Alth ough many people o p te d n ot to make the trip up the hill, it did not sto p them from watchi ng. Because yo u could see the course from almost anywhere on th e grounds of th e Ski Ra nch, heads everywhere wo uld turn tow ard the hill eac h tim e a bik e took off. Espec ially so in the big Pro Modified , most of wh ich ran eleven or twelv e hundred cc in-line fo u rs s t uffed in to m oto cr o ss b ik e fra mes. Whe n one of them took off, it so unded like a d rag race, and it was a d rag race to the top. Ridin g every imaginable type of two (or three) w heeled ve hicle, from t h e featu r ed Bue lls to "po cket rockets," from a vintage Vince nt with sidecar to at leas t one full dress Harley. This eve nt was a pop u lar one, a ttracting both a stead y strea m of ri d e rs and s iza b le a u die nce t ha t packed the deck of the lodge for most of the da y on Sunday. The sections ranged from a rock an d log pile near the bottom of the Dirt Hillcli mb to a spectacu lar, thrilling sect io n in the boulder cliffs overlooking Hi ghway 40 and the Rainbow Bridge w it h Donner Lak e in the distance. Man y of the spectators had never seen Trials befo re and we re captivated by the balance and finesse di spla yed by th ese rid ers. Following each section , Geoff and Ryan put on a d isplay of tricks, showcasi ng so me of the skills that make a good Tria ls rid er. Tail-d ragging wheelles. lon g fron t wheel wheelies and 180 degree hops held the spectators spellbound, after w hich they wo uld stay to talk to the riders abo ut the sport. At one poin t Geoff rod e across the flat parki ng lot and hopped over six voluntee rs laying sid e by side, on e of them snapping his picture as he fle w .over. Geoff was th e off icia l wi n ne r of th e competition although th e real winner was the spo rt of Trials, gai ning a lot of · new fans this week end. The weekend wa s also one of the five eve nts includ ed in the Cla yton Memorial Foundation's V.J.P. Super Ticket. Others w ere the Ha ngtow n Nationa l Mo tocross, th e Sacramen to Mil e , the AMA Superbike ational a t La guna Seca and the AMA Speedway National Championships at Fast Fridays. Th e Donner Ski Ranch has been instrumenta l in originating a nd supporting the VIP Super Ticke t, d on ating 200 p asses for the week en ds events.
