and Hu gh es in 15th.
Before the first lap was ov er, Bei rer
had already taken over the lead , bu t it
wo u ld not be an easy position for th e
Ger ma n to hold . By lap three, Maschio,
Be lley and Co ppins were all nip ping at
his heels. Coppi ns' challenge, however ,
d id not last for lon g, as he soon dropped
off the p ace, b ut Ma schi oan d Bolley
were relentless in their pursuit of Beirer .
Lap after lap, the thr ee fron tru nners
bat tled b ack a n d forth . Maschio had
taken th e lead from Beirer on the sixth
la p bu t gave it up to Beiter on the eigh th
lap, at wh ich tim e Beire r took ov er for
good. But Beirer cou ld not rest.

concerned w ith Belley's confidence.

"That is m y sty le. 1 migh t've gotten a little close and stopp ed him from passing
m e, but that's m otocro ss. On this track,

tou gh est win ever."
Alt h o u gh Beirer w o n th e m oto, it
w as Boll e y w ho go t the overa ll a n d
mad e up som e po ints on his ri val. But
with th e ne xt round of th e ch a m pionship to be played o ut on th e N ismes
track in Bel gium, Beir er is b rimmin g
wi th confidence.
" I h ad m y g rea tes t m om ent in
mo to cross a t th a t tr ack ," Beir er sa id
(referring to his wi nning both mo tos at
the Mot ocro ss des Na tions in 1997). "I
will go th ere wi th a lot of confide nce."

"I felt very stro ng ," Everts said. "My
