The RPMz / Shock Therapy / Wind Gea r-backed Davi s had about as C close to a perfect game as a motocrosser coul d have. Davis led every lap of fou r races and lost the holeshot onl y once in six a ttemp ts on the weekend, in the Open Pro, 250cc Pro and Open Gr and Prix. Have yo u ever dreamed of having you r o w n privat e track in th e mountains, with rich, loamy dirt, fifth-ge ar uphills, a n in cr edible natural la yout, and a personal crew to groom and wa ter the track? Add 40 or 50 of you r closest buddies, grea t trophies, and a com p limentary 45-minute Grand Prix, and yo u are in mot o fantasy land! Davis st arted ou t the weekend by be sting Jus tin Pe lti er in th e Open Pro class. Davis used the added horsepower of his RPMz-backed big-bore YZ250 to gra b the h oleshot and check out with the wire-to-wire vic tory . Keeping Davi s honest a ll weekend wa s 17-year-o ld Inte rm edia te Justin Scu ll en . Th e 0 ' N eiI/ Ma xima / Brid gestone-backed YZ400 rid er cha se d Da vi s as th e Pros a nd Interm ediates left from th e same g ate. Scu ll e n w a s unbeat abl e in th e Open Interm edia te and 250cc Intermed iate classes, scoring a perfect 1-1 in both. "The ra ce was a lo t o f fun ," sa id Scullen af te r what was only h is third race b ack a fter h a ving knee .su rgery. "The Mammoth staff d id a n excellen t job. I hope to be bac k next year." As a n added bonus, a t the en d of each d ay, the Ma m moth crew h eld a free 45-minu te gra nd prix that was open to all racers. The grands prix we re dominated once again by Davis. "That was g reat bu t ex ha usti ng," said Davis. "I rode as hard as I cou ld for all 45 minutes. I'm wasted ." Davis was on fire an d rid in g fla wlessl y, co ns is te n tly turning 2:16 la p times on the l -mi le circuit. . Da vi s co n tin u ed his ons la u g h t o n d ay tw o, in the 250cc Pro class. Davis grabbed the holeshot in both motos and fended off up-and-coming AMA Pros Chris Neitzel and Zeb Armstrong. "I los t my rear bra ke on the second lap ," Neitzel rep orted . " I tried to s tay wit h him, bu t it was .impossible without the rear brake." Armstrong, in fou rth place, waged a heated battle with Inter mediate Scu llen until Armstrong hit the dirt hard after overshooting a turn . He mana ged to shake off the pain, bu t the leaders were go ne. In moto two , it was Davi s once again launching his YZ int o the lead at the end of the fifth- gear Mammoth hill. Disaster struck Neitzel, w ho serious ly d islocated his shou lder while sto rmi ng d own the Mam mo th downhill. " I d idn 't eve n cr as h ," e itzel explained. "I was coming d own the hill an d hit a bra kin g bump, and my should er po pped ou t:' Neitzel d id not finis h. Armstron g again had trouble ge tting a ro u n d Scull en , w h o looked ve ry im pressive, w hip pi ng his YZ400 ar ound the fast, loamy track . Arms trong taking second, which was good enough for second overall. In the Mini (9-11) class, it was the RM o f fi ve-time California Sta te champ Michael LaPaglia securi ng the overa ll honors with a perfect 1-1. laPaglia had his hands full in both motos with MSR/ProValve -backed Dane Jackson and Bryan Min ter . KX-mounted Casey Logan secured seco nd overall after Jackso n and Min ter went d own in separate incidents. Minter defini tely gets the Most Spectacula r Crash of the Weekend Awa rd: After landing on a mons ter tabletop preced ing the last turn before the finish-line jum p, Minter's throttle stuck wide open. and the alert Minter jumped off the bike, which looked like a guided missile shooting through the air and over the 4-foot-high hay bales. Fortunately for the two fans who were sta ndi ng there, thev ducked in the nick of tim e. Minter was a little sha ken but unh urt. "We wo n't tell Mom abo u t this one," sai d Minter's father. In th e 125cc Ju nio r cl a ss, it was C hris toph er Lore d o and Ch ris Taylor w ho were a head of the class. Th e duo shad owed each other for 10 laps in each mo to, showing w heels and passing a t e ve r y opportunity . Th e two fr iend s were going for the win .
