On the Scra tch side of th e program. Venegas e xte nded hi s w innin g s trea k to three w hen he topped ou t the n ight' s fina l race . In th e m ai n, Ven egas d rew the insid e po le starting position for the third stra igh t week. Next to 'The Edge" in lane tw o was Bobb y Hedde n . Bas t and Mike Faria occu pied grids three an d four. Venegas pulled off a picture-perfect start, with his fro nt tire slightly off the turf and lead ing the wa y into the first tu rns. Hedden W~lS also ou t fast and drove hard on the insid e line as Faria tried to play catch- u p n the outsid e cushion . Bast sfuck to the inside line, right behind Hed d en . As the four-la p race unfold ed , Ven egas main tained his fron t-ru n n ing position despite co nsta nt pressure from Faria on the outside and Hedden on the inside. At the fina l set of turns, Venegas had to d ecid e wh ich line to protect, and he op ted to d rift wide in the att empt to shu t out Faria . Hed d en too k advan tage and drove Flaw les sly o n the poll' and ap pea red to steal the wi n away (rom the fron t-run ner at the line. Krahenbuhl and DeFalco were puttin g on a g re a t show: It was pass and repass for the two lead ers for the first few laps. Steele and Mon tague were passin g spo ts three and fou r back a nd for th as we ll. Kra henbuhl was lett ing it all l-ang out and was ma int a ini n g a slim lead wh en mechani cal g rem li ns too k him ou t 25 minu tes int o th e 45min ut e-plus race. Defalco was now in command , bu t Mon tague, having emerged from the dogfigh t with Steele, was creeping closer to the leader with every lap . With th e fatigue factor ge tti ng worse wi th every lap, Montague claimed the lead at the th ree-quarter mark and never looked back. Mon tague went on to finish first overall and first 12Scc Expert, a hea d o f Dan Defa lco, who took seco nd overall and seco nd 125cc Expert. Cha rley Renni e capped a gritty come- from-be hind rid e to w h istle P. St the checkers in third and capture first 250cc 1 Expert. Robert Marshall Was next acro ss the line to claim th ird 125cc Expert, ah ead of the firs tplace Open bike of Ma lt Gos nell and Jo rdan Dula, the second 250cc Expert. Kevin Roberts showcased h is all-aro u nd ver sa tility a nd exce llen t cond itioning as he w on the co m bi ne d Amateur classes on h is Su pe r m in i.
