Events By Drew Lin coln File ph oto by Andy Chadwell ~ CD .c E CD ii CD en 42 SUMMIT POINT, WV, AUG. I amiliarity with the often slippery track surface at th e Summit Point Racew ay in West Virginia can lead to fas t lap tim es for the regional racers w ho freq ue nt the facility on a monthly basis. Local fas t guys Ma rk Jun ge, Tim Bem isd erfer , David Rose and Murphy Anderson each had a win and a second to their credit by the en d of the d ay on Sunday. Ju n ge, ha ili ng from Union G rove, Wisconsin, may not be a "local " rider, but he d id atte nd riders school at Sum mit Po int Ra ce w a y a nd h a s put in cou nt less hou rs on end ura nce bikes a t the track. The Vesrah/ Marshall Distribu ting-ba cked Kawasak i rid er u sed his Mich eli n-eq u ip ped ZX-9R to decimate the field in the Open Super Stock race. Junge ea rned hi s secon d O pen Super Stock race win in a row afte r achievi ng a better suspension setup, wit h the help of Traxxio n Dynamics, tha t enables him to u se the potent horsepower of the bigbore Kawasa ki. Brothers Tim and Bryan Bemisderfer had a racelong scrap to see w ho would end up second. Tim, who ho lds the track recor d at Summit Point Raceway, got the better of his brother at the finish, using a Suzuki GSX-R750 to beat Bryan's Yamaha YZF600 R-6. Co ming off his first Pi relli 600cc Super Stock race ....'in of the yea r at Road Atlanta, Ga ulding's SIo "9and Cycle/Team Pro-Motion -backed Davi d Rose was the man to bea t at h is ho me track. Ju nge g rabbed th e hol esh ot a t the s ta rt and held off Rose's Team Pro-Motion-backed Suzuki for the first lap , onl y to be overtaken braking for tum one . Jun ge stayed close to Rose the entire distance, tryi ng to rid e around th e o u ts id e in nearly every comer of the track, but Rose knew w here the fast insid e lines were and put them to good use. Behind them , a giant battle for th ir d eru p ted betw een Bria n Lantz, Bryan Bernisderfer and Arcligh t Suzuki teammates Joe Pru ssiano and Lee Acree. Brvan Bemisd erfer and La n tz traded positions three or four times per WERA National Challenge S eries, Round 6 lap, w hi le Acree, in h is first ride back after suffering a br ok en colla rbone at Indi anapolis, badgered Prus sia no to the very end . At the finish, Rose held a slim one-second lead over Ju nge in second , and Lantz got the better of Bryan Bemisd erfer for third in a d rafting due l on the front straig ht. It was tim e that th e cu rrent track record ho lde r stepped up to the plate to put his wi n in the bag after a second ea rlier in the day. Twigg Cycle /Fredericktown Yamaha /H-D of Frederick-sponso red Tim Bemisderfer used the same Suzuki GSX-R750 to hold off the Pirelli 600cc Super Stock winner, Rose, for the Miche lin 750cc Super Stock win in one of the closest races of the wee kend. At the start, Prussia no and Acree sprang to the front, wit h Prussiano leading for the first lap . Prussiano 's grea t sta rt ta xed the stock Suzuki clu tch parts too far and he pulled off the track a t turn three, giving Acree the lead briefly. O n the third lap, Rose took the point from Acree, follo w ed closely by Bemisderfer. Chris Caylor and his 1-888-FAST-LAP teammate Brian Stokes made the long trip up from Geo rgia to secure fourth and fifth, res pec t ively, a t the end of the race. Bemisderfer moved into the lead on lap six of eight, with Rose literally in his shadow, trying every trick in his book to re pass for the win. At the checkered flag, it was Tim Bemisderfer over Rose bv .27 of a second, with Acree a few seconds adrift of the lead d uo . Im media te ly before the start of the Form ula Two Na tional Cha llenge race, the skies turned dar k and rain began to pour, making a track that is notoriou sly slippery in the d ry nearly im passable in th e w e t. T h e rem a in in g ra ces w e re shortened to four lap s to expose the rid ers w ho still wanted to race to the least a mo un t of d an ger , but on ly a th ird of the field sho wed up to the grid . The conditions d id not d ampen the spirits of New Jersey's Murphy Anderso n, rid in g a Bill Himmelsbach -tuned Yama ha TZ-250. H e ju mped into the lead before the end of the first lap and began to pull away a t a furi ou s pace. By .Jhe end, the Action Yama ha of Edison - backed Anderson had more than 20 seconds between himself and the fight for second be tween Mike Mashewske and Lantz. The d ecid in g fac to r for second was a drag race out of the last corne r to the chec ke rs th at was wo n b v Ma sh e ws ke . A no the r bra v e , yo u ng rider, Ben Sp ies, on hi s Keit h Cherry Ra ci n g Ya ma ha TZ-250, h el d o n to fourt h, ahead of Suzu ki-mo u nted Chip Lincoln in fifth. In the Form ula O ne Na tional Cha llenge race, Anderson ended up second to reigning B Superbike Na tional Champion Bill Mrklas after riding through the field from his last-place starting pos ition. Mrkla s wa s riding his Tea m Adrenali ne Yamaha R-6 against the Yama ha R-l of Quentin Mise, and he put the slowe r bike to good use by keep ing wheels pin , especially on the stra igh taways, down to a minimum. After a slow start, Anderson was de ftly working his way aro un d the o ther riders to catch Mrklas on the last . lap. Anderson tried to ride the long wa y around him in the final tum but lost some ground to the torquey R-6 while drag-racing to the start-finish line for the last time. The Grand Prix Riders Association he ld the third and fina l rou nd of the East Coast Regional Champions hip in the GPRA 12Sec GP series, run in conjunction with the WERA 12Sec GP race. Larry Cohee was the points leader coming into this fina l rou nd , but he would be facing some s tiff competition fro m the young lions of the 125cc class, Jason DiSalvo and Ben Spies. Spies wo n an epic race with DiSalvo at the second round of the GPRA series, held at Road Atlan ta, for his first Nationa l 125 cc G ra nd Pri x w in . DiS a lvo grabbed the holeshot from the midd le of th e front row and wa s never head ed , turning in a flawless race to earn maximum point s in both series and set a new 125cc Grand Pri x co u rs e re cord a t 1:19.676 on the fourth of 10 laps. Spies slo tted into seco nd fro m th e s ta rt but could not match DiSal vo' s pa ce, while local fa vorite Chris Pyles w orked his way throu gh the field to a hard-fou ght third place at the finish . Pyles noted that his age is more than that of both DiSalvo M J unge won his second Open Super ark Stoc k race In a row, at Summit Point Raceway in Wes t Virginia. and Spies combined, and by the way he celebra ted, man y wo uld have thought he had won the race. In the victory .cerem on ies , Spies an d DiSalvo were informed that they were tied in GPRA po ints for th e overall w in by virtue of their first- and second-place finis hes.
