back the lead, Hytinen came in sec- T ond . Yama ha rid er Jeff Solinger put in an excellent charge to take third . The Vet A class charged into th e woods as a hu ge cloud of brown dust mixed with b lurs of colorful p lastic. Mark IV Yamaha rider Montie O rr eme rged at the end of the first lap ahead of the pack, despite wearing goggles that ha d cracked to bi ts after being d u nked in industr ia l-s trength clea ner. Mo tor Impo rt s -spo ns ored Ka w a s a ki rider Dann y Morri son recovered from a last-place sta rt to give Orr a chase for the lead . Morrison passed O rr bu t got to a confusi ng spot on the trail a nd had to ask for d irections . O rr blew by Morrison as he was getti ng ba ck o n track . Orr ca rne throu gh th e finish in fir st , a nd Mor rison hung on to seco nd. KTM rid er Darryl Ca mpbell rod e a consistent race for third . It was a ba ck-and-forth race for th e Senior A class as well. KTM rider Robert Cox had a tig h t race with KTM rid er Robert Jones. Cox took the first position but then overs hot a turn. Jones controlled the lead for a while and then cras hed. The two swap ped the lead through out the race until Jones went over the handleba rs in a muddy gu lly , g iving Cox a cha nce to stre tch ou t ahead and take the win. Jones wr en ched his bike ou t of the mud before KTM rider Tim orris could overtake him for second . Cycleworld-sponsored Yamaha rid er Bryan Happle took a comma nd ing lead in the Su per m ini class. Second p lace belonged to Tim m y Cra ddock . Cl ose behi nd Crad dock in third was Kawasaki rider Mike Sharp. Kawa s aki ri de r Je s s ica Morrison d arted off the start to tak e the holesh ot. As Morrison w id ened th e marg i n be tw e en her and th e re st o f th e Wom en ' s. cl ass , C asey Cy cle Cit ybacked Honda rid er Heather Greer and Powersports-sponsor ed Kawasaki rider Chri stin e Blake were swapping second place back and fort h. Gr eer ov ershot a turn, allowing Blak e to scoo t by. Blake stop ped for a few brief seconds to check on he r so n, mi ni rider Preston Blake, wh o h a d b roken s o me toes . G reer ca ug ht Blake on a rutted downhill and took ov er second place. Blake made on e last pass as Greer sa t stalled out at the bo tto m of the hill to tak e second place.
