Carmichael n ow goes into the secend-to-last round at Binghampton with a 98-point lead over Sellards and will most likely w ra p up his thi rd champions hip titl e ther e. Vohland still holds thi rd with 312, w hile Wey moved past Primal Impulse Suzuki's Michael Bran des - who was injured during prac tice for fourth, wi th 276 points. It was Pro Circui t/Spli tFire / Kawasaki's Na tha n Ramsey who led the pack through the first tu rn. Pro-Am Kawasaki /O'Nea l's Mike Craig and Primal Impulse Suzuki 's Bra nden [ esserna n moved quick ly into second and third . "T ha t was easily th e best holeshot that I ever had ," Ramsey later sai d . "I felt all righ t but something smashed my p ipe and I lost a ton of power." Ca rm ich a e l was once aga in h a m pered wit h a mid pack start an d then, as he entered th e famous Millville sand wash , he threw it away in a nasty ge toff, involvin g an other rid er. Ca rmic hael re-ent ered the race and befor e he eve n exited the lon g, w hoo ped-out section, he would go down again, this tim e clipping a downed Jason McCormick. Up front, [ esserna n pa ssed Ramsey beforethe en d of the firs t lap, while Wey, Vohland, Cr aig and Excel Yam aha 's Jason Thomas held the top six after o ne lap . Sellards w a s in 13 th, wh ile Carmichael end ed the firs t lap in 38th. [esseman led until lap six, when Vohland pa ss ed fo r th e lead in th e hilly switchbac ks , Wey followed [essem an for a la p , th en mad e hi s move, d oin g the bes t to keep Vohland in his sig hts. - Roncad a was up to fo u r th after a mid pa ck s ta r t, w hile Carmichael had moved up to 19th and was still charging at the halfway point A short time later, Wey passed Vohland for the lead whe n Vohland tip ped over in a comer after the rockers. The Kawa saki-mounted Wey w ould soon settle into a comfortable pace as Voh land chased. Ro ncada moved by jesseman for third with several laps remaining, and Sellards moved by Ram sey and Craig for fifth. With the whi te flag waving, Wey was holding the point and g e t tin g so me strong support from the fans . He wo uld cross th e li ne a lap la ter for his first National m ot o win ever. Vohland crossed several seconds back in second, w hile Roncada finished third. jesseman enjoyed his best moto finish ever, while Sellards and Craig followed in pursuit Carmichael gave it his bes t th e en tire moto and was credited with 10th. "I got out of the gate really well and was up there with Tallon early," Wey said. "I star ted my cha rge on him with abo ut four laps left and as soo n as I did , he tipped over. I have a lot left for the second rnoto, and it' s not over yet" "I really thought that I had that race in con trol, bu t I think I just mad e a lit tle mistake due to a judgment error," Vohland said. "I p a ss e d a lot of riders in that whoop sec tion," sa id a drai ned Roncada , who hammered to finish third . "That was the best start I' ve had all ye ar, a nd it felt pretty cool to lead ," jess eman said. "I made a few mistakes and dropped back, but fourth is okay. " Ram sey and Cu rrie rounded the first turn si de by side in the second moto. Sellards had a better star t, as did Vohland and Casey Johnson. A hu ge pileup came next and man y rid er s we re collected in the mess. As the rid ers came out of the sa nd wash for the first time , it was Sella rd s w ho was leading, followed by Yamaha-mounted p rivateer Keith John so n, Yama ha of Troy's Emesto Fonseca and tea mma te Case y Lytle. Roncada, Wey, Carmichael and Vohland were ninth , LOth, 13th a nd 34th, respectiv ely, at the end of the first lap. Fonseca made an aggressive pa ss on the Bobby ]'s /No Fear/Spy-sponsored Johnson a t the beginning of the second lap a nd put Johns on on th e ground, movin g himself into second. Sella rds pulled away ea rly, ga ining several seco nds on Fonseca. He and his teammates johnson, Lytle an d Ron cada mad e it a YoT fr eight tr ain in second th rou gh fifth for several laps. Carmichael was u p to sixth on th e thi rd circuit and a lap later passed three rid ers to move in to third. Sellards now h a d a seven -second lead on johnson, while Carmichael was th ird and closing in on [ohnso n, At the IS-minute mark of the 3O-minute rno to, Carmichael made his move by Johnson through the long whoops and was now gunning for race leader Sellards. Carmichael followed and closed for a lap and then made a beautifu l, crowdpleasi ng pass on Sellards. Co ming down a roug h straight into a tigh t left-hander, Sellards held the inside but drifted out to the berm . Ca rmicha el se t upon the outsid e and dived in behind Sellards on the inside and took away his line, taking over the lead. The p as s s urprised Se lla rds a nd Jo hnson, w ho wa s ba ck in th ird and now getting a burst of energy. joh nso n closed in on Sellard s two laps later, and Wey was up to sixth but was not having as much success moving through th e pack as Ca rmichael. 'C a r m ic h a e l began to pu ll away thro ug ho u t the next few laps, as johnso n ho u nded an d then passed Sellards for second . Ron cada was now in fou rth after passing tw o of hi s tea mma tes, and Wey was in sixth, p ressu ring and need in g to pass Lytl e to ca p tu re th e overa ll. Carmic hael proved once again tha t w he n he is o n , h e is unt ou ch a bl e, stre tching ou t his lead each lap until the checkers waved . johnson crossed for an impressive seco nd, followed by a so mewhat disap pointed Sellards. A consis te n t Ron cad a crossed in fourth, ea rn ing second overa ll, a n d Wey's fifth was good enoug h to cap tu re the da y's number-on e position.
