AUG. 15 a w a sa k i- m o u n te d Ja s on Kear e a rned top honors in th e 250cc Open A and Collegebo y classes at the Tri Stat e Mot ocro ss Cha m pio nshi ps hosted by Tom Hurd Promotions at the Hurricane Hills Sp ort s Center. Som e 350 ra cer s signe d up to race the 28 cla sses slated for th e d ay's program. Mother Nature cooperated and su pplied a beautifu l summer d ay . Tom Hurd a nd h is crew provided ra cer s with track con ditions that were nothing short of perfect. .Mike Dou gherty go t th e racing u nder wa y in t he fir st 250c c Open A moto when he managed to ge t th e jump off the gate and the early lead . Trailing him K 56 were Kea r, Tom Littman, Dian Primioni and Tony Cavazza. Dougherty, showing extreme confidence on the op en ing lap, trip led for the spectator s and put so me ' dista nce betwee n h imself an d Kea r . Nea r the end of lap one, Cavazza mov ed u p a positi on to four th and Brian Hill was fifth . Do ug herty 's lead was seven seco nds by the sta rt of lap two. The top five spread out and th e running order we nt unchanged thr ou gh lap three. Ca rl Snyder passed Hill for fifth , dropping Hill out of the top five. Dougherty took the ch eckers a nd the moto win w ith a ]4-second le ad over Ke ar, Littm an, Cavazza and Snyder. _ Kear ma na ged to earn ho leshot hono rs in the second 250cc Open A moto but s o o n found himself looking at Dougherty' S rear tire. Kear then passed Dougherty back for the lead in the following turn. They swa p ped the lead back an d fou rth until the halfwav ma rk of lap two, w he n Kea r finally managed to put some d istance be tween hi mse lf and Doughe rty. Rou ndi ng o ut the to p five were Litt man, Clin t Esposito, and H ill. Ke a r , wi th o nly a five-second ad va ntage, m ana ged to hold Dou gh erty off for th e res t of the m ot o. Kear and Dou gh er ty were side by side go ing over th e spec tator triple w he n the .white flag cam e ou t. Dou gh erty came up short on th e landing, giving Kear some breathing ro om. Kear took the second- mota w in and th e ov erall wi th h is 2-] sc o re . Rou nd in g o u t th e top fi've w e re Dou gh erty, Espo sito , Littman and Snyder. Fred Met zger go t th e jum p o n th e pa ck in the fir st 250cc Open B m ot o, with Ton y Peregrin, Frank Pa squal e, Jason Wocniski and Matthew Kessler in tow . Peregrin took th e lea d a fte r th e spec ta tor triple. Carl Wolter moved up to second , Metzger d ropped to third , Da vid Gin olfi mo ved u p to fou rth and Wo cni sk i d r opped to fifth . Gi n olfi moved up to third by the hal fway mar k of lap one a nd was in seco nd and pressuring Peregrin for the lead by the start of lap three . Gi no1fi mad e the pass for the lead on lap three an d qu ickly pulled away . The top five w er e now G ino lfi, Peregrin, Wolter , Met zger and Woen iski. Rich Atk inson wa s pr essu ring Woenisk i for fifth by the last lap and man aged to ge t not o nly him, but Met zger , too . Ginolfi took the checkered flag with a ] 7-seco nd lead, trail ed by Peregrin , Wolter, Atkinson and Met zger. . Metzger managed to get the jump on the pack aga in in th e seco nd rnoto, with Peregrin. Pasqua le, Wolt er and Wocn iski in tow. Per egr in had th e lead by the halfway mark of the firs t lap . Pasquale m o ved u p to s ec o n d , Wolt e r th ird , Gino lfi fourth, and Metzger d ropped to fifth. Per egrin m an a ged to o pen up a seve n-second lead by th e s ta rt o f la p two. Pasqu ale failed to d o the hu ge Hurric an e s te p -u p o n lap tw o and it co st him dearl y. Ginolfi and Wolt er moved up to se co n d a n d th ird . Pasq u ale d ropped to fourth. Sho rtly after moving up to third, Wolter d ropped it in a corner, allowi ng Pasq ua le to move back up to th ird . Gino lfi closed the gap on Peregrin and took the lead sho rtly after th e start of lap three. Th e top five were now Gi no lfi, Per egrin, Pa squ a le, Woc n isk i and Atki nson . Atkinson passed Woeniski for four th at the beginning of th e last lap . G ino lf i fi nis hed t he m o to with an oth er] 7-seco nd lead and earned him self top honors with a pe rfect] -] score.
