Harriman had tou gh com petition from Californian Tho mas Booth in all three classes. Sou th Dako ta 's Per ry Bicek, a lso Yama ha- mou nted , b eat Io w a ' s jerry Cheney a nd Kevi n Forrester, who both rod e Yamaha IT SODs, to the finis h line for the first of his two class wins, the 600cc Pro final. Bicek then carne back to also win the Pro Masters' final, this time with a win a he ad of Gary Pettis, who was riding the smallest machine in the field, a 360cc Bultaco , The Arizona rid er, Pettis, fended off Cheney's Yamaha to net s eco n d - p la ce money , ahead of Cheney, jerry Hinds and Earl Smith. Yod er, Rickman and Brown w ere winners of the three 600cc Expert class preli minaries; in a field of riders who came from a nine-sta te ra d iu s, a nd which included six Na tio nal number ho lders. Yode r used a win in the first of the three (and fastest ) heats to sit on the inverted pole position, a place neither Rickman nor Brown wanted. Rickman, who had wo n the class the previous nig h t, initially led , b ut was bu mped ou t of the position coming out of turn two by Yode r, but no harm, no foul. "He left me a hole, not much of one, so I took it," Yod er said . "That was all I need ed . I thou ght it wa s a pretty clean pass." Yoder main tained the lead from that point to the wave of AMA Distri ct Referee To m Olson's checkered flag , leaving Rick ma n to squ abble w it h Brown an d ati onal nu m ber 24, Mike Varnes, for the ru nn er-up spo t. Rickman eventu- all y took the posi tion, leaving Brown, the second-year Expert from Newberg, Oregon, wit h his ha nds full. as the veteran, Varnes, was doing all he cou ld to ge t aro und the teenager. But Brown had an answer for all of Varnes' advances. Brown fin ished on th e podiu m for th e second -co nsecutive night with his third place finish beh ind the long-gon e Yoder a nd Rickm a n , b ut ahe ad of Varnes and Ca lifornia n jaime Agu ilar, w ho would come fro m well behind before earni ng the fifth position , ahead of Oregon 's Ryan Anderson, Georgia's Gr eg Tysor and Wisconsin ' s j.R Schnabel. Schnabel, who fini sh ed fou rth in .his heat race , had to overco me a 12th place starti ng positi on , but unlik e Aguilar, Schnabel found himself unabl e to make up much gro und and finished eigh th. Rounding out the top 10 were South Dakota 's Dusty Faulds, a Rookie Expert, and Washington's jerry Southworth . Oregon's Rex Fisher found the conditions deplorable and pulled o ff after two laps. Rotax-mounted jamie Vollm er gave the locals something to cheer about, as for the second nigh t in a row, Sou th Dako ta riders ruled in the 600cc ProSport class. Al though Vollmer did have his han d s full with cha llenges from Wyoming's jake Latimer, Vollmer did fend off a ll of th e Honda rider's advances to ea rn a narrow win .
