Everts wa s back in 10th pl ace and Hu gh es in 15th. Before the first lap was ov er, Bei rer had already taken over the lead , bu t it wo u ld not be an easy position for th e Ger ma n to hold . By lap three, Maschio, Be lley and Co ppins were all nip ping at his heels. Coppi ns' challenge, however , d id not last for lon g, as he soon dropped off the p ace, b ut Ma schi oan d Bolley were relentless in their pursuit of Beirer . Lap after lap, the thr ee fron tru nners bat tled b ack a n d forth . Maschio had taken th e lead from Beirer on the sixth la p bu t gave it up to Beiter on the eigh th lap, at wh ich tim e Beire r took ov er for good.
