Schnabel held third as 18 Russell desperately tried to ga in that last transfer. As the lead ers took the white flag, Russell tried to go around the ou tside of Schnabel in turn thr ee, but Russe ll's ga mble faile d to pay off, a nd he crashed. McCoy held tough for seve ra l laps, but finally , had to defen d his seco nd-place position from the adva nces of Springsteen. Mike Varnes topped a race- long battl e 'with Dan Stanley for fou rth. GRAND NATIONAL As lightning flash ed in the d istance, the 25-lap Nationa l go t und er way wit h Roeder and King hi ttin g tu rn one first. But it was Kevi n Varn es w ho led the fray at the com p letion of the 'first lap. Ro ed er the n b la sted to th e fro n t as Varnes locked on to his rear wheel. King and Carr, mean whil e, were dueling over third when the lead ers tan gled - givi ng King the window of opportu nity he was looking for. "I had to s h u t off and g e t o n th e bra kes hard ," Varn es s aid of his near ' enco u nte r with the wall. "I shou ld have been ahead of him, I guess." Kin g ro ared o ff w ith Roed er s till holding down second . After a few laps Carr and Varnes regrou ped and closed on Roed er. "I got goi n g a little too late," Carr said. "I found where I needed to be and ' started charging; I was just a little late to catch Rich. That's the wa y it goes. We did what we needed to do - we beat the guy we needed to beat and got a few gu ys in between us." Ro ed er m a d e a la st-ditch s ta n d against both Carr and Varn es. "I tan gl ed up with Varnes and tha t kind of blew my conce ntration there for a couple of laps," Roed er sai d later . "I got in to him coming off tw o. 1 kn ow it screwed him up and it scr ewed me up too." With three lap s to go, Carr took secon d, bu t Roeder was n ' t a b o u t t o g o down q u ie tly. "The last lap 1 came int o tu rn three , kind of beh ind him," Carr explained. "I s tarted to roll to th e o u tsi de. I h ad noticed late in the race, that he had been lighting it up pr etty hard off the bott om groove. 1 knew that he wo u ld try to protect the bottom a nd 1 was h oping h e wo u ld. light it up aga in: He spun wors e than he had all nigh t, so I wa s able to go around him ." "I sho uld have beat Chris, but 1got all sideways coming off four," Roeder said . "I got on the gas too hard . I got too excited again. I'll get it together one of these days, We were go ing goo d all da y, we knew right from the time we un loaded it was fast. We knew we had a shot." Watching for the mistak e tha t never came , Varnes was stuck in fourt h. "I was trying to p lay ca tch- up a nd Carr and I were p retty much runn in g the sa me line, so it was hard to gai n on him ," Varnes said. "I ca ugh t back u p with Roeder, but he and Ca rr we re runnin g side by side an d I d id n' t have an ywhere to go ." Davis d rop ped a ll th e way to 11th af ter his s tro ng start, a nd Hacker had wo rked h is w a y as hi g h as se ve n th before dropping to 12th. Springs teen actually worked his way up to 13 th fr om a 16th -pl a ce s ta r t. McCoy , Beattie, Sch n abe l a nd Jo nes rou nded ou t the finis hers. Mik e Hacker and Michelle DiSalvo had their Harl eys leading the first heat until Team Powell /Hall's Motorsports' J.R. Schnabel brought his Suzuki to the fron t. Schnabel took the lead temporarily as Hacker fl ex ed s o me new found muscl e o n hi s 1-800-FASTHOG / Mo roney ' s Harl ey-Davidson-backed Harley . Hacker retook the lead on ly to lose it once again at the finish line. DiSalvo dropped third to Bob Buffington until the last lap when she slipped her Mod esto Harley-Davidson /Super Tr app-sponsored Harley back around Buffingt on 's Su zuki. The seco nd heat was led off the line by Brian Krom roy with Rob Millerand Steve Morehead righ t behind. The first lap sa w Morehead lead in g a tight form ati on of Rob M ille r, Kro rnroy , Jo e Kopp, Roy Miller and Scott Deu bler. Morehead and Miller were joined in their battl e by the Dick's Suz u ki / Dave Burks Mot orsports' Suzuki of Ko p p. Kopp took over the lead at the halfway po int a nd p u t so me d is tan ce between himself and the battle for second . After a racelon g battle, Miller had his Howell's Harl ey-Davidson / Fin ish Line T ech / Sa d d le m e n -b a cke d Ha rley in fr o nt of Moreh ead ' s KK Motorcv cle Supp ly / F&S Harl ey-Davidson-backed Suzu ki at the end . As the last hea t was coas ting into the pi ts, a light spri nkle began to fall. Soon it turned to rain, a nd th e ma in even t was not to be.
