The first in the seri es of eight National mai n events wa s the Se nior final. in w hich the popu lar Burres sa t on the po le posi ti on . Burres was te d litt le time by pu tt ing a ll 750cc of Triumph power to the g ro und, as he led Allen Morin vill e, Steve Lacey and James Coppage o n the first of the 14 circu ts. While Burres d id have initia l cha llen ges fro m Morinville's Honda, Burres had b y la p th ree checked o ut o n th e co m pe tit io n, lea ving Mo rinvill e well behind . Several laps lat er, thoug h, Morinvi lle' s Ho nd a wo u ld coas t to th e sidelin es, allow ing Lacey to m ove in to the position vacated by Morinvill e, where he'd finish, ahead of BSA-m ounled Co ppage. . Lega rra' s firs t of two mai n-ev ent victories ca me in the Classic Open final , one in which he rod e a 1967 Bulla co EI Bandito to vict ory after ge tti ng aro und the intital leader, BSA Gold Sta r-mounted Ron P red m ore .
