Senior rider Scott Shipl ey, out of Greensboro, > > orth Carolina. has always go ne fast in the local Vet classes . At the L'Od of the day, Ship ley had put th e cap on another perfect sweep o f the Over 30 A class, and backed that up with the Ove r 25 A win by way of his 2·1 score. Ship ley pitted h is Dasco Tra n s p o rt / Answer/Silkolene YZ250 up against the Yamaha of his longtime rival Brian McNeill in both molos of Ove r 30 A racing, but moto two was by far the best. Ship ley 1L'd the way Irom the drop of the ga te wh ile McNeill's YZ hove red right on Ship ley's rear fender until the last lap. As the pair blasted pas t the flag, it was Shipley ta king the nod by mer e inches. In-Pro-class facing, one rid er started off like ga ng bus te rs, loo kin g as though he wo u ld ta ke the ove ralls in both the 125cc A and 250cc A contests. but at racc's end there was somebody else on top of the podium. Mar k Wagner gra bbed just abo u t every hol..hot and proceed ed to lead a strong field of Yamah as around the track. Wagner did man age to pu ll off the first-mo to win in 250cc A racing, just bar ely edgi ng out Tri-City Yam aha 's Chad Newt on a nd Brewers Cycles' Ch ris Anstead , but his ~on d 250cc A win was not to be . Wagn er ban ged himself u p pretty bad ly in the first 125cc.A moto a nd was dea rly off the pace when the second 250cc A moto left the ga te. As far as ew'ton was concerned , it d id· n 't ma tter a nyway, bt..~auS4! he was flawless in the second moto, and he took a comfo rtable win over Anstead, as Wagne r held on to thi rd . The mixed bag of resu lts ended up pu tting Newton a t the top of the podiu m, with Wagner securing second over Anstead. Jorgensen qu ickly se ttled in to a rhythm and knocked off riders metaphorically sPeaking - and then set his sights 01\ Souza" Jorgensen wo rked Souza for several la ps a nd then powered by him wit h one of his famous swoop-and-pass moves. Once in front, Jorgen..o.;en rod e home to the \\.;nner's circle by a comforta ble m.u gin. . Equa lly impressive on the sho rt trac k was Jeff Gabha rt, who scored decisive victories in the Pro Spo rt short-trac k eve nt aboa rd his very fast PH Racing Rota x, and in the 250cc class aboa rd an ultraquick Hond a. Gabha rt basically ran wire to wire in the Pro Sport, but he h~ld to work for h is 250cc win aga inst his nemesis, Riley Cox. Cox led the race for the better part of the event until Gab ha rt slip ped und erneath in the third turn of the whit e-flag lap. TT r id e rs Ton y Rose a nd Marty Weisler brought the crowd to its feet in an abso lute dog· fight in the combined 250cc/ Open ma in event: Rose gobbled up the holL 'Shot, so Weisler had to . contend with Rose's rear fende r for several laps.
