Robinson was a close secon d off the line, bu t Jason Bons igno re pulled by on. the in s id e comi ng into th e second set of tu rns. O n lap three, Gene hooked up and wen t wide, laying it down. Jason inhe rited the w in, with Robinson second a nd Mon ell third . Gene came home fourt h. In the thi rd heat , Sep h to n took th e ga te from on e, with Nelso n next. Oakd en gave Nelson a good run on the ou tside but drifted off of turn three. Sep hton took the win, with Nelson second , Oakden third and Math ewson fourth. Th e fourth heat was a nother s howd own between Deim and Rafferty. Deim took the lead . Raffert y staye d close but coul d neither pull Deim fro m the outside nor drop und erneath . Dei rn took t h e w in , with Rafferty s econd a n d Ven inski third. After four rounds, onl y one rid er had a perfect score of 12 points: Deirn. Sephton and Raffert y were tied at II points. Nelson had 10 point s, Parsons had nine , Jason Bonsi gnore had eigh t, Robinson had s eve n, and Cortes e ha d th e la s t transfer spot with six points. By th e second lap of the first se mi, Deirn had pu lled enough of a lead to drop to the pipe and protect the ins ide lin e. Nelson s tayed clos e bu t did not challenge for the lead , eventually finish in g seco nd . Cor tese a nd Pa rsons took third and four th. In th e seco nd semi , Robinso n s u rprised the cro wd w it h a perfec t ga te from the insid e. Sephton came out second , go t a goo d drive off the outsid e and pulled by Robin son goin g down the back straigh t, but d rifted wid e thro ugh turns thr ee a nd four, let tin g Rob inson retak e the lea d . Se ph to n tried to cross back to the inside bu t high -sided, allowing Raffer ty to tak e second . Robins on cru ised to the win, with Ra fferty second and Bonsigno re third . As the ta pes w ent up for the LCQ, Seph ton took the ga te and pull ed awa y to the win. Cor tese cam e off the line next but Bons ign o re wa s a b le to pull him down the back straight and assu me second . On lap two, Parsons caug ht Cortese, but Co rtese outpowered the rookie going down the straight. The extra speed , how ever, ca used Cortese to drift in the second set of turns, allowing Parson s to take the position . Parsons began to challenge Bonsignore for second but couldn't make the pa ss stick until Bonsignore drifted. Sep hto n took the last spot in the main . . Parsons fin ished se con d , Bon si gnore third and Cort ese four th. The lineup for the ma in had Robin s on in one, Rafferty in ' two , Deirn in th ree, Seph to n in four a nd Nelson on th e outs ide . When the tapes wen t up, Robinson on ce again pulled a stu nning ga te from the pole. Deirn was second to move, but Seph ton had a good dri ve off the outsid e. By the apex of the first set of turns, Sephton had a clear ad van tage, bu t Deim hooked up and shot between Sephton and Robinson. Meanwhile, Raffert y, who had been caug ht snooz ing at the line, go t underneath Robinson, who had parked a bit off the corne r. The battle for second p lace was on, as Raffert y sys tema tica lly ran Sephton down . Raf- ferty would pu ll eve n thro ugh the corners but Sephton would get the drive off th e outsid e and pull b y d o w n th e straig hts. The war wen t on for the three remaining laps , with Raffer ty taking second by. half a length at the line. Sephton finish ed thir d, Ne lson fourth and RobineN son at the rear .
