Ju st a fe w yea rs ago, both Hedden and his brother John wer e fixtur es on th e N a ti o na l circ ui t, but they a re less vi s ible these da ys. Hedden had s o me fan s at Sp rin g Cree k - his name was ca rv ed into th e hillside. Ju st und er 900 en tra nt s were g reeted with g rea t track co ndit ions fo r Amateur Day. Th e eve nt was also the third Donn y Schm it Memoria l race. Chi p Donaho of AMA Distric t 23 issued a $1000 check to the A p las tic An emia fun d , th e disease that took Donny's life. TIle tra ck wa s different th is weekend . The sand-wash w hoop sectio n was ex te nd ed and run int o th e m icro tra ck area , an d the so il itself seemed ra ther sand y and deep com pared to earlier th is yea r. A t the sta rt of the first 250cc A moto. Scott Ste inle wa s th e first of th e 33-rid er field to th e tu rn , with Da n Ma rcotte an d Rus ty Sorenson in the ne xt two spots. After the sand wash, however, Craig Schwarz led the pa ck, with Hedden second . Steinl e and Mar cott e were back a ro u nd 10th as sand master Ed d ie Ray jam med his YZ400 into third . After the firs t o f five laps, Ca na d ian Kim Houde, 43, ra n in second behin d Schwarz briefly, until Hedden passed him on the seco nd lap in the w hoo ps. Sch warz was desperat ely hanging on to th e lead , w ith Hedden all over him. Houde was third , followed by Mike Luoma. O n the third lap, Hedden took the lead as Schwa rz slipped back in the pack to even tua lly finish fifth . Luo ma m ad e a ch arge on the last cou p le of laps to finis h one second be hind Hedd en at the finish . Rav was a soli d third , followed by Houde, Schwarz, Kn s Roes sler and D.J. Kunkel. In the 12Sec A cI~lSS, Mark Moli tor nailed th e hol esh ot in fro n t o f th e 26- rid er field , followed clos ely by Tucker Hibbert, Jaso n Krischuk a nd former s ta te cha m p Pat Donaho . Th e top three were s till in pos ition a fter the sa nd wash , bu t Donaho, like many riders, got ea te n up in th e area and came ou t at the ba ck of the pa ck. Mo lltor and Hibbert had a battle for the lead as they wen t into the sand wash on lap two, and Hibbert emerg ed in th e lead when th ey came o u t. From th er e, Hibbe rt cru ised to th e vic tory in the one-mo tu ra ce w ith about a five-second cu shion. Moli to r easi ly took seco nd .
