(Above) Hus qvarna's Ales sio Chiod i wrapped up his th ird-straight 125cc World Championship. to pass Bartolini, and was never headed again. Not that he wasn't pressured. Van Wessel stormed onto Aaltonen's rear wheel and despe rate ly sought an opening for 20 minutes , before a mi nor e rror lost him contact , and S mets kept the r a ce alive un til the checkered flag with his cha rge from an initial 10th. Bartolini, meanwhile, had offered little res is ta nce to any of the trio. "They were not a danger to me, and , after the ra in, the track is very dangerous," Bartoli ni said. "It would be so easy to m a ke a mistake." Down to fou r th by half d is ta nce, h e was 200 vards ahead of Jo hansson in fifth - and des pite a ll the Sw ede's efforts, tha t was how it would s tay. "The race seemed to la st foreve r," admitt ed th e new cha mp lat er . Ind eed it did, as Aalt on en just beat the 40 m inute b oard a n d m ad e th e race 40 minutes plus th ree laps. He w as p assed for sixth on the last lap by Shayne King. If Bartolini had ridden wi th the title in mind in race one, he went out in the second to show he is a true champ. Af ter a first-lap pass on Aaltonen, no one saw him again, a nd th e on ly threa t to his victo r y came 10 minu tes fr o m the end when th e Ita lia n got cross-rutted on a table top a n d s pen t two laps burni n g ta p e ou t of h is rea r bra ke after goi ng off the side. The team's silver medal was sa fe. Yves Demaria had ridden only a few laps all day after landing on his injured knee in the morni ng , while Smets ha d go ne down in a hea p with, among o thers, Burnham at turn three. Without a clutch , the deposed champ, Smets, recovered to ninth, one behi nd Willie Van Wessel , who had ea rlier crashed in turn two.
