Yamaha Cycle Cente r / Litz Racin g /Hammerhead 's Kevin Walker competed in th ree classes bu t on ly took the overall wi n in the Over 25 A class. H o w e v e r , Walker won th e hea rts of rid ers and spectators alike as he showed true spo rtsmanship in the seco nd 250cc A mota. In th e fir st 250cc A mota, Walker, Tesh , Jim Chester and Kevin Black were the only riders around turn one, as the rema ind er of th e class crash ed . Riddle was involved in the pileup. " A fte r r u n ni ng into (Jon ) Boruff's bike, I tried to catch up," said Rid d le. " I was q uadding the Supercross Six to try to make up some time. I had no t done this since two years ago as a B rider, but I knew it wou ld help make u p some distan ce to the fron t-ru nners." , Wal ker wo n t he m ot a wi th ease. Bor uff cha lke d u p fo urt h, a n d Riddle recovered for fifth. In mota two, C hes ter fir ed off the gate in fron t, followed by Tesh and then Riddle. The first three riders rod e elbow to elbow coming out of the second turn. Te sh w ent by C h e ster, and Riddl e passed b oth rid ers to take t he le ad . Walker w as back in fifth . Riddle rod e comfor tab ly to the win. Tesh fou ght off Ches ter, Boruff and Walker for seco nd. Boruff bobbled through a whoo p sec tion a n d we n t ove r h is ba rs. In jured , he w a ved for the p aramedi cs . W a lker crashed into the d owned rid er's bik e and took a spill. Walker recov ered but chose to rema in on the gro u nd to help Boruff, who had broken bo th bon es in his lower leg. Walk er took a DNF for the mot a but won the Spo rtsmans hip awa rd . "Jo n jus t bobb led throu gh th e whoops and th e next thing I knew, he wa s thrown over his bars," Walker said . "I then clipped the back of his bike, bu t he was already on the ground, waving his arms for the medics. He knew his leg was br o ken. I fe lt so so r ry for him. I didn't d o any thing th at all riders in th at situa tio n sho uldn't do ." Tes h wo n the overall w ith a 3-2 sco re after Ches ter, who finished third , pulled off the course on the w hite-flag lap . "I just ke pt go ing ," Tesh said, "a nd the n Chester realized w hat he ha d d one. H e ca me back o n th e track, bu t it was too lat e for him to ca tch up." The ac tion was nonstop in the 125cc D 56 Pro class as Ch ester was again firs t off the ga te, bu t his lea d was s hort-lived. Rid dl e file d bv, fo llowed bv Tesh and then Wa lker. Wa lke r got by Tes h early in the mo ta . Walke r went down, tak ing th e pressure off of Ri ddl e . Walker rem o un ted in las t. Mean w hile, on the second lap, Ridd le also had a get-o ff. Chester took the lead , followed by Tesh, Riddle wo rked his way up to third as he and Tes h tripled th e stairsteps in uni son. Rid d le finally jumped by Tesh into second over a portion of the track called th e Cumber land Fa lls . Riddle th en began to cha rge for C hester. Th e pair p u lled away from the ir competito rs. Chester dou bled the sta irs teps and Riddl e tripl ed them . Ches ter wo n the mo to, w ith Riddle claimi ng seco nd . Wa lker started off the top gun in the seco nd mota, pursu ed by Tesh and Ridd le . Cheste r was back in fifth . Walker filed by the checkered in firs t after Rid dl e suffered a setback, riding out of control over som e jumps. Ridd le cou ld not rega in the d istance lost afte r his miscu e and had to se ttle for seco nd , w hile Tes h too k fourth and C hes te r fifth . Rid d le won the ove ra ll with a 2-2 sco re. Ches ter and Walk er rode side by side through the w hoo ps in th e first Over 25 A mota. Wal ker attempted to take a n inside line, but Chester held him off. O n la p three, Walker agai n tri ed a no ther 'a tt em p t to ge t by Chester in "Wildcat Co rner" bu t was unsuccess fu l. Walker and Ches ter go t into lap ped traffic , and Wal ker took advantage of the situation to make his move into firs t midway through the last lap . The Death Match w as a test of end urance, as a large field wen t a g rueling 25 laps on a very tight track. Randy Skinner just abo u t lapped the entire field and took the go ld , with Cycle News associate ed itor Scott Rousseau seco nd . Th e fi rs t Sc r a tc h se m i h a d "Go rgeou s" Ga ry Hicks on th e pol e, w ith Schwa rtz in two. "Fast" Ed Castro was in three , w ith John "Boy" Aden in four. Th e ga te w ent to Castro, and he went o u t fast a nd hard as he led th e quick four -lapper from s tart to finis h . Schwartz was running second un til the fina l lap, w hen Hicks moved Schwartz out and took s~'Cond . He wou ld move to the ma in w ith Cas tro , w hile Aden and Schwa rtz wo uld ha ve one mo re s hot in the last-chance qualifier. Venegas drew the po le in the seco nd Scratch semi , w it h Sea n " Mad Dog " McConnell in tw o. An dy "The Enforc er" No rthrup loaded into three, w ith " Rad" Brad Oxley in fo u r. McConnell ha d prob lem s ea rly on bu t wou ld hav e one more shot in the LCQ, alo ng wit h Oxley . The p o le w ent to Schwa rtz as they lined u p for the LCQ. Next to him was McCo nnell. O xley had drawn three, an d Aden was on th~ outside in four . When th e gate ca me up , Schwartz ex plod ed off the pole, and it was over as soon as it starte d . The fina l r id er in the Scra tch ma in was Schwa rtz. Ox ley, Aden an d McConnell follow ed him home. The draw for the ma in saw Castro on the pole . North rup was in two, with Schwa rt z in th ree. Ven ega s and H icks we re on the outsi de in three and four . It wo uld be har d to say w ho cut the best gate, as they all broke pretty even . They we re five abreast as thev hit the first tum , bu t wh en they came ou't of two , it was all Schwartz. Nor thru p was a solid seco nd, but Venegas and Castro were w agin g a wa r, wo rking the outside d irt as they battled for third . Venegas held it for two bu t then Castro got a s lig ht edge as th ey ca me arou nd o n three a nd held on to tak e the show spot. Hicks was also ab le , to get by Venega s and pick up fourth . In th e first Hand icap se m i, Randy Skinner held the lead for th e first two laps. "Rockin" Richa rd Jones wa s in seco nd , but when Hicks go t a little too up close and per sonal on the second lap , Jon es end ed up in th e dirt and the red w as out. H icks wa s se n t to th e back o f the pa ck and they lined up sing le file for the , final laps. Skinner held on for one lap , but Venegas ran him dow n a nd with one lap to go Skinner was m o ved out a nd Aden and Hicks mov ed into second and th ird . The final transfer spo t went to Jones. Kit Na y did a g re a t job holding off th e field in the second Handicap se m i. He took it righ t down to th e wire, but Jim Estes pu t the pressure on and with tw o lap s to go he took the lead . Northrup, McCo nnell we re seco nd and thi r d, a nd in a clo se ca ll it was Ermo len ko over O xley fo r th e fi na l tran sfer spot. The Han d icap main had Jon es on the 20, Estes o n th e 30 and Er molenko o n the 40. Ade n and Northrup shared the 50, and Venegas, Hicks and McCon nell took the ir places o n the 60. Estes we nt out o n top, wit h Venegas flying from the lon g ya rdage for second . One lap later, Ve negas was o n top a nd goi ng away,
