Th e 17-year- o ld Carso n Ci ty nati ve also finishe d a respectabl e fourth in the 250cc Pro contest. The 125cc Pro field featured quite a few roo kies, bu t the new rid ers trailed an old pro as the act ion began wit h longtime Nevada Pro racer Jon Nelson taki ng the earl y lead ahead of Northro p, Tiearnev , Aaron Burns, Bria n Fos ter, Chris Vend ley. Fredd ie Wiechers, Kenny Bell, Dennis Stapleton, [arrod Fisher and the rest. elson 's lead was short-lived, however, as Northrop was on fire, and by the second lap he had su rged into the lead , with Tieamey close behind . Meanwhile, Bums dispatched Nelson back to fou rth place, with Foster han ging tou gh in fifth. As th e top fiv e raced in o rd er and clicked off the laps, Stapleton was working his way toward the front , and by the ha lfway point he was brea thing down Foste r's neck . Staple ton banged bars with Fos ter befo re m a ki ng the pass. Then he wen t to work on a fad ing Nelson. A t the w hite flag , Sta p leto n was firmly in four th. O n the last lap, Wiechers mad e his move and passed Nels on to race in fifth place u ntil th e chec ke red flag. At the finish, it was Northro p crossing the line first, followed by Tiea mey. Burns, Stapleton and Wiechers. Vendley absconded with the ho leshot in the seco nd go-a rou nd , with Wiechers, Bell , Foster and Tiea rney in tow .
