Eve nts Diem gleams at New Champion Speedway By Ti m Mathewson Pho to by Rus s Co rnell OWEGO, NY, JULY10 Warren Diem continued his domination of New Cha mpio n Speedway, p ickin g up the w ins in both the Scra tch and H andicap main eventa as we ll as the Poor Man ' s Tru ck in g-sponsored Dash For Cas h. Th e lin eup fo r t he H andica p main ha d s peed way rooki e Cra ig Este lle on the 3D rd -ya line, Gene Bonsignore and Joel Mone ll on the 40, a n d on th e 50 it wa s Tom Seph tan in one, Tommy Burge in two and Warr en Diem against the wall. As the tap es we nt up, Estelle assumed the lead , followed by Bonsign ore. Monell lifted bad ly off the line and was qui ckly relegated to last p lace by the back-yard age rid ers. 'Sep hton a n d Diem q u ick ly ca ug h t up to Bonsign or e. Sep hton went und ern eath Bonsignore but Diem had to hunt for traction on the ou tside. By lap two , Estelle had pull ed out to a four -bike-length lead ove r Sephto n. By lap thr ee, Scph ton had begun to gai n on the lead er , bu t Diem was reeling th em bot h in . In th e midd le of the turn, Estelle straightene d up a bit, ca using Sep hto n to do th e sa me . Diem cro ssed back unde rn eath Sep hton and the tw o drag-raced dow n the back stretch . Entering tu rn three, Sephton straigh tene d up and went wide. Diem he ld th e insid e line and set his sights on Estelle. Diem ass um ed the lead by the star t of.lap five an d never loo ked ba ck. Estelle fin ished seco nd , with Sep ht on third. Bur ge, Bonsign or e an d Mon ell rounded ou t the field. The line up for the Scratch ma in had Estelle on the pol e, w ith Diem in two, Scphton in three a nd Bon sig nore o n th e o u ts ide in four. The red light came on a nd Bonsignore was sent to the pena lrv line. ~ On the restart , Diem a nd Sep hton left first, but Est elle was p ulling hard up the ins ide . At th e apex of the tu rn , a ll three we re virt u a lly even. Exiting turn two, Diem shot between the other two rid ers, pulling clear by turn thr ee. By lap two, Diem had started to pu ll away. Estelle was seco nd, running a bit off the groove. This allowed th ird -placed Sephton to square off and - corne up the insid e. Corn ing into turn o ne hot , Sep hton almost collided wi th Estelle, wh o had stra ightened up in mid turn. Ente ring tu rn four, Estelle parked a nd Sephton , who had alrea dy com mi tte d .to the inside lin e, could not avoid him . Neither rider went do wn , but Estelle's bike skid ded to a stop d ue to a thrown cha in. Scph- ' ton pulled away u nsca th ed and a tte mp ted to ca tch th e lead er, but Diem was a lrea dy go ne. Th e turnout was hot, too, with a field of 12, including firsttime ra ce rs a nd returni ng rid ers, an d a gr ea t group of about 35 spectators. New me mbers Da vid Hend erson and Jord an Reid of Qua zzymoto Racing in Columbus, Ohio, joined ve teran OYLers Jim DiVittorio an d Erik Dietric h of H eschem u ra Racing in Pi ttsburgh, Pen nsy lva nia; Jeff New som of Ragin' Racin' in Dayton, Ohio; and Bart Baue r of Team Valvo line in Dayt o n to po st a success fu l day of po dium ' fin ishes. Despite a miscue at th e start (the flag blew ou t of the starter's hand - reallyl). the day's first Sup er Sport sp rint proved to be an exciting race, wi th the Expert " wa ve" starting ah ead of the No vices . At the start of mote one, Fred A rm br uster 'snagged the ho leshot aboard his Honda CRSOO. Steve Man gione sho ved his RM250 int o seco nd, and Ludovic Boinnard ran th ird on his Yamaha TT·R250 thumper. Sanda rdi was in fourth when the race rs ca me ou t of the ba ck section for the firs t tim e, w hil e Suz u ki pilot Kev in Gotto ran fif th. Boinn ard encountered trou ble in the back section on the first la p, and he ca me a round in d ead las t: Th e Sca lzo brothers moved a ro u nd Mangion e an d began to argue over sec on d for two lap s. A t th is point, Ga tor, wh o wa s in third , clipped a hay bale in an a ttem pt to find a line arou nd his bro ther an d bailed off his machine, remounting wa y back in the pack. Meanwhile, Sa nd a rdi now held a fi ve -seco nd adva n tag e over second-placed Brian Scalzo. Man gione was han ging toug h in th ird , w hile Go tto rod e in fourth . Loveday maintained fifth. San dard i rode m is tak e-fr ee , a n d a t th e w h ite fla g he h ad stretched his lead to seven secon ds ov er Scalzo. Th e last lap saw no changes, and a t the end of th e m ote , Sa nda rd i was first , Sca lz o second, Mangione third , Gotto fourth and Loveday fifth. I A, The Centra l Illinois Motorcycle Club of Neoga, Illinois, ha s been hosting a King of t he H ill Series for the past seve ral years. Th is year, five hillclimb s we re held , an d only one rid er, Wa de Schu ltz , emerged as a d o ub le cl a ss w in ne r. Schultz wa s a conv incing wi n ner in the Ope n class, winning all fou r of the eve nts he en tered and accumu la ting 80 point s on his fast Harl ey. St eve Sha fe r, rid ing in all five e ve n ts o n h is Harley, accu mu la ted 63 point s for th e second sp ot, a nd 15-year -old Jacob Bailey ea rned the third spo t on his 800cc Triumph. Buzz Green finished fourth on his Harley, and 15-year-oId Scott "Scoo ter" Sheets cla imed fifth on his Har ley. Sch u ltz wa s a lso per fect o n hi s H a rl ey in four even ts in the Pushrod cla ss, ama ss ing 80 po ints there as we ll. "Flyin'" Bob Fisher , rid ing his Su perior Cycle Sportster four times, picked up on e wi n and 59 points for seco nd place, wi th Ste ve Sha fer a nd Jacob Bailey fo llow ing him, each w ith 56 poin ts in five rides, and 15-year-old Josh Ca rr ier co mi ng in fifth o n his Triu mph , with 49 po ints. The 400cc class was intense, with only fou r p oint s se pa ra ting the to p th ree riders at the beginni ng of the fina l event. Ma tt Peters ca rne into the last day on his 301cc Hon d a w ith 50 poin ts, while Steve Shafer and Dou g Cam pbell each had 46 points. Wi th a four-point d ifference Off th ey go at Owego! Racers launc h off t he li ne at New Champion Speedway in New Yo rk. between first and second place, a tie was a de fini te po ssibility. Brent Stewa rt too k that possi bility a wa y, howe ver , as he took the wi n on his KTM, wi th Campbell finish ing seco nd . Pe ters took th ird place, w hich is wo rth three po ints less than second, so he ended up wi th the series title by a single po int, followed by Campbell, Shafer, Stew art and Cliff Denson. Per haps the mo st dra matic ac tion ca me in the 750cc class, in which Tom Daniels started the last da y w it h an eig ht-p oint lead on his "Wild Th ing" trip le over "Lightning" Lane Schu ltz and his Yama ha twi n. If Daniels finis hed third an d Schu ltz won the last climb, Daniels wo uld win the series by on e point - but if he finished fourt h, he wo uld lose by one point. Schultz posted an exce lle n t 3.096-seco nd tim e in th e first ro u nd and looked to have a lock on first. Wade Schultz was in second p lace w ith a J. 263-seco nd time, and Daniels was third wi th a 3.293-seco nd run. . In sec ond- round ac tion, Wad e Sch ultz ma de his se cond s pot eve n m ore so lid with a goo d 3.153-seco nd time, a nd Daniels mad e his third spot mo re secure with a 3.218-seco nd run. Bu t "Fas t A nd y" Fortner played the spoiler , saili ng his Ho nd as aki triple over the to p in 3.162 seconds to m ove into thi rd. The to p fou r rid ers we re pa cked into a span of twelve-hund red ths of a seco nd .
