The 701cc-u p Unlimited classes were the richest and most spectacular wit h 12 riders blasti ng over the .hill, though they u sed th e older a nd less severe chute ra ther th a n th e giant cliff th e smaller Unlimited class faced . Roy, Utah's Cra ig Sp en cer nabbed the $50 for bein g the first rider over the hill, but afte r that he saw 12 other rid ers go over fas ter an d b u m p h im b ack to 13th . As it ha s so ma ny tim es in th e pa st , th e class came down to a Whitlock /Kimball /Beer con test. Winner Whi tlock set fast time of the day at 12.875, and that padded his $1750 haul for the class by $100. His first run produ ced a magnificent en do . Wh ile running hard chasing a fast time, he hit the ver tical chute harder th an a 400pound, l20-horsepower ma chine ca n han d le. He actually eased off the throttle for the winning ru n. Mel Kimba ll's seco n d pl a ce run .004 seco n ds slower looked like a winner. He ma de the run early, and the rul es say that he need no t run again as long as his lead holds. He had already conve rted his CBR back to a rea r tire a nd sho rter 'w heelbase for th e a dva nced class when th e a n nou ncer sounded Whitlock's fas ter time. Kimball's exclamations could be hea rd from the pits without an announcer. Beer' s Kawasaki was in the same neighborhood with a 12.926 for thir d place and $1000 th e las t fou r-digit pa y-ou t in the class that paid $7550 to the top 15 riders. Jon Smi th sn agged fourth place with Ron Zu ndel the only other rider in the 13-second zone.
