CI> rn 50 MILLVILLE, MN,JULY25 At th e fifth round ' of t he Sup er Series at th e Spring Creek MX facility, Bruce Ga tes won two of th ree classes, swee pin g the Vet A class 1 ~1 and winning the 250cc A class wit h a 2-1 over Cory Keeney's 1 -2, and then finished second to Kee ney in the Over.2 5 ~ cla ss w ith a 1-2 to Keeney's 2-1. Temp era tu res we re close to 100, wi th tropica l d ew points tha t made the heat ind ex abo ut 115 degrees. Recent storms washed awa y large sections of the track, and John Martin a nd the H igh Wind ers club worke d lo ng hou rs to mak e the event possible. At the start of the Vet A class, Gates put his RBP-backe d CR250 ou t front as Scott Ru egg , Rusty Sorenson, Dan Marcotte an d Robert Halstea d gave chase . Afte r the sa nd -wa sh w hoo p section, Ga tes already had a four-second lead on Ruegg, who went down before the first uphil l. "I tried to find a smooth line." Ruegg said lat er, "and the sand just suc ked m y fro nt end awa y." After lap one of five, Ga tes had a nine-secon d lead on se co n d- p laced Sorenson . Gates went on for a huge win, wit h Sorenson second , Ti m Bernl oeh r t hi r d , Ma rc o tt e fou rt h , a nd Ruegg fifth . Marcotte, returning to racing after a d ecade's absence, nail ed the holesh ot in fron t of Gates, Ruegg a nd Sorenso n. No t only did Ga tes pass Marcotte in th e sa nd w as h , but h e aga in eme rge d with a fou r-second lead on Mar cott e. Gates we nt on to another easy moto win. Mar cott e a nd Sor en son battled for seco nd, going back a nd fort h for a cou ple of lap s. Sore nso n secu red second and Mar cotte took third in the mota and third overall, with Ruegg fourth and Bernl oehr fifth. In the Vet B class, Mike "Fast" Fox took the overa ll win. In mota one, "S to rrnin'" Norma n Miesen nailed the holeshot but fad ed to 19th by ~oto's end . Bern Seleskl then led the pack for a wh ile , on ly to ha ve Rob Irving a nd Fo x pass later in the moto. Irving took the mota win, followed by Fox, Seleski, Kevin Schlege l and Car l Hein. . Mota two saw Seleski take the lead off the start and keep it for the ea rly portion o( the race, but Fox move d th rough the rid ers a nd took the lead by the th ird lap. Fox we nt on to tak e the win, followed by Irving, w ho m oved in to seca nd . Seleski was third . Lonny Brown mad e up for a first-mota 16th by taking four th. Clean Silva gleans gold out of Hard Rock Trial By Darlene Williams OSCOGROVE,CA,JULY 17 After th ree challengin g loops through the high Sie rra hard ro cks, Yama ha TY250 rid er John Silva stayed d ean to the finish to win the Mod ern Classic Intermedi at e class at round five of th e PITS " Good Old Da y s" Cha m pio ns hi p Series . It was a close 'C on tes t, as se ries lead er Silva faced tou gh competition from rivals Fred Eld re d a nd Bob Will iams Sr., bot h o f w ho m posted excellent sing le-digit final scores for second and third place for the da y. Silva and Eldr ed matched scores through the first few sections , bu t Eld red erred in the fou rth section, taking a d ab whe n a rock slipped under h is Bultec o's rea r tir e. It was th e on ly p oint Eldre d suffered on this loop, as he returned, to clean form for the four remaining sections. Stayingin the hunt at the conclusion of the lap with se ve n po in ts eac h w ere Williams a n d Jason Plank. Yama ha riders Silva and Williams each had a clea n second loop , bu t Eld red took a no th er single da b and Plank took tw o. The low scores continued as the third loop was attemp ted . Silva remained clean to take the win. Eld red aga in dropped only a sing le poin t for a trial total of three points and second place. Williams had a good final la p, finishin g the meet with a total of eight po ints, wh ich gave him the final pod ium positi on over Plank, wh o tallied a 14 for the d ay. Mod ern Bike Interm ediate winner Bob Endicott also had a per fect ride on the three line as he kept it clean on his Fantic. Beta ride r Tuey Dickerson was second with a pair of two-pa int -laps followe d by a clea n final loop . 'Gas Gas rid er Toni Van Gaasbeek and Chu ck Ca plinger tied wit h six points eac h after th e final loop, so a rid e-off on the two line was used to de termine who w ould ge t th ird p lac e. In th e en d, Va n Gaasbeek claimed the pri ze. • Excellen t rid es on the three line were also posted by Bruce Stevens; who had a one-po in t ride on his Premier Ughtweight Greeves, and by Mark McGreg or , who pa rla yed a th ree-point rid e on a Beta int o a Junior Intermed ia te-division win. In the Junior Novice class, Benji Heckma n took an easy win with yet another clean ri de. "I run grea t in the hea ts, feel comforta ble," John son rema rked before the main, "but I tense u p for the mains and just can' t put it together for the win." Faulds grabbed the holeshot in fron t of Brad Letcher and Johnso n. Johnso n took second from Letcher entering the infield and calmly sta lked Fau lds for severa l laps as Letcher, Chad johnson and c.j . Beving battled for third . Faulds led for three la ps before Mike made his mo ve to take over th e top spo t. Let ch e r a nd Chad pulled a way from Beving . Mike held a comfortable lead over Fauld s. While trying to protect the ins ide li ne int o th e infield, Letche r lost thi rd w he n Chad drove in har d , got on the gas ea rly a nd pu lled alongsid e to stea l the prefer red line on the second half of the esses, Mike gra bbed the checkers. Fau lds was second , Chad third , and Letcher and Beving com pleted the top five. Fauld s we nt into the first com er of the 250cc Pro cont est flanked by Letcher and Beving, but he secured the lead. Beving had used the high line to tak e over seco nd befor e the end of the first lap . Beving tried to ma tch Faulds' pace but wa s u nsu ccessfu l. Let cher stru gg led to keep pace with the leaders but had to settl e for third . Faulds took the w in with Bevin g severa l bike lengt hs behind. Faulds d id not finish the Open Pro heat race, a nd Rob b ie Jones too k the w in. In the ma in, Faulds, Jones and Pete Tap ken were thr ee wide going fo r the hol esh o t. The Ro ta x-mo u n ted Faulds secured the top spo t, with jo nes and Tapke n on hi s he els . Bevin g p assed Le tcher for fourt h on the secon d lap and bega n to pr essu re Tapken . Faulds and jones pu lled away from the batt le for third. Lap after lap , Tap ken and Beving hammered on each other around the entire track, w hile Letch er wai ted for an y mis takes. Bev ing took ove r th ird on the sixth la p a nd p ulled a two-bi ke-len gth lead . Ta pk en ree led him ba ck in w ithin a half a lap a nd took the posi tion back two laps later. Faulds managed to pull a health y lead . Beving was takin g shots at Tapken througho u t the final four laps but could not ge t the ad vantage. Bob Anderson, who was havin g tech nica l difficu lties earl y in the race, was ba ck o n track a nd clos ed in on Let cher .
